2008: The Year in Music

Recommended Posts

In his niche though(where its not ALL about what the lyrics are saying like say a Lupe, Andre 3k, Common type of stuff) where its all about the wordplay and the things you are doing with the words+flow= hot, Wayne is really one of the best right now.

I don't know how you can say this and at the same time say that Cam'ron is "fucking trash." In terms of pure flow/word-play Cam's best stuff absolutely slays just about everything Wayne's ever done.

Also, Purple Haze is everything that Tha Carter III desperately wants to be (and I say this as someone who likes Wayne)

Camron makes up words so that they will rhyme with others. He rhymes the same word with the same word. His flow is garbage. His wordplay is horrible. Camron sucks. he has sucked for almost a decade now. He is really really horrible.

If it's any consolation, Ripper, I think almost everything from Common post-Be has been trite bullshit that has tried too hard to be conscious rap. I'm a little irritated that he's automatically the first conscious rapper almost anyone reels off when trying to name such emcees, since I think he's really fallen off. The first single off his next album is horrible, too, so I don't have high hopes for him to turn it around.

As for Mos, shit. People still consider him a rapper? Guy dropped a classic album almost a DECADE ago. The New Danger was hokey experimental shit that was neither innovative nor up to par with almost anything done in the rap-rock genre. His last album was almost as bad and felt like it was coming from a guy whose interests were elsewhere. I can acknowledge Black on Both Sides for the classic it is, but it's clear the dude's not interested in rapping and fancies himself more of a crooner or actor.

Also, I don't get the Cam'ron hate around here. Maybe I do, but I'm sorta with P.G.O.A.T. here. I can't compare Purple Haze and C3 yet since I haven't listened much to the latter. But Cam's cut from the same cloth as Wayne. Clever wordplay and a lot of lyrical content that holds virtually no substance. I can see why people don't like him and think he got real lazy after the label move in the early 2000s, but he's a case of a guy whose charisma and swagger allow him to spit some real corny/nonsensical stuff and get away with it.

I think the only reason people try to cling to Wayne not being that good is the fact that he is a overconfident prick that likes to mention that he is better than everyone else. I don't think he is doing it nearly as well as Royce.

In his niche though(where its not ALL about what the lyrics are saying like say a Lupe, Andre 3k, Common type of stuff) where its all about the wordplay and the things you are doing with the words+flow= hot, Wayne is really one of the best right now.

Amoung Punchline/wordplay rappers, he has a right to talk about how good he is, because damn

I think we are different though. I am fine with mixtape rap because its usually better than the mainstream stuff. they are all about making the words flow while the mainstream stuff is more about making you dance. I appreciate that.

Yes. this and his breath control, cadance, the way he switches his entire flow constantly, just the way he has a new flow for every song, at least. Sometimes he has a new flow 15 times durring the same song.

It's not what you say, but how you say it in hip hop. Plus, Wayne is on his tour bus pretty much year round, makin' new shit on his bus in a studiio he had specialy made. His codeine induced rammblings and makin like, 100 songs a day is similar to Tupac bein a spliff smokin' alchoholic that basically lived in the studio, turning out 100 tracks a day.

I ain't tryin' to dickride. I ain't sayin' he's perfect. I ain't tryin' to convince somebody they should dickride him. "I brain storm call me flood head", is the dumbest shit I've heard in a minute. He spits a wack ass line hear and there and rambles, but if you really listen, you can match shit up untill you see what he was sayin'. His shit is like freestyle poetry. He just goes in and spits.

Kinda like how Cam'ron does, except Wayne's shit makes sopme sort of sense about 80% of the time, while Cam'ron makes sense about 10%. If that. Anything good he ever spit was ghost written by Mase, Big L, Biggie, Jada, Jay-Z, Juelz, etc.

He may have had a hand in the shit, but those dudes made him ill. He got a decent little movement goin with the whole Dipset thing. Then everybody realised he sucked and the other dudes on his crue were out shanning him constantly, and the newest Dipset material has been theyir best to date without Cam.

Dude is a clown. His shits alright if you're smokin' out or at a party or somethin', but I can't sit and listen to a Cam'ron album all the way through. None of them.

I probably have about 10 to 12 solo Cam songs that I can listen to on a semi-consistant basis.

I don't wanna get into some E-beef over fucking Cam'ron and Lil Wayne, but if ya'll wanna talk hi-hop, I'll go all day. That's my favorite thing in the world.

Peace nikkas.

