Was there actually a report in the Boston Herald that suggested the Sawx might try to get Clemens to come be their closer? I find that ridiculous! Guffaw!

You never know. The Magglio Ordonez and Ivan Rodriguez contracts looked stupid a year or two ago, but the Tigers are laughing their way to the bank right now.

well, its not that i think signing thomas is a bad move, i just think their attention should have been focused more on pitching. they already were in the top 5 for batting average, slugging, hr & stuff. which isn't the end all be all, but it demonstrates that they weren't exactly starving offensively. pitching, on the other hand, was laughable. you'd see them try to fill the 4th & sth spots on the rotation with green rookies, who are somewhat touted, but had a lot of trouble getting it together. when they pitched every third game it was almost a gaurenteed loss. like i haven't heard the jays being involved in acquiring any starting pitching, which i find unsettling. plus, its unfortunate that j.p. is trying to compete with the sox & yanks in an arms race instead of drafting well & bringing in quality rookies. they have aan anemic farm system. ultimately when he gets fired next off-season, we'll look back & say he really didn't do anything to help this team. i want to be wrong. i've always had a soft spot for my home country bluejays, i just remain a tad befuddled by their g.m.'s approach. the thomas signing in itself isn't bad. its less than what the tigers paid to get sheffield. its significantly less than what the sox are gonna pay drew. and if he bashes out even 30 extra homeruns with a decent b.a. & obp it is a success.

Not that I feel like taking issue with the rest of your post at the moment, but I'm curious as to why you'd say this about the Red Sox. Dan Patrick and KO were saying the same thing on the radio earlier this week. If anything, this team has been steadfast in its approach to building a ballclub no matter what hiccups happen along the way. Why would you think that they don't know what they are doing?

It's true. Canadian Chris brought up some of these points already, but they deserve to be repeated.

- They want to build their farm system, but they trade good prospects like Hanley Ramirez, Cla Meredith, Andy Marte, etc.

- They want to keep a good chemistry and get guys who can handle the pressure of playing in Boston, yet they let guys that can (Damon) go while signing guys that can't/probably won't to big money(Rentaria, Clement, J.D. Drew)

- They want to reign in their spending a bit and say that they can't compete financially with the Yankees....then they go and VASTLY outbid every other team for just the chance to TALK to a Japanese pitcher that's never faced this kind of pressure (he's going to be expected to win 18-20 games this year by a lot of fans if it ends up taking $100M+ to get him for just three years).

This organization is taking a "throw shit against the wall and see what sticks" approach. They get away with it because they've got the money. Bill Simmons is right; they are just like the Yankees now.

According to Gammons, Alex Gonzalez is siging 3 yr/14 million with the Reds. And Moises Alou is bringing his urine-soaked hands to the Mets for a 2-yr deal, which makes the dread(lock)ed Lastins Millege expendable.

As if you need more athletic young men to fawn over.

Raise your hand if Alou to the Mets is at all surprising.

To the Marlins for Ricky Nolasco or Scott Olsen!

Make it happen!

You want Lastings that bad? I wonder what Melky could bring in for the Yankees.

You sure you want him? Did you see him last year? Of course, he'll probably reach his full potential with the Marlins. What young player doesn't?

Yeah plus he's of the age where he should realistically be no higher than double A. Everyone pronouncing him a bust are so far ahead of the game it's scary. He's so young yet.

DUMB. FUCKING. SIGNING. It's like Hendry knows he's gone, so he's just dropping his pants and taking a shit on the carpet that you'll never be able to scrub out without ripping the carpet out completely.

135 MILLION?!?!

8 years?!?!

The Cubs just proved without a shadow of a doubt that a sucker is born every minute and that sucker is Hendry. I like Soriano and all but that deal is beyond crazy.

This is the dumbest front office in baseball. How was Hendry not purged with Baker and MacFail?

Jesus Christ! Mike and the Mad Dog were right early this week when they heart that Soriano would get over 120 million. People might hate the Yankees for having an absurt Payroll but they never gave out absurd single player deals. I hate when teams overspend and they were only bidding against themselves.

I'm positively elated that the Cubs signed Soriano. If nothing else, it ends the Phils' inane flirtation with him, and frees them to persue other options. There's a chance Soriano is the next Andre Dawson. He'll probably age well. The problem is whether 2006 was an out of context year, and I suspect it was. Even if it wasn't, it's not that hard to get corner outfield production. I hope the Cubs at least expect to make Soriano a center fielder for that money.

And I have no problems with the Justin Speier contract. He was one of the top five relievers on the market.

Derek Jeter getting 10 yrs/$189 million is not absurd or anything.

Yeah, but four years? I'll have to wait to see what the dollar figures are, but you have to wonder whether he'll be worth whatever he was signed for by the end of the deal.

poor poor cubs.

there's two viewpoints

1. people who hate this deal ---> cubs fans

2. people who love this deal ---> people glad their team didn't sign him for that price

Not when you're looking at a Hall of Fame talent.
