ABC Develop Geico Ad Cavemen Into TV Project

A.J. Frutkin

MARCH 02, 2007 -

As network comedy continues to suffer through an extended down-cycle, it's no surprise that the commercials running in those sitcoms often are funnier than the shows themselves. What is surprising is that ABC is now looking to those ads--specifically, the Geico cavemen ads--for inspiration.

The network is developing a half-hour comedy project based on the Geico ads. Produced by ABC TV Studio, the project revolves around three thirtysomething "cavemen" who battle bigotry in modern-day Atlanta.

The pilot was written by Joe Lawson, the copywriter who came up with the cavemen ads at the Richmond, Va.-based Martin Agency.

The reason why the Geico Cavemen commercials are so 'funny' is because the commercials are only 30 seconds long, it's funny in small doses. They should save themselves some money and try to purchase the SNL skits with Caveman Lawyer by the late great Phil Hartman.

First thing I thought of with this thread:

DCLuigi is awesome. Does the best Chris Walken impersonation I've seen.

Why post that? Because it's more clever and entertaining than the idea of this sitcom. I mean, really, they must be really desperate.

EDIT: Crap, embeds don't work on this forum. Ah well. Click the damn links, ya lazy folk.

If only Hartman was still around. That would have been an awesome sweeps appearence for him.

He could of been the long lost father to one of the cavemen. The relationship would be immediatley strained, when the cavemen learns his father married outside the race.

Guest DogOn

I could see this working if it was a cartoon made in the late 1990's and aired 6:30 A.M Sunday on Comedy Central.

So nobody remembers the successful Baby Bob series based off of a fast food commercial? It lasted about 5 weeks.

Believe it or not, it was actually the other way around, he appeared in Quiznos commercials after the show got cancelled. But he had appeared in various dotcom company commercials.

And are we all too young to forget that Joe Isuzu had his own failed sitcom?

Now was it based on Joe Isuzu or are you thinking of Empty Nest, which was the Golden Girls spinoff which ran for like 6 years?

As for the Caveman skein, I see it as something that doesn't make it past the development stage only because the market research on it will be horrible. However if you did a something with the Gecko I could be into seeing that.

Anyone remember "Dinosaurs"? Now that was a good show, ahead of it's time.

Now that show owned, I have a couple of old VHS'. I never could tell whether it was supposed to be for kids or adults. The plots were pretty adult but then again you had Baby and his annoying catchphrases. Yeck.

I have The Complete First and Second Season of Dinosaurs on my NetFlix queue. I think I'm gonna bump it up.

I thought they could have gotten two more good years out of it.

Its certainly a TV-on-DVD series I have an eye on grabbing after I get out of bootcamp and settled in.

the episode Porter was talking about was titled "Steroids to Heaven".

The only episode I remember somewhat vividly was when Baby grew a horn on his head from eating too much sugar but everyone thought the horn made him the king. Kinda weird. He also referred to Earl as Daddy for once.

I like the drug episode, which tells you to "Just Say No" not for the usual reasons, but so that shitty anti-drug sitcom episodes won't have to be made.

Also

"You're not the "thunderlizard", the Tyrannosaurus is."

"How would you know that?"

"I dated one in highschool."

I'm curious to see if anyone watched this tonight. I didn't watch it all but some of it was actually kind of funny.

I saw the network premiere tonight, and marked out hard for the surly caveman from the inaugural commercial. I think that I'll probably tune in for the (probably short) time that it is on, even though I usually dislike sitcoms.

I like Cavemen.

Haha, Cavemen in normal clothes look funny!

Also, I hate this. I have it on as background noise / curiosity on the Seattle feed and it just seems to exist without a point. I liked seeing the guy from the commercial but it sucks he's not the focal point (which is pretty sad when you think about it).

I do like the guy from Grandma's Boy / Blades of Glory, though.
