New Year's Resolutions?

Recommended Posts

This year (2006) I actually kept my new year's resolutions of cutting back on drinking, and most importantly, beginning and maintaining a workout regimen. I've gained 30+ pounds and counting.

I've struggled to come up with resolutions for '07, but I think I'll go with the following:

1. Continue working out and gain 25-30 more pounds. I like to set the bar high. :-P

2. Practice playing guitar and singing at least 5 days per week, so that I can return to (and then exceed) my previous levels of talent and....

3. Form a band. It's been years since I have played in a band. Me, Aaron (bass), and a drummer... We'll rock your fucking face off.

4. Go to school. This is something I've been wanting to do for years. Whether or not I get this chance depends on finances, which is what has stopped me thus far.

5. Finally, I need to improve my judgment in the relationship department. While I've gotten more girls this year than any previous year, I seem to always fall for girls who are manipulative, crazy, slutty, liars, cheaters, or a combination of those. I just want to find a good one.

I guess that's it. There's a little over 3 hours til 2007 and my friends should be arriving any minute... wish me luck!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Last year's: 1. Graduate. 2. Get a job. 3. Lose some weight.

This is probably the first time ever that I actually came through on my resolutions. Usually by January 5th I say fuck it.

This year: 1. Don't get fired/actually learn what I'm doing at my job. 2. Pass as many sections of the CPA exam as possible (all 4 would be lovely, but if I could pass 3 before my Becker license expires I'll be happy). 3. Lose more weight.

True, but it gives a degree of real purpose to the holiday.

Mine is 5,000 pushups and 10,000 situps by March 1st.

The backup is to travel to Arizona and meet Leeners.

1. Work a SPW Show (Indy Promotion in Sacramento)

2. Work a NAW show (Indy Promotion in Modesto CA)

3. Get a better car than I have now...that poor car needs to be put down...after I get something better of course.

4. Get into a relationship.

Just to meet people and have a good time, do well in school.

Since I'm aiming for so much at my school, I can't really say graduate as one of them, since that'll be in `08, but since I'm going part-time this year for four quarters (to gain in-state residency tuition here I have to do this, and it's basically the same as going two semesters at a regular college), I'll find a job that suits my career a bit more, or at least will actually be more of a resume builder than cafe boy or bookseller, which I've been doing the past couple years while in college. So yeah, just to move away from that. I mean, they were talking promotion at my job, but again, I'm bored with the work so I might as well get on with life.

Also, I want to continue my good exercise/health I started this year, keep a more balanced social life (I either cut everyone out or I party way too much) and spend more time away from the computer. That's one we all need to make.

I never stick to resolutions. But I guess to get in better shape(like everyone else at NYE vows) and get some more tattoos I guess. Oh and graduate. I graduate in May so it's a resolution I can stick to.

I vowed to be more successful at work (MetLife), and have a detailed plan to get to where I want to be. I also want to set aside time to get back in the gym daily, as the ol' lady is packing the pounds on me with her "I can eat ice cream and chocolate bars for breakfast and not gain any weight." So ignoring the cravings that come with a pantry stock full of junk food will go hand in hand with the daily exercise.

True, but it gives a degree of real purpose to the holiday.

That makes it a depressing holiday.

If you really want to change something about your life, you'll just do it whenever. Because you want to.

If you only want to do it when the new year comes around, then you'll most likely fail because you're only doing it because another year has gone by... and you'll beat yourself down more when the next year comes and you see you've failed with your goals.

I don't need a resolution to do what I want. New Years just means the calendar rolled around, the world didn't change any differently then it was on December 30th.

I didn't need to sit down and decide "Ok, for 2006, I'll get a raise/promotion/do well at school/have a good relationship". I just did those because I wanted those and set out for them and got it because I made the effort.

Resolutions are just for people to feel like they have a goal in mind but since they couldn't be bothered with it until 1/1, they'll forget it until the next year comes and remember how they failed at something they never made a true effort at.

I set different goals for myself whenever. I look at a new year's resolution as a goal that just happens to be set on the first day of the year.

'sides, without the institution of resolutions, it would be a strictly numerological holiday, something humans don't do. We need something, anything attached to it besides a ripping good hangover on January 1st.

Aren't football games enough? I guess we need to give all the straight edge football hating people something to work with on this day.

New Years' is always a strange day. I always feel like I have no business being off of work/school. Especially after the other holidays.

Correct. Then you get MLK in 2 weeks adding to the other awkward holiday. I'm a white college student/mechanic in 2007 who grew up in a white affluent suburb. Why do I get this day off?

If it makes you feel any better, schools are open here on MLK Day.

Agreed.

Agreed again.

For all reasons above.

They rarely, rarely work. And few people will do something because they said they would on the first of January. People do things on a much, much more basic level. The popular one, the "get in shape one", is usually something accomplished by people who make good choices, not promises. And they're probably already in shape.

I don't usually make resolutions per se as I just make random goals for myself at random times during the year. I'm not a condescending douchebag who looks down their nose at everyone else if they do though. It's nice that people want to better themselves, no matter what time of year it is.

It's a hassle to deal with a lot of people at the gym around this time of year, but meh, you get used to it.

I started it in November, but I want to get down to my old wrestling weight of 165 and get my ass back into shape. I'm down from 200 to about 180 so that's a nice little ego boost, just got to keep at it.
