Anderson Hernandez hit his first MLB home run, Glavine performed wonderfully (8 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 3 K), and Wagner struck out the side in the ninth to close out the 3-2 victory. Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted September 20, 2006 As a Yankees fan, try to remember how over the top the 1996 Yankees and their fans were in their celebrations every step of the way considering they'd won jack and shit in the previous 15 seasons. Just to put it in terms everyone can understand, a kid who was born the last time the Mets won the division is either a HS senior or a freshman in college now. It's not like they did this shit a year after winning the WS. To be fair, the Yankees are making their 12th straight postseason while the Mets are making their 7th post season trip in their organizations history. I get that, but it's not like it's the end of some huge drought. They were in the NLCS in 99 and the World Series in 2000! The Yankees went 14 years before their playoff appearance in 1995. The Mets went 13 between their appearances in 73 and 86 and 11 between 88 and 99. Those are droughts. I understand going crazy after that long. And I don't have any problem with the players celebrating it, they have a lot of pressure on them in NY and deserve to cut loose after basically wrapping up their regular season. But the Mets franchise was there six years ago, and these people calling up WFAN were talking like this was some unbelieveable, magical life changing moment. They sounded about as goofy as Red Sox fans did after finally winning a world series, and I just thought that was completely insane. Save the 'THIS IS THE HAPPIEST I'VE EVER BEEN AS A SPORTS FAN AND NOTHING CAN COMPARE AND I'M SO GLAD I GOT TO SHARE IT WITH MY KIDS/MOTHER/BROTHER/FRIENDS' shit till you actually WIN A WORLD SERIES. Dude, I completely understand why people are happy, more power to them, and more power to the Mets. I'm happy for them, got absolutely nothing against the Mets, I love Omar, love Pedro, love Beltran, love Wright and Reyes, they've got a real likable team. What I'm saying is take a step back and realize you've got a long way to go before you've actually accomplished anything. My main issue stems from the blithering idiots calling into WFAN. I don't know if you listened to WFAN last night, but if you did you'd get where I'm coming from. A whole bunch of people counting their chickens before they hatch, basically talking like this is the greatest Mets season ever, talking about how they'll "always remember this moment" and "tell their grandkids about this moment" when all they did was clinch a division they've been leading by 10 games for months. Hey, what if you lose in the first round, will you still think this was so special?!? I mean, I could understand if they clinched in a tight race and people got all emotional about it.....I don't understand the level of emotion Mets fans were showing when they've been leading their division all year and have basically never been in any sort of jeopardy of going into the playoffs as favorites, plus they're only 6 years removed from a world series appearance, so I can't even buy the "this is the first time the Mets have been good in my lifetime" argument. But shit, maybe that is the Yankee fan in me speaking. We've made the playoffs the last five years, the only team that's made the world series twice in the last 5 years, yet we've got absolutely nothing to show for it other than a bunch of people saying, "hey, you guys have the highest payroll every year and always make the playoffs." That will turn to pure hatred if they go down in the first round. Then the Mets fans will call in and call them the biggest chokers in the history of baseball. Because it's all about team loyalty. Well the Mets did act like they won the World Series when in reality they won the NL East. I dont know why they were so excited to win the East when they have been in first place with a 10 game lead all summer. It's not like they were the 1995 Mariners who made a 12 comeback to win their division in the final month. When the 1995 Yankees won the Wild Card it was nothing more than high fives and hugs. Mattingly did a fist pump and hit the ground when they won the wild card. This was a person who had spent his whole entire career to that point never making it to the playoffs. Last nite, he was a single away from the cycle. If we woulda just went with Scott at the beginning of the season instead of screwing around with Preston, we'd probably be in a much better position than we are now. An outfield in 2007 of Luke Scott in left, Willy Taveras in Center, and Carlos Lee in right seems like it'll be pretty sweet. Add Woody Williams to the mix and the Astros will be unstoppable! It'll be touching next year...and in 2008...and in 2009...by 2010 it'll start getting old. And Matt Stairs has been with the Tigers for five games, played in four and has a whopping 12 official at-bats. Stop reaching for straws; the Tigers were faltering long before last Friday.
