Survivor Series 1998

I'm just watching the ME of the tourni, and Lawler says

"You'll get to see ALL of this pay-per-view"

And JR replies:

"That's not fair King, making fun of those less fortunate".

Did WCW have a PPV go wrong about this time, or something?

I think Halloween Havoc '98 cut out during the Goldberg-DDP match. That's why they replayed the match on Nitro for free.

That was a PPV that outraged me at the time, since I had people over who were all interested in seeing that Hogan/Warrior rematch (nostalgia for the first match mostly). Then the time ran out during that match and it cut out for 5 minutes or so, we missed the entire goofy finish with the fireball and everything. It did come back on for DDP/Goldberg.

The maddening thing is Havoc 98 has so much useless shit on it that could have been cut out to make it a trim 170m or so. Nitro Girls dancing three times, jobber crap, etc.

Bingo. WCW planned on going 3 1/2 hours but didn't bother to tell any of the cable companies. Their theory was that it would just spill over into the replay that was supposed to be shown directly after the live airing (wouldn't this mean that the later showing would end with an hour left??????). Well, at 11:00 PM ET, around the time that Warrior-Hogan II finished, about one-third or so of the paying audience was left staring at the TV with no DDP-Goldberg in sight.

Their solution (so that they wouldn't have to bite the bullet and offer refunds) was to air the match in its entirety the next evening, which must have been even more infuriating if you were one of the paying customers.

That company was just chock full of fuck-ups.

I have the WB Home Video version of Halloween Havoc 98 and they trimmed out a couple of lower-card matches to make it fit down to 3 hours. But I think they actually left in all of the Nitro Girls dancing...

I miss the Nitro Girls. Anyone know whatever happened to Spice?

Melissa Anne Bellin, the former Nitro Girl Spice, is now working a chiropractor. That's probably the hottest thing I have ever typed.

Also, she (among others) did a shoot interview at some convention a while ago which was never released (as far as I know).

Still looks hot as all hell.

That is Nitro-era pic (damn, those baggy jeans still do it for me), but I'm confident that she is just as hot as she was (if not hotter than she was) back then.

Didn't a few of them form a vocal group for a while?

Yep, they have a song on the terrible WCW Mayhem CD. "Bailendo". I don't know why I remember the song name but I'll have that song stuck in my head. I don't even know what the hell it means...

Yes, they did. I counted, and they danced five times.

I'm usually not one for conspiracy theories, but consider this. Halloween Havoc was the first WCW ppv ever to have a high-profile Hulk Hogan match which wasn't the main event. (He'd occasionally been in some tag matches which were second or third from the top, which always ended with him getting the pinfall victory.) Even after Goldberg won the belt, he was still doing jack shit in the undercard or not wrestling at all, while Hogan And Friends invariably got the main event. Here comes Halloween Havoc, the first show with a big important Hogan match which wasn't going on last. Also, it was the first show in which the main event (Goldberg/DDP) didn't include a former WWF star. And hey, look what happened, WCW "accidentally" ran out of time so that the show cut off after Hogan/Warrior.

Coincedence? Maybe. But it's a hell of a coincedence.

Here in the UK we didn't get any WCW PPVs, so that Goldberg/DDP match from Havoc being shown on Nitro was a surprise. I remember watching it.

On a related note, they did release some of the 1999/2000 PPVs over here on video towards the end of WCW.

I've always assumed WCW went long on purpose, what with all the useless filler. What I don't know is if they indeed knew they'd get cut off and planned to air the main event on Nitro ahead of time or not. IIRC that Nitro was the last on that beat Raw in the Ratings head to head.

In the Death of WCW book it said that WCW did in fact intentionally want to go 3 1/2 hours but, get this, they never actually informed the cable companies beforehand. I don't think it was anything they were doing out of malice or a conspiracy, they were just morons.

Awesome. I watched this at my 'nilla Tada-Head's house. We had an illegal feed, so we got to watch the whole show live.

So, I remember being all 'what the fuck?' the next night, when they showed the match on Nitro. People who paid for it were all pissy at school on Tuesday. Good times.
