Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2008 That's what I don't understand...if Bush was going to run a corrupt and stupid war, couldn't we at least, to put it bluntly, steal some of their oil and get gas prices down around here? That would certainly help the economy, even a little bit.

Well that and hoping for short term cheap gas(which is all it would ever be anyway) is requesting a band-aid for a gun shot wound.

snuffbox 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2008 I don't think that other countries' failures is what we should be aiming for.
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2008 Failures? Do you realize that Americans screaming about the price of gas is a joke in other countries? I'm not saying gas should be the most expensive of all nations, I'm saying it could reach something of a moderate. The failure has, more than anything, been on our part. Yes, gas costs a lot more in Britain and Spain and France and Japan and You Name It. But these countries also developed a lot better, with more urban planning, long-range mass transit (the chunnel for gods' sakes), and more people living closer together in cities. Whereas here, sprawl was invented, public transit is often something considered as a last resort for the poor who can't afford a personal vehicle (except in New York and Chicago), and rather than rural life and city dwellers we've created this bizarre hybrid of suburb dwellers who live on the outskirt communities of a major city and drive a long distance to and from the core. Guest Tzar Lysergic Report post Posted March 19, 2008 England? Japan? This country is huge. snuffbox 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2008 Eric, we don't all live live in cities where we can walk to work/etc. 5 year anniversary today. Our president says that the war has been harder than expected. This is to be expected when those that refused to fight in Vietnam are allowed to lead the most ridiculous military effort in the history of man.
Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2008 Eric, we don't all live live in cities where we can walk to work/etc. He knows this, but repeats the same idealistic ecological drivel all the time. It's people like him that make me hate bicyclists. Seriously, they tend to be some of the most self-absorbed people I've encountered. "Oh, I'm helping the earth, and I'm getting healthy doing it!" Yay, that's fine. I need my car, though. I run my own small business, with multiple locations, so I have to drive a good deal. Yes, that is my choice, but there are millions of Americans with similar work situations that the rising gas prices are really putting a hurt on. Besides that, I too, live in a small town with no mass transit options. The government made it that way, so they should be the ones to help the people who elected them and fix the damn issue. snuffbox 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2008 I do my best to drive as little as possible. I walk as much as I can, sometimes to a comical extent to others. I carpool. I take buses when possible. But it's just not feasible to expect that of everybody (and I still have to use cars plenty of times myself) can just bike or walk everywhere they need to go. Something needs to be done about gas prices UNTIL we actually do something about new sources of energy. Doing nothing, pretending it's not a problem because other countries' gas is even more expensive, or using pie-in-the-sky rhetoric wont do jackshit for the problem. We should have been working on this for decades now, and ignoring it for another decade wont help anything.

NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2008 Urban Sprawl wasn't planned/executed overnight. It was probably carefully calculated in order to make us more dependent on cars and gas/oil. It's not going to be fixed overnight or within one presidency either, however it is really the attitude about the situation that needs to change. I understand why people want cheaper gas, because it is a much needed part of most people's daily life. However people never stop to think why it is that way and what part they may have played directly or indirectly into making their life the way it is. I also don't understand the notion that people feel entitled to "cheap gas".....why? because we use it a lot? I am stretched by expensive gas prices as much as the next guy, but to make these silly demands that our government "needs to do something about it" is ridiculous. You don't like gas prices? Start voting in people that agree with you and want alternative fuel sources put into place and not people who think they "still need to be researched"

Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2008 England? Japan? This country is huge. I want cheap gas, so I can drive across the motherfucker That's called taking an airplane. I realize the cost of air keeps going up, but if people took air every time it would work for them instead of cross country drives, gas would be cheaper for the airline companies AND they'd be more able to easily afford it. The other alternative is investing in maglev/bullet train technology. Of course, since Amtrak can't get the Sunset Limited through the bible belt states to Florida, since the track out of New Orleans STILL hasn't been repaired since Katrina, good luck getting money spent to replace slow trains with fast trains. A real car, not an aerodynamic badass golf cart that costs sixty grand. I am with you here. My point is that once upon a time in this country, people lived in cities close together tied by a transit network with a lot of conveniences, or they lived in rural areas where they had less regional amenities but a lot more space. Suburban sprawl has tried to give people the best of both worlds, and it has done so at the cost of consumption and emissions.
Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2008 Heck, I have to point out that even in the relatively rural area that I live in, they used to have train service between cities. People decided they liked driving a car better.

The point is, I don't want to ride a train or plane and wait in lines and shit. Can't take a lighter? Eat a dick, Continental. I've been on a plane once in my adult life, and I seriously found a tooth extraction more pleasant. I remember the bus. Mass transit is hell on earth. It should be banned. Make gas cost a buck a gallon again and the bus won't be necessary.
EricMM 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2008 You must be out of your ever-loving mind if you think flying uses less gas than driving. Maybe if you get a superheavy jet full to capacity... Trains, though, DO use less gass, far less gas. If they received 1/2 the attention that we put towards our cars, they'd be better, I'm sure. The point is, you guys, you absolutely have to bend somewhere. To reduce oil costs you reduce oil demand. Which is kind of a red herring because we're not the only ones using oil, and China and India are just getting their shit online. But you can use less gas either by driving less or driving more efficently.
