Ripper Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Brokeback Mountain is a mediocre to decent movie with BEAUTIFUL direction. The story itself leaves alot to be desired. If it wasn't for the gay factor, people would see how "blah" that movie was.
SamoaRowe Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 I found Brokeback Mountain to be outstanding, in terms of acting, story, and direction. Most of the people "pissed off" by it never saw it in the first place, so I don't see quite how that ties to the percieved quality of the film. I never quite understood the love for Ray. It's an alright movie, good performance by Jamie Foxx. But there wasn't anything strikingly good about it, several parts felt hokey and melodramatic. Anyone want to sell me on why it deserved this much praise?

I mean make the two male characters any type of forbidden love (white and black in an earlier time or a small town, two women...whatever) and you have a pretty "eh" movie. The acting was fine(ledger was pretty damn great....not so much for jake)...although those accents were horrible. I can't say enough for the direction though. that was a fucking thing of beauty and Ang Lee definately deserved his Oscar for that one. I was just waiting to be blown away by a great story and it was just pretty generic. And the ending felt cliched.
Downhome Posted May 31, 2007 Author Report Posted May 31, 2007 Two more that I believe should be added are Chaplin's The Great Dictator and The Shawshank Redemption. While TGD isn't even on the nominated list, TSR was and I think that enough time has gone by for it to be recognized on this list. TSR has aged so well, and as time goes by it seems like more and more people view it as an American classic.
Downhome Posted May 31, 2007 Author Report Posted May 31, 2007 I did a search for TGD but didn't see it pop up, but I guess it's because of the way it's typed out.
DMann2003 Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Geez, is the AFI so desperate for donations that it needs to do another one of these lists, and it's first repeat at that. I will say I expect "Titanic" and "LOTR" to pop up on the new list. Seriously "Pirates" is fun, but one great performance by Johnny Depp better not nudge films like "Network" or "Chinatown" off the list. Still pissed that "Nashville" isn't on that list.
Ravenbomb Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 I don't mind them updating their top 100. There's some great movies that came out since then, and some great ones that were left off the first time 'round that could maybe get added.
Henry Spencer Posted June 1, 2007 Report Posted June 1, 2007 Still pissed that "Nashville" isn't on that list. Seriously. As far as American films go, it's top ten easily.

DMann2003 Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Fuckin' A "Nasville", should've been there last time
foleyfanforever88 Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Titanic at #83 is ridiculous..it's so much better than that. Glad to see Toy Story on the list.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Raging Bull fourth? Wow. That makes Citizen Kane, Casablanca and Dr. Strangelove the top three. No complaints there regardless of the order.
Epic Reine Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Dr. Strangelove was already mentioned. I like Raging Bull and all but #4? That's a bit of a strech I'd say.
Hawk 34 Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Raging Bull fourth? Wow. That makes Citizen Kane, Casablanca and Dr. Strangelove the top three. No complaints there regardless of the order. Kane and Godfather are the top two. Strangelove was #39. In the end, they didn't add many movies from that list in the past decade.
DMann2003 Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 They dropped off Close Encounters...yet kept Deer Hunter :-( Great, give away the ending to Kane
Ravenbomb Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Requiem for a Dream, Memento, Eternal Sunshine, Se7en, A Face in The Crowd, and The Trial still get no love
bob_barron Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 22 films were dropped off. I was disappointed that once again, they ignored almost everything in the last 20 years.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 They dropped off Close Encounters...yet kept Deer Hunter :-( Great, give away the ending to Kane I think 66 years more than exceeds the statute of limitations.
DMann2003 Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 If this List had been made 5-6 years ago, Blair Witch would have been on it- Amazing how a film can develop such a media sensation and be forgotten about so soon afterwards, the film did gross like 150 million on a 35,000 dollar budget.
bob_barron Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Blair Witch would not have been on it. No way. Sixth Sense making it on there is terrible.
treble Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Whoa, Vertigo really shot up there. I was getting worried that it wasn't going to make it, top 10 is awesome.
The Amazing Rando Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 City Lights jumped 65 spots. Beat that.
Vern Gagne Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Why? It's not a knock on the movie, but what happened between the originial list, and the new list?
DMann2003 Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 They dropped off Close Encounters...yet kept Deer Hunter :-( Great, give away the ending to Kane I think 66 years more than exceeds the statute of limitations. Some 10 year old budding film geek is going to go through life knowing what Rosebud is, who Mrs. Bates really is and who Luke's father is before actually seeing the films, I just find that sad is all.

DMann2003 Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Hah, The Searchers went from the 90's to #12, I think it has the best jump. Now, which film fell the furthest without falling off

I don't think it takes away from any of those films at all.
