Moving to D.C.

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be moving to the D.C. metro area with my girlfriend in a little over a month. I was just wondering if there was anything I should know about the area. I thought there was some sort of card or pass that residents could purchase for the Metro, but I'm not sure if that's correct or not.

Also, where do we avoid going if we don't like being shot at?

Thanks.

It's not D.C., but it's definitely the D.C. metro area. Both Arlington and Alexandria are right across the Potomac by metro or any number of parkways and bridges. I live in Arlington now, and it's a mile or a couple metro stops into the city.

You buy metrocards (paper tickets) or a Smartrip (rechargeable plastic) to ride the metro (and the metrobus), but there's no monthly pass like you can get in some cities. Gotta pay each way--the minimum fare is $1.35 a trip. This map is the bible as far as figuring out routes, commutes, and fares.

As for not getting shot--D.C. has four quadrants. Stay out of Northeast and Southeast (except right around Capitol Hill), and you'll probably stay bullet-free, though there are okay parts scattered throughout. I think Richmond or Detroit have taken over the mantle of the Murder Capital in recent years. Considering how retarded the housing market is here, you guys are probably gonna want to split a 1-bedroom or a studio.
