Guest Teal-y Dan Report post Posted April 16, 2008 I'll run down what I can. Mike North's schtick is that he's a typical Chicago meatball, who went from selling hot dogs to hosting a talk show. Ignorant, racist, old attention whore. He's the kind of guy that hangs out at steakhouses and refers to the waitresses as "sweetie" or "the talent." I'm told that he was better when he had co-hosts. You may remember him as "the guy that Ozzie Guillen told to shut the fuck up." Mike Mulligan and Brian Hanley are sportswriters from the Chicago Sun-Times, and they're likable and bright, but they're on during mid-mornings and I don't really have a chance to hear their show, which is a little dry and sports-heavy. Mike Murphy is a big Cubs fan, and I like his show, but his voice is grating. Terry Boers and Dan Bernstein are the best guys on the station because they're funny and don't always talk sports, but they're prone to phoning it in and running with "if you don't agree with us, you're an idiot" sometimes. The rest of their fill-in crew is okay, but mostly serve to crank out malaprops for Boers & Bernstein drops. Tom Waddle & Mark Silverman are okay, but I haven't heard much of them. I liked Tom Waddle at WGN, though. Mac/Jurko/Harry is too loud, fat, and obnoxious for me, and I rarely listen because one of them is always suspended, anyway. The best sports talk in the city is actually Dave Kaplan over at WGN, because he actually runs an intelligent show without the usual Angry Loud Sports Talk conceits, because he's on what's probably the best radio station in the country. The only fault I can find is that there's too much discussion of Northwestern basketball, as in maybe five or ten minutes per season.
Vampiro69 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2008 KFAN AM 1130 out of Minneapolis is pretty decent. Sometimes they focus on local politics when the sports scene is dull. In the morning (9-12) they have Paul Allen (Vikings play-by-play) and he is pretty good. Noon-2pm is The Common Man Dan Cole, who makes fun of Minnesota's press being a bunch of Homers. His best moment was when he predicted the exact count, batter, time, and inning that Radke would give up a home run earlier that game. Chad Hartman the T-Wolves PBP guy is 2-4:30. Personally I think he is horrible. Dan Berriero is during rush hour and is a solid program, but I never get a chance to listen to it. Common Man's page If you scroll down to Misc. Audio click and listen to the "Sports, Sports, Sports" meltdown. One of my favorite moments from the show.
JohnnyBlaze 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2008 wow...lots of responses...definitely gonna check out kellerman, and I too agree that tirico is probably better than DP...I actually dig when Van Pelt is on the show, although that may have more to do with terp bloodlines than anything else. Not a local sports radio guy (i'm a NJ transplant) plus czaban drives me batty at times.
Bigelow34 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2008 I don't listen to the nighttime show (Planet Mikey) enough to form an opinion. You're not missing anything. Seconded. It is a mess. D&C suck too. Dale & Holley are the best on that station. The best part of the Big Show is the whiner line, and like you said the show really goes based on the hosts. I miss 790 the Score here in RI as they had some decent stuff from time to time. Kellerman is great.

Best in my opinon is "The Show" JD, Hood, and Delfaco, they're knowledgeble and entertaining to listen especially Hood. Boers & Bernstein are good too, but sometimes they can be assholes towards their own listeners. "Waddle & Silvy" are ok. Silvy sometimes can be annoying especially with his Cubs "Homering." fairtoflair7 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2008 WFAN.com always something on, a little-NY biased but Mike and Dog are the best in the business for the most-part and you can't get much better in depth then the NY media
Guest blame that goot. Report post Posted April 21, 2008 Boers & Bernstein are good too, but sometimes they can be assholes towards their own listeners. Have you HEARD some of their listeners, though? The "put Kyle Ortman in" and "Aaron Rowand has the fire and the passion" meatballs deserve to be mocked at all times, as do the racist old white guys who get cut off with the Mike North theme song (these two groups are anything but mutually exclusive). It's a weird dynamic, because you get the idea that half the audience Gets It and the other half thinks it's just a sports talk show. If anything, I have no tolerance for their NBA discussions, which just devolve into reading statistics. Probably to kill time in the Sports Dead Zone. Did you vote in the Tournament of Bad? "Waddle & Silvy" are ok. Silvy sometimes can be annoying especially with his Cubs "Homering." Given that pretty much everyone in sports radio is pro-Sox, I'll allow Hanley, Murph, and Silvy to openly root for the Cubs.
Guest blame that goot. Report post Posted April 24, 2008 Can we do a Who You Crappin'? thread justice or would everyone just fail to get the bit? I'll give it a shot once I can rustle up a few good samples.
JohnnyBlaze 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2008 Just an FYI, but Scott Van Pelt has been added to the mike tirico show full time as of may 1...he's also going to take the 3-4 hour over as well...pretty sweet IMO.
TheDevilAndGodAreRagingInsideMe 0 Report post Posted April 27, 2008 Steven A got booted from 1050 in New York, they added Tirico in his spot and extended Michael Kay from 4-7 to 3-7. Also, they added Brian Kenny as Max Kellerman's partner a while back. Seems they are trying to become more NYcentric than national, since national radio does dick in NY (look back at Dan Patrick vs. Mike and the Mad Dog for instance)
Rendclaw 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2008 Here in the Detroit area, I think that Sean Baligian is very underrated, and that's because he tries to be objective 99% of the time, and he is very funny. I think that the mainstay, Stoney and Wojo have jumped the shark, because Wojo spends too much of his time playing the whiny, elitist Detroit sports fan schtick, and always making fun of his co-host. A few years ago I would listen to them fairly regularly, but after Rome went off the air (I've been into him since 1998 or so and while I think that his having kids has taken a few MPH off his fastball and the callers have gotten progressively worse, to the point that he didn't take a single call for a week straight) I just listened to something else. Now that I work nights, I podcast like nobody's business. And yes, Petros and Money are hysterical. I got into them when they were guest hosting for Rome one week, and I podcast them too. Guest blame that goot. Report post Posted April 28, 2008 What's the deal with Mitch Albom? Is that considered sports talk, or just Shitty Mitch Albom Talk? I was able to pick his station up out of Detroit one night, but I didn't listen to the show, because it's Mitch Albom.
BruiserKC 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 Dan Patrick isn't the same since he left ESPN. I tried to listen to his new show but gave up. I don't know if it was the booking or what, but he just doesn't have that same zing he had with ESPN. Of course he could always count on the ESPN Rolodex if he needed help.
Guest College Party Report post Posted May 4, 2008 Patrick didn't have zing at Booyah Radio either, unless monotonously droning about the new Wilco album and using more pregnant pauses than an NPR host constitute "zing." I could never stand his show. So he can get interviews. So what?
Rendclaw 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 Fuck Mitch Albom right in his ear. What credibility he had with me went out the window quite some time ago. And Dan Patrick was never the same when Olbermann left ESPN. Hell the only time Patrick's ESPN show was really good was when he brought Olbermann in for an hour. Kinetic 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2008 For a guy with no discernible personality, Tirico puts on a pretty good radio show. When listening to his show, I find myself yelling at the radio a lot less than I do when listening to "The Herd." And thank God Stephen A.'s show is gone. His schtick was even more grating on the radio.

As long as he acts normal and doesn't try any stupid catchphrases then he's fine. It's when he starts trying to act cool and snarky during highlights that I go crazy.
