Matches that shouldn't have been on PPV

Recommended Posts

Norman Smiley Vs Prince Iaukea from Starrcade '98

Brian Adams and Scott Norton Vs Fit Finlay and Jerry Flynn from the same show

The Wall Vs The Demon in a "Special Main Event" from SuperBrawl X

Hammer Vs Mikey Whipwreck from The Great American Bash '99

The entirety of Heroes of Wrestling

Interestingly almost all of these are WCW though I'm sure given time, I could think of plenty from WWE/F and ECW.

Shit, I read the title of the thread wrong.

Well, for pay per view matches, I gotta go with:

Jamie Noble vs. Nidia.

From the 2004 Great American Bash:

Mordecai vs. Hardcore Holly

Kenzo Suzuki vs. Billy Gunn

Charlie Haas vs. Luther Reigns

It was like, "Hey, let's give Velocity a pay-per-view!"

From December to Dismember:

Matt Striker vs. Balls Mahoney

Tommy Dreamer vs. Daivari

FBI vs. Sylvester Terkay and Elijah Burke

Kevin Thorn and Ariel vs. Mike Knox and Kelly Kelly

HOW DARE YOU SPEAK ILL OF THE JUNKYARD INVITATIONAL?

Yeah- WCW went through the longest stretch of shitty PPVs and it was in the era of monthly PPVs (Slamboree '99 to Fall Brawl '00). I think they went a good year and a half without a PPV that was better than mediocre.

Lashley vs. Vince/Shane/Umaga at Backlash and Judgment Day the same year.

Wow, and they're both Lashley matches.

Survivor Series 2007: Khali vs. Hornswoggle.

I'm largely including matches that didn't have angles or just seem really purposeless.

WrestleMania 10 - Earthquake vs. Adam Bomb (0:32)

WrestleMania 12 - Triple H vs. Ultimate Warrior (1:36)

In Your House 01 - Mabel vs. Adam Bomb (1:53)

In Your House 03 - Savio Vega vs. Waylon Mercy (7:06)

In Your House 05 - Ahmed Johnson vs. Buddy Landell (0:42)

In Your House 10 - Jose Lothario vs. Jim Cornette (0:57)

In Your House 18 - Max Mini/Nova vs. Tarantula/Mosaic (6:43)

And the WWF wondered why they were so awful in 1994/1995?

Thought of another one

Marc Mero Vs Leif Cassidy from In Your House: Final Four

And for that matter, The Nation of Domination Vs Goldust, Flash Funk, and Bart Gunn (Talk about an odd trio) from the same PPV.

WrestleMania 12 - Triple H vs. Ultimate Warrior (1:36)

Warrior's return shouldn't have been on PPV? For a lot of people, just his showing up was an automatic buy.

For me, pretty much any of the pointless diva stuff where they're fighting over hairspray and stupid stuff like that. Everything else I'm fine with.

WWF went through a stretch where they seemed hellbent on getting almost the entire roster onto its show. I'm thinking along the lines of Wrestlemania V through Mania VII. These three Wrestlemanias were probably the biggest offenders, with gems such as Koko B. Ware vs. Rick Martel, Texas Tornado vs. Dino Bravo, Bad News Brown vs. Jim Duggan, etc.

Oh come on that match rules. I could watch that match on a loop for the entire length of a PPV and be entertained.

Hell, WrestleMania I through VIII seemed to do that. But most of the matches were somewhat short so I don't have too much against them.

Off the top of my head I can think of;

WrestleMania I

Tito Santana Vs The Executioner

David Sammartino Vs Brutus Beefcake

WrestleMania II

The Fabulous Moolah Vs Velvet McIntyire

Uncle Elmer Vs Adrian Adonis

WrestleMania III

Butch Reed Vs Koko B.Ware

WrestleMania IV

Hmmm...even though this is the worst out of the "old school" era Wrestlemanias, every match seemed to serve some kind of a purpose even if the purpose was "Let's just throw every guy who doesn't have a feud into a battle royal"

WrestleMania V

The aforementioned Hacksaw Vs Bad News Brown match

Brutus Beefcake Vs Ted DiBiase

WrestleMania VI

Koko Vs Rick Martel

WrestleMania VII

Kerry Von Erich Vs Dino Bravo

Tenyru and uh...the other guy Vs Demolition

WrestleMania VIII

Owen Hart Vs Skinner

It was the company making sure as many people as possible were able to get a Wrestlemania pay-day, which was typically the biggest one of the year.

I have to be the only one on this board who considers WM IV a personal favorite. But it was right when I started watching wrestling, so I remember all of the build for the show even if I watched Clash of the Champions instead that day (my parents wouldn't spring for PPVs).

Wow, I didn't even know Justin Credible was in TNA (Assuming he was PJ Polaco). Doesn't surprise me. The dude has wrestled for pretty much every semi- major promotion in the past fifteen years outside of Smokey Mountain and WCW.

Despite saying it was the worst of the old school WrestleManias, I don't really hate WrestleMania IV. I definitely hold some nostalgia for it as it was the first wrestling tape I "owned". I won Part 1 of the VHS as part of some cheapass raffle at a campground I used to stay at. Oddly enough, I didn't see Part 2 until about two years ago. It's not a terrible show (I'd definitely rank it ahead of IX, XI, XI, XIII and XV) but it's a chore to sit through in one sitting. Steamboat/Valentine, the Tag Team title match and the tourney final are all ***-***1/2 matches. And I'm a battle royal mark so the opener was a lot of fun for me.

Scotty Riggs vs Mikey Whipwreck from Spring Stampede '99 complete with boring chants.

Naked Mideon vs William Regal for the Euro title at No Mercy 2000.

Jimmy Hart vs that fucking annoying radio host guy from SEVERAL WCW PPVs in 2000.

No, I'm another one. IV was the first old-school Wrestlemania I saw on video, so I have a soft spot for it. Plus I'm a mark for tournaments. Plus it was the only Mania which didn't have goddamn Hogan in the main event.

Yes, he had a couple of brief runs. The Polaco thing was in, what, 2005? He also had a run sometime around 2003 with a mini-feud against Jerry Lynn. I fondly remember one time they were shooting a backstage fight between the two, and Justin thought that security was being too aggressive in their pulling-apart, and started screaming "Let go of me! It's fucking fake!"

Damn near every WCW ppv from their beginning to the bitter end had at least one match on there that absolutely nobody wanted to see.

WM IV was the first Mania I ever saw and the second wrestling video I ever rented. One of my fondest recurring childhood memories is renting the two-VHS set of the event at the video rental place down the street. I've seen the event so many times and had such a strong positive bias against it that I was shocked to see how hated it was when I got the 'net back in 2000.

Mancow.

2000 WCW had too many celebrities between him, Arquette, and Gary Coleman.

And KISS, and Beetlejuice, and the ICP, and Courtney Cox, and probably several others I'm forgetting, and that was just in 2000.

Of course, this is the company which brought us Jay Leno: Main Event Wrestler... and his match was BETTER than the abortions featuring Dennis Rodman. Hey, there's a great candidate: Rodman/Hogan vs. Malone/DDP. I want that forty minutes of my life back. A long WCW tradition, going back to Robocop running in on the Horsemen.

That James Brown thing was baffling as his appearence was the blowoff for a feud that no one cared about between The Cat and The Maestro. The two never even wrestled, they just argued about whether The Cat really knew James Brown.

That's WCW for ya.

What made it even better was the WCW paid all that money for JB to show up and didn't even publicize to other news outlets that he was going to be there.
