Or in 03 when the Vikings lost the last game of the season at the last second to help the Packers into the playoffs. '04, yes '03, no, because Green Bay won their game. Had Green Bay lost, then Minnesota would still have gone in spite of the Arizona loss, and that would be a prime example of "backing in" Why do these sorts of things always seem to involve the Vikings?? While this could start a whole debate on its own, if you examine the last few Super Bowl champs (`05 Steelers, `03-`04 Pats, `02 Bucs, `01 Pats, and `00 Ravens) they all had great defenses and beat teams with great offenses to get to the championship game in the first place (look at how the `98 Falcons beat the best offense of all time, the `98 Vikes, or how the lowly 2000 Giants beat the first Culpepper Vikes, or the Pats owning the Colts, and the Steelers winning last year). I can't remember the last team that had a legitimately great offense and a terrible defense that won a championship in the NFL, maybe the 99 Rams? But then again, they won BECAUSE of a great last second one-yard tackle. And they had the most turnovers in the NFL that season. You need a great defense to win games, but a good offense to go along with it will make you a dominant team.

I'm speaking in football terms, not basketball, where it really is the end-all-be-all. No, that's horseshit anywhere. The only way the defense succeeds is if the offense fails, and vice versa. It's a self-fulfilling prophesy. Except in golf, where defense has never won a championship. The ONLY reason the Ravens won the Super Bowl was because of their defense. Without that defense and their crappy inept offense, they wouldnt have even won 3 games that year. The offense didn't score a TD for 5 straight games and they still managed to win 2 of the 5 because the defense only allowed 44 points including a shutout. for cliches I was thinking "I need to step my game up" (before a game) "I stepped my game up" (after a win) and "Give it 110%".. Oh, bullshit. They won the Super Bowl because they were more disciplined than the other team, made plays on offense, and had one of the best offensive lines in football. The defense keeps you IN THE GAME, but it does not win the game. You have to be able to put points on the board. I would say offensive lines win championships, because when was the last time a team with a shitty o-line won it all (never), but it's not glamorous to make such statements.
