I haven't seen it yet. but this movie made $76.5 million this week and broke The Return of the King's previous December opening record.

I was really entertained when watching the movie, but when I read criticism of the film everyone's pretty accurate with their gripes. Going in you just got to know to try and overlook the plot holes and enjoy it for what it is.

Great acting by Smith and the dog ...what I liked the dog. CGI on the landscapes looked great, the mood was great. The cgi on the monsters, mutants, whatever they ended up being was decent, but way too cartoony for being a live-action movie. I liked the movie enough to buy it on dvd, but I would have liked the book ending to be left alone. I think the movie ending worked fine though.

Should have stuck closer to the book. The end kinda pissed me off. How did anyone think that was a better explaination of the title than the books brilliant one?

 

Smith was great though. ANd I am not a fan of the guys acting. He was the highlight of the movie. But man....they should have stuck with the intelligent vampires that looked normal at day and looked barbaric at night.

 

That would have been an awesome movie.

Book discussion and how it relates to the film...

 

I haven't seen the film, but I've been reading some posts and it seems like the film is way different from the book.

 

One of my favourite parts of the book was the fact that the mutated vampires at the end were starting up a new society and that Neville had to die for that society to move on. The human race as it was was over, and a new one was beginning. It was moral relativity, in that they weren't human, but they were so close to human that Neville saw fit to take his life in order to give them a chance to move beyond their blood thirst and perhaps develop a similar way of life (or better) than the one that was previously lived in. The way they incorporated legend, and myth, with the reality and perspectives at the time was fascinating in that it made you think if that was the same way it happened in our real history, in some way, shape, or form.

 

It doesn't seem like the movie touches on this at all, which is weird cause I think that is what the book was building to all along. Plus, how could they not have him being a self-loathing, sexually frustrated, alcoholic? That was his thing!

Saw it twice this weekend. Not because it was an awesome movie but because of people wanting me to go with them. Haven't read the book, but I know the jist of it. The guy I saw it with the first time though loves the book, and I must have heard a "what the fuck?" from him about 10 times during that ending.

 

I thought it was good, until the last 20/30 minutes or so.

 

Once the other survivors show up it goes WAY the fuck downhill. The dog was awesome though. The vampires really sucked, IMO. The car trap seems a bit complex for them to set up, but I can forgive that. But the endless hordes of vampires at the end were just stupid and annoying. And how exactly did the vampires know about Fred? They can't see what Will.I.Am.Legend does during the day.

 

And I REALLY thought the helicopter crashing into the helicopter to kill his family was retarded and pointless. Show them flying off into the distance and that's the last he's seen them. That would work a lot better.

 

Speaking of his flashbacks, during the first one he's fallen asleep in the bathtub, yet wakes up in bed. Huh?

And if they sealed off the island and blew up the bridges, how did the annoying survivors just drive in and out of the city?

 

 

And one minor thing unrelated to the plot at all. The 2nd time I saw the film the bottom part was cut off so you couldn't read the scroll during the newscast, but the 1st time I saw it you could so I focused on that. It said something like "Giants beat Patriots for second time this season." So did they not realize that's not possible outside of the superbowl, or did they imply that the Giants did win the superbowl, and that the news ticker would just say that and not GIANTS WIN SUPERBOWL XLIII?

Everything said already is spot on. The last third of this movie made me feel how I imagine stupid people felt about the last third of No Country for Old Men.

I had so much expectations for this movie that I knew it wasn't going to live up to the hype I had in my head.

 

And it sounds like I really need to read this book. The ending sounds about 10 times better. But everyone here knows how 99% of the population like their movie endings: happy!

Hahah, I noticed that right away too! I guess there could have been some kind of divisional re-alignment or something. Or maybe someone mixed up the Jets and Giants.

 

As for the movie, the book ending sounds much more interesting. Apparently they reshot the ending for the movie, so who knows what the original ending was. I'd be interested in checking out the DVD just to see the alternate ending.

Just watched it online. Movie lost me in the 20-30 minutes or so. Also, any CG living creature (vampires, deer or Lion's) all looked like shit. They did not look even remotely real which really took me out of a pretty believable world they created.

The 'Lead' Vampire setting up the traps and becoming increasingly aggressive towards Robert after he stole his 'daughter'. This hints that the Vampires were establishing some sort of society and had some sort of intelligence. But it was never really acknowledged in the film, and was pretty much thrown out at the end when the horde attacked.

 

The parts I enjoyed the most were basically Robert going about his every day life and slowly degenerating, becoming paranoid and almost a little schizophrenic.

 

Would have been nice to have seen the book ending, it would have fit in a bit better with the hints that the 'vampires' were slowly becoming socially apt amongst themselves.

Good point. It seemed to have left the door open for something that was never really touched upon.

To me, the two best scenes in the movie were

The scene in the video store with him talking to the mannequins

and

The scene with Nevile yelling at "Frank" and generally going nuts, right up until the trap got sprung.

If there'd been more of that I think the movie would've been a lot better.

I too found it odd that the movie basically ignores the vampires evolving and becoming more intelligent. In fact Neville seems to think they are devolving more and more.

 

I can already see people parodying certain scenes of this movie. The whole scene where Smith talks to the mannequin and begs for it to talk to him. Smith reciting Shrek line by line.

 

There was one part that I felt they were building to but never happened. I kept thinking one of the vampires would end up disguised as a mannequin, especially once they figured out how to use one for the trap. It would have been an interesting way to show their growing intelligence, and would have been a nice shock moment too.

I agree again. WHen it was over and I saw it was only around 90 minutes I was suprised. They definitely could have added at least another half hour to 45 mins, especially after knowing that there was alot left out or changed from the book.

Thought the movie was pretty good, the direction was ace and the feeling of isolation was perfect.

 

And it's nice to see that in the year 2009 Warner Bros control the entire movie world, with films such as Legally Blonde 3, Batman vs Superman, Green Latern and Teen Titens.

 

Thought Smith was great and it's probably the first film I've seen in ages where he doesn't annoy me.

This movie definately seemed like it could have added approx 20 minutes to explain more about the virus or maybe more about the psyche of the vampire creatures...

 

One thing I didn't get is why the vampire things had super human strength. I mean these things were climbing light poles, running into cars and making them spin/tip over, scaling the walls of houses. I mean on one hand they were supposedly so dumb that they were willing to come out into the sun and nearly burn themselves because of hunger, yet in the next sequence they are building elaborate traps. I think more could have been done to explain the vampire creatures evolving or becoming smarter.

 

I did enjoy the flick, but it kind of makes me either want to read the book or at least see whatever they had planned for the original ending.

Oh, one other thing that bothered me.. was that the vamps were CGI. I know, I know, it's a common complaint.. but, I swear to god they all looked like they had variations of the Hulk's face from the movie a few years back with Eric Bana...

I just got back from seeing "I Am Legend". I really enjoyed it for the most part. I found it to be quite tense, and scary at points. I thought the ending though was a total cop out, and those "vampires" looked like they'd walked straight out of a 360 game. It'd have been a ton better if it were actors in makeup, than complete CG. Smith impressed me here, he's pretty great.

 

Oh, and best performance by an animal ever?
