De La Hoya vs Mayweather

Recommended Posts

Barely anybody cares about this but UFC President Dana White and Lightweight champ Sean Sherk will be at ringside for the event tonight. White has been trying to entice Mayweather to step into the octagon with Sherk ever since Floyd made his comment about UFC guys being where they are because they couldn't cut it at boxing.

That's incredibly dumb.

Boxing and mma are two completely different things. Obviously any boxer in the world wouldn't be able to win against guy trained to and allowed to use the rest of their bodies and techniques. And if any of the top mma fighters were in a straight boxing match with a top boxer, it wouldn't be fair at all.

Oscar won plenty of big fights without controversy. At lightweight his demolitions of Hernandez and Ruelas were HUGE. The two stoppages of Chavez, clear decision over the solid Miguel Angel Gonzalez, beating Bredahl in his 12th fight, the spectaculear ko of Vargas. Now, one can say that Vargas was damaged already by Trinidad...but by that token the three biggest/clearest victories for Mayweather are probably Gatti/Hernandez/Manfredy, and Oscar had already stopped Arturo & Genaro previously.

The only ones of those that I deem big fights are Hernandez, Chavez and Vargas. Ruelas was untested for the most part. I'll give him the Gonzalez one, that was pretty good.

Vargas just took too many punches on his way to the top, but I don't think that Vargas was damaged goods by the time he fight Oscar.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention the Corrales fight as one of Floyd's biggest wins. That was a savage beating. Floyd's win over Judah still holds a lot of water, as far as I'm concerned. I think Judah still has a lot left.

HBO should show the fight the following Saturday, right?

Actually, they probably won't. Considering that they have no card on the 12th, it's unlikely.

I can't see Oscar winning. Oscar has won so few big fights by non-controversial decisions or KO. And if he does win, I see it being a highly controversial decision, something that would make this fight hurt the sport more than help it.

Oscar's one of the All-Time Greats...what are you talking about?

I was editing to add in the Corrales fight as you typed that, King. Not only a terrible beating, but the added drama of Diego's domestic-violence that PBF was getting 'revenge' for.

Did anybody catch the old PBF replays on Espn2 last night? I missed the first one but caught his ko of Hector Arroyo in his 13th fight and the Gatti massacre again.

While Oscar did get three 'bad' decisions go his way (I personally did have him losing all those fights) it could also be argued that he won two others with Trinidad and Mosely 2.

He definitely won the Trinidad fight. I'm not so sure about the Mosley fight, I need to see it again.

I re-watched/re-scored the Trinidad fight 3 times and came up with one draw and two Oscar wins. He didn't "deserve" to win though. That fight was the bottoming out of my Oscar-hate, and he really turned himself around after the backlash of that night.

I disagree with your assessment of Rafael Ruelas. You should go back and check out his record going into the DLH fight. Ruelas was a champ, something like 40-1, more than a few quality opponents, and serious power at that weight.

Ruelas' record was good, but the only guys of substance that he fought before Oscar were Paez and Pendleton. Only thing bad about Pendleton is that he lost a LOT of fights.

I can't put any stock into Ruelas because he fought a guy that was 7-10, a guy that was 0-3 and a guy that was 1-1-1 in the 2 years leading up to the Oscar fight. At least when Chavez fought his cabdrivers, they were cabdrivers with ring experience.

Fake EDIT: And Ruelas fought a guy that fought Freddie Roach! Funny how that works out.

Look at his record. He should have three more losses on his record than he already does. Whitaker, Quartey and Sturm, btw.

And I won't make it sound like I don't hold ill will towards Oscar. But I do, because of those three shitty decisions.

Honestly...What boxer doesnt have questionable wins?

Five years ago i woulda said Roy Jones...but Jones-Tarver I changed that....

And Oscar's PPV fights have made nearly $500 million not including this one....Fights don't make that much unless you're one of the great ones...

Bernard Hopkins, Pernell Whitaker.

Mainly the level of guys that both fighters fighting tonight are close to reaching. Oscar and Floyd are probably the two best fighters in the world. But both have to win tonight to reach "legend" status, in my book. The winner of this fight goes down in history. The loser will only be remembered as the man that lost this fight and in Oscar's case, the man that never won the mega fight.

Oscar is a great fighter. I will never dispute that. But he does not have a signature win.

I prefer watching guys get off clean shots instead of bumrushing in and only landing one. I love crisp, accurate punching. I'll take that over guys swinging wildly any day. But I will give Oscar his due, he came out there ready to fight and he gave it his all. So I won't talk trash about Oscar until he fights again.

Terrific fight. Oscar's abandonment of the jab that was winning him the fight defies explanation, it certainly wasn't anything PBF was doing that made him stop. It was a very close fight. I still say all the talk about 'saving boxing' (doesn't need salvation) was bullshit but the world was watching last night and they saw a good one.

I wouldn't mind a rematch.

My scorecard, for the record-

1. PBF

2. Oscar

3. PBF

4. Oscar

5. PBF

6. Oscar

7. Oscar

8. Oscar

9. PBF

10. PBF

11. Even

12. Oscar

I had it even halfway through, Oscar took the lead behind a stellar jab, gave up the lead along with the jab in the 9th and tenth, PBF had the better round in the 11th but Oscar was far more aggressive so I called it even and made the championship be decided in the final round. I thought the 12th was one of DLH's best rounds of the entire fight and with that he won the bout by a point on my card.

Not to sound racist, but that sounds like a very typical black boxer.

Their always running their mouths to a ridiculous extent, and when they do get beaten, they have every excuse in the world, and everyone is holding them down. Or, like in the NBA "The refs are calling more fouls on the black guys than the white guys".

Black ballplayers didn't come up with that. That was some study, but since there is more blacks in the NBA, then anything, The refs will always call more fouls on "black players".

But I don't want to interupt you cross burning, so carry on.

It sounds racist, but its not. I have had many black friends while in the service. But, I've just grown tired of the double standard. They're allowed to run their mouths about whatever they want to, and never get in any type of trouble. A white man does the same thing, and he gets lynched by the media.

Floyd has always ran his mouth. And he has always backed it up.

Don't see what you're trying to say other than that all black people are loud and obnoxious, which is wrong. I don't care how much anyone talks trash, if they back it up they have a license to keep doing it. I don't know how I stand on Floyd's comment about MMA, btw. If you matched up, let's just say for the hell of it, Rich Franklin with Floyd in just a pure striking contest, punches and kicks, I think Floyd would beat him. That's what I draw from Floyd's comments, is that their striking is what kept them from being boxers. Like I said, I don't really know how I feel about that.

honestly though...when was the last time there was a credible white boxer to hold any black or latino down
