OMG CROSSTOWN DEAL~

Cubs get: Neal Cotts

White Sox get: David Aardsma and Carls Vasquez

Not sure how to view this. On the one hand, the Cubs get a good lefty, even though they're already paying millions to Scott Eyre for that. On the other, Aardsma was excellent a lot of the time last year and had the makings of a closer. But then again, don't all young Cubs relievers? Except Cliff Bartosh.

In the least surprising news item of the day, Johan wins his second Cy Young with a unanimous vote. The voters got one right for once, although I still haven't figured out how he lost last year.

Also, A-Rod is saying that he won't exercise his out-clause that would void the last three years of his deal. I thought this would be a no-brainer for him. Get out of New York and make a little more sratch. Oh well, have fun getting booed for the next three years.

The Giants are looking to sign Pierre and Carlos Lee. Is there going to be any room for Bonds? haha.

So they're transitioning from overpaid 40-year-olds to overpaid 30-year-olds. The San Francisco Giants are the motherfucking worst. I hope they never have a winning season again.

I hear ESPN radio is reporting that the Braves and Padres are "close" to a trade that would send Jake F'n Peavy to Atlanta in exchange for Marcus Giles, Horacio Ramirez and Jarrod Stalalalkadlkaslkjmacchia.

Also I hear ESPN radio is reporting that Matsuzaka is close to a deal for 3 yr/45 million. Jeepers!

For some reason when they announced the Barfield trade, I told my wife, "Watch them trade Peavy or Greene to Atlanta for Giles..." Damn them for possibly proving me right.

I thought the whole reason that they were pushing so hard for Marcus Giles was, in part, because of Brian Giles, but I also heard recently that they're thinking about moving him.

In any event, nobody should EVER trade Jake Peavy...Hell, sign Todd Walker and stick him at second, but why on Earth would they trade Peavy? Marcus Giles is a decent 2nd baseman, coming off of an off year, but...for Jake Peavy? Seriously...

Unless Minnesota has a brain fart and is willing to part with Johan Santana, I can't agree with you more.

Alrite, looks like ESPN radio is denying the truth in the forementioned Peavy/other guys deal. I read it on the Braves board, but now there's a link denying the validity of it. I still wouldn't rule out Kevin Towers making that deal, though...

I've heard both of those rumors debunked elsewhere, but with as crazy as this offseason is shaping up, you never really know.

Read in a Philadelphia paper that Boston signed JD Drew to a four year, $48 million contract, but haven't found confirmation anywhere else. He's going to get a lot more money than that, I would think.

Not that it really matters, but I don't know how Wang finished ahead of Halladay in the Cy Young voting. Well, I do know, it was the wins, but still.

riccardi should be fired. his team had more than enough fire power, they needed to concentrate on their pitching. maybe this means that vernon wells will be traded for pitching, but thats still an awful trade off for them. i understood when the a's gave thomas an incentive-laden contract, but to flatout pay gaurenteed money for thomas when they have so many other concerns is beyond preposturous.

The Blue Jays were 7th in runs scored but 5th in runs allowed. Plus, they have a opening for a designated hitter, with Shea Hillenbrand gone.

those stats are actually quite interesting after watching more than enough games, and reading the stats of games i didn't see. it seemed as though pitching was their achilles heel.

The Os signed some nobody LHP from Detroit that Ive never heard of 3 years 12 million.

whoo!

was shocked. he's a decent situational lefty who any team would love. but, boy, did he come at a steep price. detroit wanted to keep him badly but not at that price.

I read somewhere that someone (maybe Baltimore) offered Justin Speier a 4-year/$16 million deal.

Damnit! I really wanted him to close in Boston. I know that this is a crazy free agent market and we should expect anything, but multi-year deals for middle relief seems crazy to me. Peter Gammons mentioned that Boston might look into a six-man rotation next year so that they can work their starters a little harder when they do pitch. Might be an interesting way to circumvent the rising cost of mediocre relief pitching.

Well that's how they vote, how do you think Bartalo Colon and Chris Carpenter won Cy Young Awards last year?

Exactly. It's also how Clemens won his seventh two years ago (in addition to how he was jobbed out of his eighth by Carpenter last year).

Hey now...if the voters only looked at wins, Roy O woulda won in 2004. Only 20 game winner in the NL. Quibbling between Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens winning the Cy Young is like uh...something.

Is the lefty that Marvin's referencing Jaime Walker? I heard he got signed. The 'Stros were looking at him to compliment Trever Miller (who did an OUTSTANDING job last year).

Yeah, but....Jake Peavy...JAKE PEAVY. It would be shitty if they traded him today anyway, he's gone for the week with Roy Oswalt hunting in Illinois. They're BFF.

Oh, I got caught up in the Fake Peavy rumor, and I forget to mention that according to the Houston Chronicle, the 'Stros have offered multi-year deals to both Carlos Lee and Alfonze Soriano...and they're talking to Woody Williams. Seems kinda early for the two top name hitter FAs to sign...and it's not likely that they'll both sign with Houston, but...if they do...boy howdy!

It would only be appropriate that Jay Gibbons go back to Toronto though. The hitch on the deal is Wells is a FA after next season and I doubt they'll be able to resign him. I really dont care about Gibbons, he can go..but Benson..they really should try and keep him despite his wishes not to want to stay..

The Astros and Rockies are reportedly working on a deal that would send Brad Lidge and Chris Burke to Colorado for SP Jason Jennings. Given that they already have Brian Fuentes on staff, some are speculating that they are attempting to acquire Lidge to flip him to the Red Sox for some package revolving around Coco Crisp (who they've inexplicably have a hard-on for).
