We let an overrated player with marginal defense, no bat and a bad attitude go to a team that paid him entirely too much money.

I've never been much of a Lowell guy, so re-signing him wasn't that high on my wish list for Boston this offseason. But I've been really wrong on him in the past, so I'll go with this. Even if he starts declining, the commitment is short enough that it won't cause any problems. With the exception of the inevitable Coco Crisp trade or an Eric Gagne replacement, Boston's offseason appears to be done.

I guess if you're gonna replace one power righty with a history of health problems for another then Kerry Wood is the way to go. Now I'll just wait for the inevidable Czech joke about how they shouldn't kick those tires too hard because they'll pop or something.

vivalaultra Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 Ah, Hell. Apparently my hometown 'Stros got duped by one Kazuo Matsui. They're reportedly 'on the verge' of signing him. That's just terrible. Take away Matsui's numbers at Coors last year, and he was basically the same player as Chris Burke in a few more ABs. I fail to see how this an upgrade, and I don't think there's such a large Japanese community in Houston that that's a market that really needs to be opened. Matsui might be fast, but if he's only getting on base at a .325 career clip, what's the point?

But you don't move a player like that in the first deal that comes along. He and Martinez are the only positional prospects worth a damn in the entire Mets system. On a team with a lot of bad contracts they are going to need good, pre-arb talent to fill out the squad in coming years.

I can't think of a single bad contract they have after this season. You are right. For some reason, I was thinking that the team had a lot of money wrapped up in a few aging players. I guess that's not the case. But I guess my point still stands. If they are going to have to replace multiple positions in the next few years through free agency, it might be worthwhile to hang on to the few legitimate prospects that they have to keep the payroll from spiraling out of control.

"We've adhered to the commissioner's slot recommendations," Minaya said. "We've been good citizens. But not all the teams have done that, and the competitive balance is not fair. We have to take that position under review as an organization." It's not quite collusion. Still, "we passed on good players because the commissioner told us to" is deplorable. Good teams have slaughtered themselves in the draft to save a few pennies.
