The Master of Side Dishes Tournament

Recommended Posts

Guest Tzar Lysergic

Thread rules:

All suggestions must be According-to-Hoyle side dishes

That is to say, Mashed Potatoes is eligible, while..I don't know..Ziti is not.

Suggest only things you've eaten strictly as sides.

I'm thinking sixteen foods, single elimination.

I'll start by entering COLESLAW

BAKED BEANS

Sweet, spicy, tangy, there are bacon chunks, what's not to love?

Please be more specific with rice.

White rice? Brown rice? Fried rice? Rice pilaf?

Just "rice" would be like someone saying "potatoes."

Going for a long shot.

Fried Okra.

I was going to say that. Nothing but some old country boys, we are.

So, I guess I'll say...

French fries.

Biscuits FTW. You can't say Mac and cheese, because people eat that as an entree all the time. As for rice, I prefer brown rice, but especially rice pilaf if you're eating some sort of grilled meat (in my case it usually goes with salmon or some other kind of fishy meat).

To follow up on the biscuits, cheddar biscuits. Ever been to Red Lobster and had those? Can't eat just one, right? No one can. Cheddar biscuits are god's gift to side dishes and pre-meal fill-ups.

See, I don't know if I'd call mac and cheese an entree exactly, as I really don't recall ever seeing mac and cheese as the center piece of a full course meal. People often eat it solo, true... but that's slightly different.

I'm going to have to disqualify mac n cheese. I love it, that's true, but I've eaten alone too many times to truly call it a side dish.

Conversely, it is on the side dish list at KFC.

We'll have to have a vote.

I've seen it served as a main dish, but it was like Mac and Cheese on crack with bits of ham and crouton like crunchy things with it. My ex's Grandmother's recipe, it was awesome.

But countering that, Mac and Cheese is generally a side once you hit the age of say 11, and excluding being at college when it's reduced to Ramen.

Edit: Since it was tossed and we are voting on it's eligibility. Mac and cheese should go in.

I don't think I've ever had fewer than six in a single visit.

Mac and cheese should definitely be considered a side dish.

Stuffed Baby Bellas are a side/appetizer so they are fair game in my not so humble opinion. They are also fucking delicious.
