A sign saying "Cena fears Workrate" was confiscated from a fan at Unforgiven by security.

Has this ever happened before? I know Vince loves Cena, But why is he being protected to the point where a sign is confiscated so that it is not shown on TV...To make matters worse..There wasnt a word of Profanity on the sign...They dont take the "Vince Love Penis" signs..... It pisses me off when you listen to JR and the other commentators talk about the WWE fans cheer who they want...When they say this, this is slang for the "assholes arent doing what we want them to do"....All this tells me is that Vince is gonna turn Cena heel when he thinks Cena should turn heel..Back in 97 when the Rock was getting pushed as the Blue Chipper; Rocky Maivia the fans grew tired of that shit and started to boo the Hell outta the Rock he wasnt protected, they turned him heel..a few months later it was the best thing they did...I dont know I think it's just dumb...What do you guys think?

Yet HHH can openly say on air that Cena's not a good wrestler in a shooty tone?

Cena's a better wrestler than most give him credit for, but I don't see why he gets this protection. It certainly won't make more fans cheer him, if that's what Vince is looking for. Did "Die Rocky Die" signs ever get taken away?

Posted

Those were two different circumstances. Back then Vince had all those options, so if the Rock didn't pan out, they had other people to step in. Here, Vince is putting ALL his eggs in Cena's basket. And really, who else could step up to the plate? Cena is still their top draw (if there was one in WWE) and merch seller.

It's WWE's show. They can take whatever signs they want.

Taken away? They used it as a tatic.. I remember back in 98 I think They showed one of those little videos on how a wrestler got to the point there at and It was about the Rock talkin about how the fans turned on him and one of the things they showed was the Die Rocky Die signs...I Agree with you on Cena, his moves dont bother me as much as his gimmick/personality..all i want is a heel turn..Damn have a clean loss and I'll crack a smile...

Remember this was during the peak of the Monday Night Wars...WCW hadnt reach the bottom...The Rock was lightning in a bottle..who was gonna make an impact like the Rock did, Gangrel?..Remember how RAW was back in 98-99?...As long as you got the Rock and stone cold on the mic for 30 minutes it was worth watching...There's no way in Hell Cena could pull that off....

It's hard to believe that back then RAW was the thing to watch...RAW was good EVERY week...People that didnt even like wrestling used to watch...I remember back in 96-97 somebody either had a Austin 3:16 shirt or an nWo Shirt...I cant believe I used to record RAW back then and watch it over and over until the next Monday... im glad I grew outta that..

Seriously, with all the good/great matches that Cena has been having lately, there is no reason for this outright hatred of his ring work. These so called "smart" fans are still living in the days of 2004 where there wasn't a single good Cena match.

Posted

Cena's best matches are heavily gimmicked which covers his weaknesses. When it comes to regular matches, Cena is good enough that he can be carried to something good but can only work as well as the guy he's facing. He's had good to great matches because of combination of those factors. The problems come when Cena is put against an inferior worker, because he can't carry people.

WWE also has the right to lie to their fans all they want.

Back when the Monday night wars were going on, I believe WWE would force fans who had WCW type shirts on who would be on camera to turn it inside out, or put on a WWE shirt istead. I heard about and saw that a lot back then. I'm not sure if WCW did the same or not.

Just because they can doesn't make it ethical or right. Or a smart business move. But, then again, I guess that would be par for the course in WWE.

Yes, because blatantly lying to your consumers has historically turned out to be a great tactic.

No one ever said it was or wasn't.

I hope they keep pushing Cena as a face, and maybe something new will happen with the fans.

What do you mean by something new?

I can't say as I blame WWE. As a company, it is far more in their favour to get rid of a couple of negative signs that can make national air rather then keep maybe 10 fans happy at the risk of damaging their product. It's win/win from their perspective.

How does that sign damage the company? For the remaining viewers who understand workrate, the sign isn't necessary (and if it gets on tv it would only get a chuckle from those who get it) and for those who appreciate cartoonish characters on their wrestling programs (several in this thread apparently) they won't understand/care abot the poster anyway.

If it means so much to the wwe to protect Cena from this sign...why do they continue to push him as a face? Can anyone give a real answer to this? And I don't count Leena's 'they can do whatever they wanna' responses as actual answers.

WWE has the right to show what they want on their program. They don't want signs that could lessen the popularity of their stars, or whatever reason. It's hardly a horrible thing.

I'd say it has for WWE. As they say they "listen to their fans", and obviously don't. Yet, still is making money, I assume.

I'm curious to see how far they can take this with the fans that do hate him this much, and see how they keep reacting. That alone makes the company more interesting than in years.

If you're uninteresting enough for long enough, I guess anything can be construed as interesting.

On the sign topic, I ask just one question:

If the overness of John Cena is jeopardized by one guy holding a sign implying that he "fears workrate", how good a job can creative possibly be doing?

One fan holding a sign can grow into hundreds over weeks. Why risk things.

Exactly, it's not like people haven't heard of the snowball effect before.

In the grand scheme of things though, why would a company pushing a particular brand (or in this case star) want to lessen the impact of their creative team by allowing unforseen signage onto their programming? It's not about "it's just one sign." It's about ensuring the maximum effect for the work you've done to condition the fans.

I think we're all just overreacting. It's just one sign. Get over it.

No, it's not.

If you read the fan reports after Unforgiven, you would've read that all, if not most, anti-Cena signs were confiscated BEFORE the event. The "Cena fears workrate" sign was one of the very few that made it through.
