Prime Time Andrew Doyle 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2006 This may seem like a dumb question, but why do you guys have separate polls for who controls the parliament and who is the president. Down here, we don't actually vote for who we want to be PM, we vote for the candidates in our electorates and whoever has the majority of seats in the House of Reps is the Government. Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2006 Definitely glad to see the Democrats take control of the House, and quite possibly the Sentate. Now it's time to hold Bush accountable and punish him for his missteps.

Down here, we don't actually vote for who we want to be PM, we vote for the candidates in our electorates and whoever has the majority of seats in the House of Reps is the Government. In the United States, it's basically a three branch system: - The Judicial (the US Supreme Court) - The Legislative (the House of Representatives and the US Senate) - The Executive (the President of the United States) It's basically designed so that each branch is separated, and they serve as a check and balance to each other. The US President typically has more power than a Prime Minister in countries with a British or European style of government.
Prime Time Andrew Doyle 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2006 We run the same basic Westminster system with checks & balances and all that jazz. But why do you do the voting for control of parliament and vote for the person running the country 2 years apart?
bobobrazil1984 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2006 regarding the South Dakota abortion ban that got defeated, they screwed themselves by not putting in provisions for rape and incest. They thought that a full ban with no exceptions was a better challenge to roe v wade. I saw some numbers somewhere that said a lot of the people who voted against it, woulda voted for it had they put in those provisions. The lack of provisions had become very publicly known in the campaign.
EricMM 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2006 Mike is such a trip! Hey, I'm not complaining that the Dems stole MO. The GOP didn't do much to warrant an election. The only reason I voted at all was to make sure Sanford won to save my country from the sheer idiocy of my state's party. Dems just don't like the reality of the fraud they commit mentioned. Should I also mention how many dead people are registered to vote in NY? Should I also mention what percentage of dead voters tend to vote Democratic? We gained conservative Democrats --- which is always a plus. We lost Lincoln Chaffee, which is hardly a loss. The only downside is we lost Santorum, who is very needed, and the insanely qualified and significantly better candidate Steele lost to Cardin due to the latent racism of progressives who loathe blacks --- I mean, if conservatives who vote against blacks are "racist" (as Imus all but said they were in the Corker/Ford race, it only fits in this regard as well). bobobrazil1984 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2006 It'll be interesting to see how much of Nancy Pelosi's "100 hours" legislation proposal she introduces when the House comes into session. as i recal there were a few things, but the ones that interest me are the claims to allowing gov't to negotiate lower prices directly with pharmaceuticals, and raising the minimum wage to 7.25. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2006 Lieberman is a Dem, but ran and an independent because he lost as we all know. So him being counted is ok. The other independent is a true one, but since he votes with the "left" most "left news networks" will rope him into that. One of the Congressional reps in Texas is really a libertarian, he "sided" with the right because he says "its a two party system", but he shouldn't be counted with the "right". I get a kick out of the fact that the Socialist guy from Vermont sides with the Democrats...

Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2006 Did more black people vote in this one? I was watching BET and they showed a very white man who supposedly worked with analyzing voters talking about how the buzz in "barbershops across America" would be the amount of black people turning out for this one. I wish I was making that up.
MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2006 So, Americans. In laymans terms is your country in better shape or worse shape now? This whole thing of the Democrats winning the House wont mean squat if the Republicans manage to squeak out control of the Senate. If that happens, for the next 2 years, next to nothing is going to get done due to damned partisan politics. And personally for me as a Marylander..Maryland as a state is going to go to hell quickly with Omalley as governor..but thats a different issue.

I was watching BET and they showed a very white man who supposedly worked with analyzing voters talking about how the buzz in "barbershops across America" would be the amount of black people turning out for this one. I wish I was making that up. Hell, it's funnier if you weren't. I think it's a good thing, overall. But, opinions may vary. I also found it kinda funny (and damn near inevitable) that the Republicans were now going to be the ones whining about how the Dems stole the election. Pot, kettle, black. Guest Felonies! Report post Posted November 8, 2006 That's not a doll, it's their unborn child that they're still carrying around. In it, she writes that the couple brought the deceased infant home from the hospital and introduced the dead child to their living children as "your brother Gabriel" and slept with the body overnight before returning him to the hospital. bobobrazil1984 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2006 Rumsfeld gone? If Bush kicked him out that'll be the first move in a long time i'd approve of. I've said for a while, a lot of practical failures in execution in military matters (like, say, not having enough troops in certain areas even as generals were telling you they needed more) fall directly on Donnie. One question is though, if Bush had done this a week ago, would it have helped save them?

Dr. Tyler; Captain America 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2006 What a lovely, lovely, sunshiny day! We knew when the early results were coming back, especially down in Greene Couny where I am, that we were in good shape. Our "competitive" number was 39%, our "win" number was 41%. We got 43%. Which is freaking nuts. I have to say, if any of you have a chance to do it, you should work on a campaign. If you end up winning it in the end, it's like, the most rewarding experience on the planet. Of course, you also get to drink excessively.
