NCAA Basketball Tournament 1st/2nd Round Thread

Recommended Posts

For some reason that is completely unclear to me, my CBS affiliate decided to forego the WSU/Oral Roberts game even though the WSU campus is <300 miles away in favor of this thrilling shootout between Butler and Old Dominion. 7-7, eight minutes in. I'd usually be happy to get the better national matchup, but being a former WSU student and all, I kind of want to see them play.

My computer's too slow for the MMOD to be enjoyable at all, so I guess I'll have to take a shower and go down to the sports bar in a little bit.

Interesting choice of games here... it's like CBS purposely put the teams nobody has seen and/or gives a shit about in this block.

I'd rather watch Georgetown than Butler-ODU but I guess CBS wanted to give me a couple hours to get something done around the house.

Davidson should have kept going with the 3-point gimmick shit. They stopped and they lost, no sympathy for them.

Oral Roberts is giving Wazoo fits. In all the matchups already decided I had either team losing in the next round, so no worries there.

Penn kinda hanging with A&M so far, which is impressive.

Belmont sticking near Georgetown going towards the half is mystifying. That's gotta change in the 2nd half, seems almost unreal.

Geez, it took me long enough to remember why my region is getting Wazzu/Oral Roberts. I'm definitely rooting for the Cougs - it seems like it was ages ago that I was on the court when Derrick Low dropped 30 in the second half on my high-school team - okay, it was ages ago.

Mid-major basketball is the best.

Whoever wins this game will beat Maryland. When teams come out shitty in the first round and win (going to happen with one of them), they're going to play a world-beater game in the 2nd round.

I'm in 12 pools but only four of them matter (any pool that pays out less then $200 or doesn't give me significant bragging rights were left to random selection). The most important one, at my old job with a pay-out of $1,000-1,500, I am 3-0 but I'm guessing everyone picked those three games since they were pretty standard and obvious.

But Maryland played far from their best today as well.

Looking at the print-out of the bracket of my big money pool, I realize that I accidentally picked George Washington over Wash. St in the second round and have Albany upsetting Virginia in the first round. Damn it. I suppose that's what I get for not double-checking stuff before I sent it in.

They got caught off-guard by gimmick stuff. Once Davidson stopped doing it and got tired, they had no chance in the halfcourt. I've never been high on Maryland anyway, but I thought they would hold off Davidson.

Thought it was funny while it lasted, would have liked to see a Butler/ODU-Davidson matchup.

You could do worse for upsets, Oral Roberts will handle Wazoo lol. I've already lost 400 bucks today. Time to go back to work. Fuck Stanford in their asshole.

Yeah, U of L with the utter bitchslap of Stanford. That one went pretty much exactly as I figured. I knew Stanford would be half asleep in the first half, and Pitino must have as well.

That said, why is it so unfair for U of L to get to play in Lexington? EVERY year there's always some ACC team like UNC or Duke that gets to play in Greensboro (hello, this year UNC plays in Winston Salem, home of a rival team Wake). Or for instance Gonzaga getting to play in Seattle in the tourney. Or Villanova getting to literally play at home in Philly last year due to a technicality. Yet the one time U of L gets to play at Rupp Arena it seems like everyone is up in arms about it. We can't go to friggin Ogden, Utah every year.

Bracket wise, I haven't been so hot thus far. Took a chance on some upsets that didn't pan out like Davidson and Oral Roberts. The obvious stuff like U of L, G'Town I had. BC I also had. Need to rest up now for the late games, especially IU vs. Gonzaga.

Cabbageboy, I think it's pretty obvious why people are complaining. It's because Louisville's a lower seed than Texas A&M. Nova was a 1 seed when they played at home and UNC is a 1 seed this year. The idea is that only 1-4 seeds should be protected and that a 6 seed shouldn't be at home against a 3. With that said, it makes for an easy upset to pick so I don't really care.

As for my brackets, I'm 6-0 in games that have been decided, but I'm feeling real shaky on this ODU/Butler game. I flip-flopped on it about 10x before finally going with the genius logic that at least one 12 seed had to beat a 5 seed and ODU was closest.

Edit: Maybe 6-0's a little premature. I guess TAMU's still only up 6 on Penn.

I love looking at the random brackets that I filled out without thinking and ended up having stuff like Arizona reaching the E8, two sets of 14 seeds winning the open round (MOH and Wright) and even took a 9 seed (X) to the title game. Sadly, I'll probably do better on the joke brackets then I do on my big money pools.

Nobody likes it because they're a 6 seed playing at home. That's a big fucking difference compared to the rest of the teams you mentioned, who got big seeds.

Butler's getting my money back.

As soon as someone brings up a possible upset on this board, they get shot to shit by the favorite. Please don't bring it up until the final minute.

10-0 run for A&M is gonna end this game it looks like. Brutal how the major conference teams can just snuff out a mid-major with like 2 minutes of basketball. Brutal.
