A 'perfect' cloak, two sets of shields, 5 billion disruptor banks.... I mean, come one. Sure, it made the space battles something to behold (and I LOVED the effects work- and a lot of times i can forgive a bad story if it has good effects), but that ship was just to unbeleiveable, even for Star Trek. It was loads better than II and maybe better than I, but I flip flop on that. It was solid, fun and coherent. So was Cloverfield. Neither of which, by the way, did Abrams write. He didn't direct Cloverfield, he produced it. There's quite a bit of positive stuff coming from Star Trek, from Nimoy endorsing Quinto to Kevin Smith saying it was working. bobobrazil1984 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2008 I agree. the stuff with the kid kirk and the car just seems stupid. The rest of it seems pretty outstanding. I love Sylar as Spock. Too many people think of Spock as this emotionless robot but ppl got to remember he's half human and is always struggling to hold back his human emotions. Looks great. The “Star Trek” film, directed by J. J. Abrams (“Lost,” “Alias”) and scheduled to open on May 8, depicts the earliest adventures of Kirk, Spock and McCoy as young recruits of the Starfleet Academy. That film was written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (both of “Fringe” and “Transformers”), and produced by Mr. Abrams and Damon Lindelof, a creator and executive producer of “Lost.” Mr. Kurtzman, Mr. Orci and Mr. Lindelof will be writing and producing the planned sequel. Mr. Abrams and his producing partner, Bryan Burk, will also produce, but no director has been announced. The sequel, the 12th entry in the “Star Trek” franchise, is planned for a summer 2011 release. Conspiracy_Victim 0 Report post Posted April 8, 2009 Well, they snuck in a screening in Austin by pulling a bait and switch with Wrath of Khan. Knowles is practically wetting himself over it. Sounds like Pine manages to pull off a slightly less "I'm awesome" Kirk, and Quinto balances the human and Vulcan sides of Spock without tipping too far either way. Remember when "Bond fans" bashed Casino Royale before it was released because it was different from what they grew up watching THEN came to love it afterwards? Frosty 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2009 I saw this this afternoon and I was never a fan of Star Trek, and I liked it. It was well written (with a decent amount of cheese tossed in as well), the effects were awesome, it had decent action, and the way the story pieced together with each cast member joining the crew was solid. But here's a question that needs to be asked: Does it really matter if the Trekkies love this movie? With Nemesis we found out exactly how many total die hards the series has (43 million dollars domestic, 24 million overseas). So it's not like they should be catered to at the expense of a mainstream audience. I actually rented the various Next Generation movies yesterday and watched Generations and Nemesis. Oddly enough I thought Nemesis was easily the stronger of the two. It's hardly some Batman and Robin type movie that should wreck a franchise for years.
