This Week in Baseball 6/11 - 6/17

Recommended Posts

Brewers beat the heck out of the Twins last night at the Metrodome, 11-3. Geoff Jenkins hit his career 4th grand slam, and Prince Fielder hit his 24th homer of the season. The Brewers have won three in a row since getting no-hit.

Don't know if it was already discussed, but since Chris Capuano has gone on the DL, the Brewers have called up top pitching prospect Yovani Gallardo from AAA. He may start on Monday.

Erik Bedard pitches a good shutout game through seven innings, and was put back in at the beginning of the 8th. Not a bad idea at first, but his pitch count was close to 110. He gives a homer, no biggie I was thinking. Then the bullpen blows it away, losing 7-3.

Holy shit! A brawl at Wrigley?!?!?!? Chris Young hit Derrek Lee and it looked like nothing out of the ordinary, but suddenly...holy shit. Carlos Zambrano's gonna whoop somebody's ass.

Looks like Chris Young said something as the camera cut back to Lee, who was saying, "WHAT, WHAT?"

What a visual of the Cub players literally jumping on top of Lee to prevent him from doing anything. Coming in a close second was Carlos Zambrano running around with his fucking belt in his hand.

Looking back at replays, it seems like it might have had something to do with yesterday's game with the homerun by Soriano where he moonwalked up the first base line. Still, Young threw right at Lee's head/wrist. I don't know what Young said to Lee going up the line, but Lee threw the first punch...even though I don't think either guy connected. Welp, there's at least two suspensions on the day, let's see what Big Z does in the top of the 5th...

Jake Peavy's comments certainly made this look intentional, even if it wasn't necessarily the case. Either way, you can tell neither Lee nor Young throw down too often.

I thought there was a quotation yesterday by a pitcher (for either team) essentially saying he was going to hit somebody.

EDIT: Jake Peavy: "I didn't appreciate that. Just play the game," Peavy said after the Padres were defeated 4-1 at Wrigley Field. "They pay him $136 million to hit home runs. They don't pay him to be a circus act on the field. If I think a player shows me up like that, I like the next guy to take one in the stinkin' ribs."

What a fucking piece of shit. Grow up. But the debate on whether the players should "police" themselves can go on forever.

Jake Peavy said yesterday that, because of Soriano admiring his homerun off of David Wells, somebody on the Cubs shoulda got plunked. The whole event seemed intentional. Lipreading, it looked like the conversation went something like...

Chris Young: something something...I'm not sure what he said cuz the camera wasn't on him.

Derrek Lee: What, what? Is that right?

Chris Young: Get your ass on first. I didn't throw at your fuckin' head.

Then the phantom punches started. I gotta give credit to the Cubs that when they brawl, they at least ya know...attempt to brawl, either with each other or other teams. When the benches cleared in the 'Stros/Rockies game a few weeks ago, it was just a lot of standing around and posturing.

Edit: I can totally understand Peavy's point. I can't stand the guy's that admire their homeruns or bebop up the line or pitchers that like...juke and jive all over the mound after striking a guy out. I just don't like guys trying to show up other guys. On the other hand, I don't think you're supposed to come out and say things like Peavy said.

Motherfucker threw at Lee's broken wrist and we all know it. Young's a control guy. That got away from him? My fucking ass. Two S.D. pitchers are on the record expressing that they were going to retaliate. Derrek Lee is the nicest, most level-headed guy on the Cubs. This wasn't just a pitch that got away.

That said, I don't want Zambrano to retaliate, because that's counter-productive and stupid. Let's just move on and win this.

I don't like it either, but I don't see how throwing near a guy's head is any more mature.

It's really not. I'm not in favor of headhunting, but, ya know...if a guy shows you up on a homerun like Soriano did, I think he's entitlted to either be knocked on his ass the next at-bat or take a breaking ball in the ribs.

No, he ISN'T entitlted to be hit with a 90-mph projectile. These aren't robots out there. All this "wurr gonna git you back" shit is for mouth-breathers. Why should Derrek Lee take a pitch to his previously injured wrist because of what Soriano may have done? Come on. They're not robots out there. If you're that fucking sensitive about people being excited about their achievements, fuck off and sell insurance.

Well, of course he doesn't deserve to get a 90-mph fastball thrown at his head/formerly broken wrist, but I think that most major league pitchers, unless they're being dicks can either knock a guy down, brush a guy back, or throw a changeup/offspeed pitch to send a message without heaving a fastball at the guy's coconut. Chris Young, incidentally, was being a dick by throwing at Lee's head. First off, he wasn't the guy that tried to show your team up. Second, he's a very well-liked, well-respected player. Third, dude had a broken wrist last year so you definitely shouldn't throw AT HIS WRIST. If it were me, I would've hit Caesar Izturis in the ass with a curveball or something.

I just don't get all this "unwritten rule" bullshit about never showing emotions. Grow up.

Thank God these guys don't play basketball with black kids; they'd be in therapy after 10 minutes.

Zambrano took a no-hitter through 22 outs, so good for him, but man, the Cubs need to fucking score today, geez.

Looks like Zambrano's going to lose despite giving up two hits, one run and going nine.

I bet John Kruk still doesn't think that's a quality start. I mean he did lose

Thanks for the highly demanded Brewer Report.

It's fun to read the White Sox assclown fans chiming in on yesterday's fight. Lee is a pussy for throwing a punch at a guy who aimed a fastball at his head, but last year, that one reliever was a pussy for declining to throw a fastball at someone. How does that work, exactly? Should you, or should you not engage in this crap? I guess it depends on which side of town you're from. These are the same idiots who think "dose propellerheads are rooning baseball," and think Kyle Orton should be starting for the Bears. Such knuckledraggers.
