Ripper 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2007 You mean Joe Smith. It would have been understandable for Joe Johnson. And the difference is that the Twolves sucked. If you take the Spurs first round picks for the next 3-4 years, it really isn't going to sting them. Just like losing a first rounder isn't going to hurt the Pats. At all. NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2007 I wonder how often coaches change up their signals, especially when playing division foes, because if we are to believe Bill that he wasn't using the videotape for THAT game, is it safe to say they were going to bring in the film and match together coaches signals for the next time they play the Jets? KingPK 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2007 Just like losing a first rounder isn't going to hurt the Pats. At all. Sure because Richard Seymour, Ben Watson, Logan Mankins, Ty Warren and Vince Wilfork all appeared from some sort of time portal. Anyone that says this isn't going to hurt is kidding themselves. Cartman 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2007 It will hurt, but not as much as it would if they had not aquired the 49'ers 1st rounder...Which they basically got for nothing.
Ripper 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2007 And the 29th pick in the draft will cure all that. Please, the Pats will pick up some free agent that will play better and for less money than any player they would draft at that spot. This truely is a slap on the wrist. It REALLY is when you think about Wade Wilson getting suspended 5 games for using HGH in his own personal life and it in no way effects the game of football. MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2007 I think they should have had to forfeit the win vs the Jets..possibly not making the playoffs by 1 game because of this would have more consequence than losing 1 of their draft picks considering they still have a first rounder from SF. And I can hardly wait for the Ravens/Jets matchup..possibly a battle of the backup QBS!

He claimed to have HGH for his diabetes and impotence, correct? Why wouldn't he treat his diabetes and impotence with some of the myriad medications that aren't banned by the NFL? That would probably be more effective, and wouldn't raise any suspicion.

HarleyQuinn 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2007 I'm curious to see if... A: Brady Quinn sees any playing time, even as early as midway through the 3rd quarter (if not earlier since they traded Frye and have 2 QBs on their roster unless Joshua Cribbs is the emergency #3?) B: Eli threw on the side today I believe. He'll probably be the backup but I want to see how Jared Lorenzen does after enjoying some of his performances in college. No. It's Derek Anderson, Ken Dorsey (who they re-signed after trading Frye) and then Quinn. Yes you heard that correctly, Quinn is STILL #3 on the depth chart. This is not to say Quinn won't see time, since Crennel said himself that he might if the situation called for it.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted September 14, 2007 The situation being coming in as the emergency quarterback after everyone goes down. It takes time to learn a complicated pro offense, I don't care what kind of system Weis ran at Notre Dame. I also really want to see J-Load play. A 300 pound quarterback sounds like a lot a fun to watch, but probably not to sack.

I would have thought you'd have taken the hint the first time you posted this and we all ignored it. The forfeiting the loss in the instance might have been harsh, but the penalty doled out by the NFL is the equivalent of a slap on the wrist. If Goodell's trying to toughen up his stance on the image of the league, he should nip this in the bud now and send the message that cheating IN ANY WAY isn't tolerated, because apparently is ok to cheat if you're a head coach. Belichick should have been suspended, but I knew that wouldn't happen for various reasons, the least of which being its not the Buffalo Bills or Carolina Panthers involved in the scandal, even though this isn't even the first time that the Patriots have been alledged of taping from the sidelines and other "strange occurances" during games. Someone will find a more covert way of video taping and they aren't gonna care cause its just a freaking draft pick and a fine as punishment. With 1 game being the possible difference between making the playoffs and getting fired, its probably not that tough a choice, and in fact I figure now that the penalty for such a violation has been established and in precedent, It might be an even easier choice. USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2007 If it was me, this might be harsh, but I'd have taken away all their picks for the 2008 draft and suspended the coaching staff 4 games. But that's obviously overkill.
Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2007 It is overkill. Draft picks are the most valuable commodity that an NFL team working under a salary cap has. Taking away a first round pick is removing a player that could contribute positively for 4 or 5 years at a reasonable salary. That's a harsh punishment, and it's going to hurt the Patriots more than say, suspending Belichick. That $500,000 fine is nothing to sneeze at either. Those are after tax dollars for the coach, essentially making it a $1 million fine, a huge chunk of his annual salary. And before anyone says that the organization will pay it for him, there are strict rules in place (supposedly) to keep teams from doing that.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2007 That's excessive. I'd be in favour of suspending Belichick four games, but you can't suspend the entire coaching staff. And there's absolutely no precedent to vacate a victory for cheating. If you go down that road, you may as well vacate any team's victories when they have a player suspended for steroids. I would say suspend Belichick for four games, making sure to ban him from any and all contact with the team during that period, and take away both first-round picks, and maybe a second. Fining people has absolutely no impact.
USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2007 I understand that, the problem with this is it means the Patriots gets ONE mid 1st round pick to play with instead of one mid 1st round pick and one late 1st round pick instead. How is that really punishment? Because instead of grabbing a DE and a FS, they can only grab the DE? (addressed to cheech13)

I have a hard time believing the Patriots are going to be hurt by losing a first round draft pick considering they had 2 and it wouldn't have been cheap to sign 2 first round picks. They probably would have traded one of them in a draft day deal or something. And the Patriots have drafted wisely enough over the last few years that they probably can draft a similar player in a later round anyway for better value. They aren't going to miss a measly draft pick. And I dont know how much Belichick makes, but its ashame he isn't in the Coaches Union who probably could fight to hammer that fine down for him, at least he will have to pay the whole fine. The Robfather 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2007 If anything, I think the punishment wasn't harsh enough. Bill should of been suspended for 3 games, fined a third of his salary, the video guy should of been banned from all NFL games, and the team should of lost multiple draft picks over two years span. Do you not realize that even if they have been using videos of opponents defensive signals all along it would only possibly benefit them in the second half of any game? There is no way in hell they could get that video footage to the rest of the coaching staff and decipher everything that quickly to be used right as they film it.
