NHL Sept/Oct 2007

I can't believe that little rat Briere is making me like him. He is playing like Forsberg in those two or three weeks that he was healthy as a Flyer. The first unit PP with Richards and Timmonen on the point has been incredible so far.

It was good to see (well, hear) Toews (rhymes with Dave's) notch his first NHL goal tonight, but it seems like the biggest impediment for the Blackhawks is that they play a physical game without the necessary discipline, and thus spend way too many minutes per game killing stupid hooking penalties. Granted, they seem to have a pretty good penalty kill, but it's disheartening that they can never really get off the ground because they're seemingly always shorthanded. Both losses have been low-scoring one-goal losses, so Khabibulin and the defense are keeping it close, it's just a matter of more scoring opportunities arising. I don't expect them to score a lot, really, just enough to get by. I still have a pretty good feeling about this team, the same feeling I had in 2004-2005 when the Bulls returned to respectability. It's the beginning of what's probably a long road ahead.

Price played an outstanding game last night. He looked really sharp in the first period and you really couldn't blame him for either of the goals the Pens scored on him. Wonder if the fickle fans in Montreal will soon turn on Huet and start chanting for Price when Huet is playing

I was telling everyone alive that Montreal was going to win last night. Not so much because of Price, but given the omen that some Roy guy started his first game 22 years ago to the day, also against the Pens.

And as CC started on, he was indeed not the only goalie to win his debut last night. Brian Elliot was also a winner for the Sens.

Ottawa's about to get handed their first loss by the Hurricanes. Gerber has looked quite shaky, and all three goals have come on big rebounds. That's the danger with Gerber when the defencemen have an off night.

Ray Emery is going to Binghamton for a rehab stint this weekend. He'll play two games and will likely return to Ottawa next week. With Elliott looking as good as he has in his limited play, I'm not as concerned with the goaltending situation once the inevitable Gerber trade goes through later this season (I hope).

There's a chance the Hurricanes aren't even in the Finals that year if he doesn't come off the bench against Buffalo and shut them out. Also, he was awesome in the Olympics against Canada.

And the Leafs should get beaten 7-1 more often!

I'm telling you this at the risk of becoming Hockey Marvin, but Bob Pulford was promoted out of hockey operations and is now the "Vice President of the Wirtz Corporation," which I take to mean "he sits in an office on Michigan Avenue and just drinks scotch all day." Anyway, this is an important sign of things to come, because Pulford had been Bill's flunky for years, and removing him from running the Blackhawks is a sign that there really is a change of the guard after all. I don't know that Dale Tallon is all that competent on his own, but removing the meddling idiot may improve Tallon's ability to run the organization.

On the heels of the Downie suspension, the Flyers' Jesse Boulerice got 25 games for cross-checking Ryan Kesler in the face. That's the longest suspension in league history.

I think we're going to see at least one more longest suspension in league history before the end of this season.

I completely agree with what the league is trying to do here. There have been too many dirty, cheap shots to the head that is starting to get ridiculous.

I wouldn't be shocked if that is it for Boulerice. I would be surprised if they can hold a roster spot for him with trying to whittle down Downie's games, having to bring back Upshall before long, and the fact he really isn't good enough (at playing or fighting) to deserve it. And would any team really want a 29 year old FA mediocre fighter that would be a dead roster spot for two months.

Came back from two goals down to beat the Red Wings in Detroit. Haha, this is fun.

The Chicago announcers were pointing out that the game wasn't a sellout, which is unusual for Detroit. What's going on that you guys can't fill up the Joe for Wings-Hawks?

That's why. Ticket prices are really high.

If the Kings don't compete against Boston tonight, I'm done for a few weeks. I can't take more of this bullshit.

QFT. You can only get a Sabres ticket for under $100 if you're in the second section and it's a "Bronze level" game (read: Someone who sucks); for comparison, I can get better Bills tickets for that price and last summer I picked up 2 seats for RAW (which hasn't been back since, coincidentally) in the fourth row on the floor for $60.

I don't know what to think right now. We competed, but fuck. Our defense looks like that of a fucking junior squad.

Damn that is really good, of course it's teams like the Panthers but if you're a person who doesn't care who your team is playing it's an amazing deal. Here, had I known I would have gotten a 1 ticket miniplan for about the same price I paid for my 4 pairs I bought from a friend who has two pairs of season tix (they did buy 2 get 2 free this season) and the 1 single I bought for the game against the Wings in January and all of them are in the upper level, which isn't a horrible view though IMO.

So when is Claude Julian getting fired?

?

Why would he? Or is this some of that sarcasm that doesn't work over the internet.