Back to that Coldplay song, it actually would've made a pretty good late-phase U2 song, with the resigned and self-doubting lyrics, if Bono could ever deign to admit that he hasn't made a great album in seventeen years. Even the whoa-oh-ohs are The Edge-y. I thought it was U2 the first time I heard the commercial in another room without seeing Chris Martin's silhouette.

dl_artwork.jpg

Awful cover, though. Something you'd expect from The Killers or Live.

Man that shit really does look like a Live cover. That's terrible, fucking wack. The song has grown on me though.

I'm a Coldplay fan for the most part.

Edit: Just to give props to Don't Just sit There for his edit.

The new Spiritualized album is pretty good.

People told me it was pretty bad. I like but don't love Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, so I'll hear it soon, probably.

I was talking about the style of rap, not that common is putting out good stuff. And Mos, unlike, say Andre 3k, still raps. And pretty good stuff too. Not as good as it used to be and he is mostly a singer now, but the stuff is qualtity when he does decide to rap. But once again, I meant more of the niche rap wise moreso than the putting out better material. Although I do have to disagree with one thing....Tru Magic was fucking awesome.

Waynes word play makes sense. Cam tries to do what Wayne is doing well.

Waynes most drug induced bullshit doesn't come close to "Eight, boom, boom, my ace boon coon

Shake, bake, skate, vroom, vroom"

Camron is a male version of Missy Elliot but because he has charisma no one noticed.

I usually use quotes from that song when I'm talking to somebody about Cam'ron. After I break it down for them, they realise how retarded the shit sounds. When Cam'ron tries, like really tries, he's a good rapper. But he'll never be an emcee.

Plus, dude was dressed up like Shaq in 'Steel' on his first album cover.

I dig a lot of the old Children of the Corn shit. And he was, what? Fourth best in that crew?

Cam is a damn good Entertainer, though. But; he's not, and can't logically be, in contention to even be considered as the best doin' it right now.

The new album form The Orb is a letdown.

Also, am I the only guy who thinks the Fleet Foxes are just ok? I mean, they aren't bad, but they aren't worth the cock-gobbling they are getting.

Tha Carter III is a greatly produced album. Wayne brings the cute wordplay, but the album's production is really where its staying power is. I give credit to Wayne for not getting too sappy with most of the slow jam tracks on the album. "Comfortable" is excellent and a reminder that Babyface is in fact, still alive. "Lollipop" is still one of the worst songs of the year, but unfortunately, probably a big selling point with many of the people who are snapping the CD off the racks this week.

After a few listens, I'm ready to go on the record as saying Nas' "The Nigger Tape" > C3. Nice production, but this is one of the more cohesive albums I've heard in years and it's not even an album proper. With that said, I'm toying with the idea of buying C3 at Best Buy for a dime before the end of the weekend since I've come around on a lot of it. Though I'm still not ready to dub it a classic or anything like that.

I don't have much to add other than to say that Carter III is great. Not a perfect album, but I liked it a lot. I've just always enjoyed Wayne's work, even if it does get too crazy sometimes.

The Cool Kids' The Bake Sale EP is the most purely enjoyable thing I've come across this year. It's not the "best" record I've heard in '08 (that title probably belongs to Fuck Buttons' Street Horrsing) but it could very well end up being the one I come back to most often in years to come.

So we're halfway through the year, what are everyone's favorite albums so far?

I dunno. I'm not really excited by this year's offerings. I'm not ready to heap AOTY praise on Portishead or M83. Tindersticks had a good outing. I didn't like Trouble in Dreams, Black Mountain's In the Future is good but I can't call it a favorite, the s/t from Our Sleepless Forest was some pretty good ambient but I don't think I've properly appreciated it yet. s/t from This Will Destroy You is just every guitar-oriented post-rock album you've ever heard. Distortion has "California Girls" and little else, not to mention an obnoxious lo-fi gimmick. Why Can't We Be Like Us? is too rhythmic and not textured enough, which is how I prefer my electronic. I'm sticking with Heretic Pride, followed by the pair of Quinn Walker albums.

Instead, let's talk favorite songs. I can find lots of songs I really like, if not cohesive albums.

Quinn Walker - "Save Your Love For Me"

M83 - "Up!"

M83 - "We Own the Sky"

Mountain Goats - "Michael Myers Resplendent"

Mountain Goats - "Sept. 15th, 1983"

Magnetic Fields - "California Girls"

Destroyer - "The State"

Tindersticks - "Yesterday Tomorrows"

These are songs I like.
