This Week In Baseball 8/20-8/26

Apparently Wickman was released because he refused to pitch in a game where the Braves were up 4 runs and thus could not earn a save. It was basically a clubhouse decision to get rid of him after that point

Yeah, spot-on, but Zydrunas Ilgauskas is still the king of "uh, we're a man short, can your dad suit up?"

What an unmitigated slaughter, this Sox-Sox series.

Also, Prince Fielder dropped his three-game suspension and Selig knocked it down to two games. Good for him.

Glad we got a competitive FOX Saturday game.

Methinks it's time for the White Sox to reboot their "sign hard throwers and don't worry about where the ball ends up" philosophy.

Should they really be using the fireworks when a homer cuts the lead to 11?

Some Guy NMB (5:48:57 PM): should they really be shooting off fireworks down by 11?

lol

You gotta give the 20 White Sox fans there something to cheer for.

Oden has to make the all-dad team too. The Cavaliers (LeBron's teammates) call him LeBron's dad.

In the event the Cubs win the Central, they'd better pray a team that doesn't reside in Arizona wins the west. They've won a grand total of nine games in Arizona since 1999.

Oh, and Kerry Wood still sucks.

I usually don't get into bashing umps, but the home plate ump in Arizona tonight is atrocious. The strike zone for both teams seems to vary from inning-to-inning. Craig Monroe just got called out on strikes in a huge situation, with the third strike requiring some sort of oar to make contact with.

The Phils are now 7 back in their division. Unless they sweep the Mets this week that ship has sailed. The wild card is rapidly slipping away, though a win today would bring them back within two. I just don't feel they have the arms to win this year.

And I'll start next week's topic later this afternoon. The weekly topic should be done by someone who contributes to the thread after the initial post.

Since Jeff Keppinger was called back up to the majors in July, he has only failed to get a hit in four games in which he had an official at bat. Two of those games were pinch hit appearances.

It's a thread to talk about baseball. Why does it matter who starts it?

Watching the Braves season slip away is depressing.

Hey, my post-uhhh, post-first-post contributions are usually more than my thread-starting contributions!

EDIT: Oh man the Red Sox are so good it's scary.

Crowd went wild for that one, too. True Chicago baseball fans won't support a losing team, indeed.

Well I don't think Scheurholz expected the team, aside from Georgia Tex and a few other guys to shit the bed.

I also wouldn't say they mortaged their fulture. Scheurholz always keeps the farm system well stocked and is history of trading top prospects indiciate they never turn out.

He absolutely made the right decision in trading for Texiera, no matter how they finish

Yeah, the Braves aren't looking as scary as forecasted, are they. Well, so ends the America's Team era. They're going to be kinda bad for a while.

Jason Marquis, also kinda bad, giving up a home run and a walk when presented with a 3-0 lead before taking the mound.

omg it's 11-1 Red Sox. Papelbon is coming in to close. haha. Hand the world championship to the Red Sox. Royals up a run on the Tribe. Twins can gain a game! They're hanging in there.

I'll never understand how you can make millions of dollars, but can't execute one of the game's most basic actions (the bunt).

Thank god the Cubs are done with the west coast. The DBacks continue to defy the odds and win game after game.

Are the 2007 Diamondbacks like the 2003 Marlins? Conor Jackson, Chris Synder, and Mark Reynolds will surely capture America's heart.
