I wonder why they didnt release that deleted scene kill of Matthews? Interesting to see that picture, that certainly shows he's pretty much done for.

Lame. Without Jigsaw or Amanda, the series ended at Saw III for me. Hell, even better, Saw II. The series was never high art, but first was somewhat enjoyable - a psychological thriller trapped in a horror film's body, as Whannell described it. They're turning it into an annual Halloween torture-porn freakshow. I loathe the term 'torture porn', as it seems such a pop culture label, and Saw really didn't fit it.... to begin with. Now they're simply catering to the masses.

Whoah, bit of a long rant.

Most actors are happy when they get asked back to a role. Not Donnie Wahlberg. Though left for dead at the end of Saw II, he was granted more screen time in Saw III. That seemed to be the end, but it looks like there's more Wahlberg in Saw IV.

"Yeah, I got a scene in it," said Wahlberg. "They kept me alive. I told them I wanted to die in part three and they took out my death. I just lie there and nothing happens."

[spoiler alert]

Even Jigsaw died in Saw III but he's back. The filmmakers are keeping a tight lip on the timeframe that allows such actors to return, but Wahlberg was so annoyed that he spilled that officer Matthews still exists in present tense.

"No, they kept me alive. I don't want to talk about it."

That was an article on rottentomatoes.com

I agree, but I'll probably go see it just for the twist ending. Hopefully they'll finally reveal the fates of Dr. Gordon and Det. Matthews. If there is a new apprentice, it will make me feel better if its somebody we know instead of some character that's introduced in SAW 4.

What if the new apprentice is Det. Matthews?

The Donnie Wahlberg stuff just sounds like a stunt to create hype.

Agreed. If he was so annoyed than why did he agree to appear in IV? I guess he's really hard up for cash. ;)

Synopsis from IGN:

Jigsaw and his apprentice Amanda are dead. Upon the news of Detective Kerry's murder, two seasoned FBI profilers, Agent Strahm (Scott Patterson) and Agent Perez, arrive at the depleted police precinct and help veteran Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) sift through Jigsaw's latest grizzly game of victims and piece together the puzzle. However, when SWAT Commander Rigg, the last officer untouched by Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), is suddenly abducted and thrust into the madman's harrowing game, the officer has but ninety minutes to overcome a series of interconnected traps...or face the deadly consequences. Rigg's citywide pursuit leaves a wake of dead bodies, and Detective Hoffman and the FBI uncover long hidden clues that lead them back to Jigsaw's ex-wife Jill (Betsy Russell). The genesis of Jigsaw's evil is unveiled, exposing the puppet master's true intentions and the sinister plan for his past, present and future victims.

Here are the possible candidates for the new Jigsaw and why:

Lawrence Gordon - Even though James Wan and Cary Elwes have said that he is practically dead, his death was never confirmed or strangely his whereabouts not mentioned at all in the previous sequels so there is a very small possibility that he might be around. Jigsaw got ahold of a lot of medical equipment and supplies with apparant ease as well as access to an ambulance in record time, I wouldn't be surprised if he got help from Dr. Gordon. After all, he is a doctor that showed that he had the survival instinct Jigsaw was looking in his victims and turning out to be a villain is nothing new to Cary Elwes. Chances are this won't happen since Elwes sued Lions Gate and he has gotten fat over the years since SAW I.

Eric Matthews - He turned into a crooked cop because he wanted to punish the wicked. A smart guy who got out of the bathroom trap that took Dr. Gordon almost two hours to get of in about five minutes that, despite sustaining heavy injury doing so, remained with all limbs intact because he also showed that had the will to survive. He was originally supposed to die in SAW III, but it was changed for some reason. That makes me already suspicious. Jigsaw hints that he might have seen Matthews following the sewer fight. Plus Eric was seen behind Kerry moments before she was kidnapped (wouldn't surprise me since its been hinted that she was the reason Eric got divorced).

Jeff Denlon - Lost his wife due to his vengeful ways. If he loses his daughter, he will have lost all that means to him. Carrying Jigsaw's legacy would be a perfect way for him to start a new life.

Detective Hoffman - We saw him in SAW 3 pocketing evidence and we know so little about his character. Who said Det. Matthews had to be the only crooked cop? Hoffman could've been the one who gave Jigsaw the records of all the criminals Eric arrested as well as private information about anybody in the system so Jigsaw would know names and addresses of people he wanted to kidnap and test.

Jill Tuck - The ex-wife of John. She could've known what he was up to and even helped him with his work. Seeing how he has passed on, I could see her continue her late husband's work.

Even though they no longer have anything to do with writing the stories for the new batch of SAW sequels (by their own choice), James Wan and Leigh Whannell are credited on Saw IV as Executive Producers, that means they put their stamp of approval on the script before it gets shot. If there was something in danger of ruining the movie, it would be discarded. I'm pretty pumped for SAW IV next this weekend!

I wonder how long they read the script before they gave it their seal of approval? +/- on the time? I say 15 minutes.

Like last years revelation that there would be a 4 and 5, now I read that 6 is also planned. I really hope everyone sees how stupid this is and avoid Saw 4 so they might rething doing 2 (and more inevitably) more movies...its just stupid at this point.

Hey, so far so good by my book. All three Saws have a solid story that intertwines into each one. If they were just stand-alone BS sequals that offer little to no backstory on the mythology behind Jigsaw and others, I would totally agree.

I would think Wan and Whannell read through the entire script, this is their franchise, they are still going to be making money from it themselves, and seem very complacent on the storyline behind all of this. The writers for the next three Saws I have faith in as well, they wrote Feast, which is one of my favorite horror flicks in years.

They're gonna make money regardless because people are mindless enough to go see SAW rehashes year after year because they're really filled with blood and gore all over the place. You cant have me believe for one second that more than a handful of people went to see SAW 3 for the storyline/plot developments.

Also, Im betting more time was spent designing the death contraptions than writing the actual script for SAW 4. The first movie was a good movie and they have since managed to flush everything down the toilet in favor of rehashes with more gore factor that makes more money.

Have you even watched all of them? How can you say they are rehashes?

Sure, they bring the gore, which honestly, considering they have the peak weekend of the year to do so, isn't really something that anyone should be up in arms about. It's horror - it's around Halloween - OF COURSE its going to be gorey. But let's not be naive, these movies aren't THAT mindless - as I said, there is mythology and backstory into each one of the films, based FROM the first one. And it appears we will be seeing alot of the same with part IV.

My point is that beyond the blood, these films have a lot better overall story than it commonplace with most mainstream horror. I'm not saying thats the sole reason as the sequels progess, that is why more people check them out, but I think the overall package is what brings people in. If it is just gore and gore alone that brings people out en masse, Hostel 2 would have done much better, for example.

I really liked the first two, but the third tipped the scale a little bit more towards Gore than Story and lost me. I won't be in a huge rush to go see this one, but I will check it out sometime.

I actually thought that the third was the best one. I saw it last Wednesday, and I'd say it's easily better than the second one (which was, IMO, better than the first). The one thing I wish was different about it was that there was 10 more minutes, so the "revelations" weren't so rushed. But that's something that happens in any movie where there's some huge revelation that needs some thought put into it at the end.

Also, a little more time for backstory on Jeff would've been preferable, but not necessary, because the story of

a father using this time to get revenge for his dead son

is pretty self-explanatory. It'll be interesting to see how Jigsaw's past plays into the next few sequels, much more interesting than the endless add-on's to the mythologies of Jason Voorhees, Michael Meyers, Chucky (and subsequently Tiffany), and even Freddy Krueger.
