Let's start talking Best Album of 2007.

Recommended Posts

I don't think people wrote off Jay-Z just because Kingdom Come was underwhelming, but because until last month he hadn't done a single really worthwhile thing since the "Diamonds" remix. I'd say that after three (long) years of let downs and disappointments people were justified in thinking he'd fallen off for good.

If Jay-Z is rapping about things other than himself, that's a step in the right direction.

Jay-Z is bigger than this. He doesn't leak singles to the street; he launches them on Budweiser commercials during the World Series. He doesn't blog on Myspace; he flogs for Hewlett-Packard. He doesn't beg for time at MTV; he owns the billboards above it. To most of the world, he's not just a rapper, he is the rapper. When he calls himself the "Mike Jordan of recordin'," he's not talking about being the greatest player the game has ever known, he's talking about being the game itself.

I just felt so bad for the guy who wrote that.

Updated list of crap I heard:

A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Scribble Mural Comic Journal

Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha

Andrew Pekler - Cue

Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam

Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

Band of Horses - Cease to Begin

Beirut - The Flying Club Cup

Blind Cave Salamander

Blues Control - Puff

Bruce Springsteen - Magic

Celebration - The Modern Tribe

Dan Wilson - Free Life

Devendra Banhart - Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon

Feist - The Reminder

Fiery Furnaces - Widow City

Frog Eyes - Tears of the Valedictorian

Immaculate Machine - Fables

Interpol - Our Love To Admire

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver

Muscles - Guns Babes Lemonade

The National - Boxer

Nellie McKay - Obligatory Villagers

New Pornographers - Challengers

The Postmarks

Radiohead - In Rainbows

Shocking Pinks

Six Organs of Admittance - Shelter from the Ash

Son Volt - The Search

Sondre Lerche - Phantom Punch

Stars - In Our Bedroom After the War

Stars of the Lid - and Their Refinement of the Decline

Sunburned Hand of the Man - Fire Escape

The Go! Team - Proof of Youth

Vive La Fete - Jour de Chance

Weakerthans - Reunion Tour

White Rainbow - Prism Of Eternal Now

Wilco - Sky Blue Sky

Windmill - Puddle City Racing Lights

Witchcraft - The Alchemist

Wolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters

Favorites in boldface. The Stars album has become a real favorite of mine. The National didn't grab me like I thought it would. With my recent electronic music kick, I've loved the ambient stuff from this year, but I can't in good faith put a purely ambient album as best of the year, y'know?

What did you think of this? I like it quite a bit, but it's not something I feel the urge to listen to very often. That might change with the weather though, since it seems like it'd be perfect walking-around-in-the-snow music.

Totally in agreement. It's very much a weather-contingent headphone album, but the weather hasn't been right yet.

I sound like I'm really hyping it. It hasn't been right...TILL NOW.

Byron, are you a hearty midwesterner, too? If you're from the Twin Cities, you can hang out with Piss!

Finally gave In Rainbows a full listen-through. I had to give them the justice of the $200 headphones too. It's definitely one of my all-time favorites now, even though it feels a tad short.

funny guy...

What's so funny? It had awesome production and great concept songs. It was a pretty weak year for Hip Hop, and this was a great album.

I feel like I'm the only one who's not in love with the new Stars album. I didn't like it nearly as much as the past two.

I think I need to listen to it again.

the new devendra album made me like devendra. i didnt like him before. now i do.

I agree with this. I found his self conscious quirkiness to be contrived and offputting before, but it's almost nonexistant on this album. Sweet. It's probably in my top ten at least.

Another one I forgot is We Are Him by the Angels of Light. Black River Song is the best opening track of the year.

After giving it a listen, I have to add "We Are Him" by Angels of Light to the list somewhere. Also new to my list is Dormant's "Beneath the Mighty Oak"
