Cheech Tremendous Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 Do the 2007 Phillies, at 2 whole days, hold the distinction of the fewest days a division winner had in first place, even if shared? I don't think so. The 2006 Minnesota Twins won the division on the last day of the season without being in first all year.
Dandy Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 Is Greg Maddux going down as the best fielding pitcher ever? If not, who is ahead of him? Jim Kaat? Did I leave my oven on?

I don't think so. The 2006 Minnesota Twins won the division on the last day of the season without being in first all year. Correct. The 2006 Twins were in first place only once, following the final game of the season. I give extra credit to the 1951 New York Giants, who NEVER led the league during the season. Is Greg Maddux going down as the best fielding pitcher ever? If not, who is ahead of him? Jim Kaat? Did I leave my oven on? Pitchers' fielding is such a difficult thing to judge. Could either of those pitchers have been better than Bucky Walters, who played third base as well in the Majors? Greg Maddux probably couldn't play third base. Better double check your oven, just in case.
Guest Smues Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 Did I leave my oven on? "And I forgot to turn the oven off."
Broward83 Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 With Biggio and Bagwell now gone, do you think the Astros will start to field a younger team, opting to give guys in their farm system chances to play, or will Drayton have to be removed as owner for that to happen?

They would have to make an active effort to remain that old. Ed Wade fielded some reasonably young teams, so I expect the Astros to go with youth. Especially with expectations currently low.
MFer Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 Have you read that Jayson Stark book yet? Thoughts?
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 Have you read that Jayson Stark book yet? Thoughts? I haven't, don't plan to. Over/underrated is really a nebulous concept. After all, who is doing the rating in the first place? And while Stark provides some useful tidbits in his writing, he's not such a talent that I rush to see his opinions on any certain player. Anyone who's read a Bill James piece by comparison knows that when he does a player comment, it's going to contain something interesting.
Cheech Tremendous Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 Jayson Stark has never really interested me as a writer or as an analyst, so I'd have a hard time settng aside time to devote to his book. I don't find him especially knowledgeable or insightful about the game. Furthermore, the concept of "rating" players and then supporting or debunking their accomplishments in this sense seems to be more in the interest of creating controversy than expanding the public's knowledge and understanding of the game.
CanadianChris Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 I enjoy reading certain Stark columns for more of the irrelevant stuff that goes on in the game, but I'd be skeptical of anything of substance written by him. Especially on something so subjective.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 He's of some use to me since he was a Phillies beat writer for a long time. If he wrote a book on the 1976-83 Phils, I'd read it.
Steve J. Rogers Posted November 17, 2007 Report Posted November 17, 2007 Okay, is the late Joe Nuxhall's 8 years from his one shot start as a war time gimmick in 1944 to his return in 1952 the longest anyone has gone between trips to the show with an active minor league career in between?
Brett Favre Posted November 19, 2007 Report Posted November 19, 2007 You still have that sim game used to do the All-Time Baseball Team tourney we were going to do? You should start a current players draft.

Brett Favre Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 Cool. I call dibs on the Yankees if we'd use real teams.

Before you do that you need to finish the last tourny you started on your blog.

I've racked my brain and the net for an answer and came up empty. I think some guys have him beat, but I can't find it.
mike546 Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 Didn't some pitcher on the Reds, I think it was last year, start a game after not pitching in the majors in like a really long time? I forgot his name.
Dandy Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 He hadn't EVER pitched in the majors and had been in the minors for a really long time. Tom Shearn.

mike546 Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 No not him. He was black or puerto rican or somthing I can't remember but I do remember he sucked ass and was released quickly. Honestly he might not have even been on the Reds it just somthing I remember slightly.
Steve J. Rogers Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 For some reason Jose Rijo's name is popping in my mind. Could have been one of those 81 A's whose arms got destroyed by Billy Martin?

Could have been one of those 81 A's whose arms got destroyed by Billy Martin? Rijo did come back after a six year absence, it was in 2001-02 and more than a cup of coffee.
mike546 Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 Jose Rijo's the guy I was thinking of.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 Cool. I call dibs on the Yankees if we'd use real teams. The idea has crossed my mind to do a draft based on players in a past year like 1980 or so. What would people think about this?
Brett Favre Posted November 22, 2007 Report Posted November 22, 2007 I'm up for it, although I'm not too familiar with that year.
CanadianChris Posted November 22, 2007 Report Posted November 22, 2007 Sometime in the mid-80s would be terrific. Maybe 1985 or 1986.
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted November 22, 2007 Report Posted November 22, 2007 Sometime in the mid-80s would be terrific. Maybe 1985 or 1986. Here's what a mid-80s talent group would look like, from the offensive side. http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/shareit/ekgR
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted November 22, 2007 Report Posted November 22, 2007 Is that good or bad? Good. I think there's a ton of great talent from that decade.
