Damaramu 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2006 Anybody seen this show Final Fu on MTV? It's a martial arts reality show or something. The fights are absurd and remind me why I'd never do karate or tae kwon do. They look like two retarded kids running at each other and just throwing wild punches and kicks. I think if any of these guys got into a street fight with a good boxer or kickboxer they'd hit the ground immediately.
Guest DRH 502 Report post Posted July 21, 2006 Yeah i've saw previews to it. It makes me roll my eyes. That show is about 10 years too late...it might have garnered interest before the modern era of MMA but as it is now I just chuckle at these dudes. Kick all you want to kids, a good wrestler will just put you on your back and make you like. EDIT: MTV kids I mean...I did not mean that in an MMA context although it is true to a degree. randomguy 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2006 Karate and TKD are fine to take as long as you realize what they are good for and stay away from the total bullshit of things like point-based TKD sparring. TKD will teach you good control of your legs, good balance, good agility, etc. What it won't teach you is how to win a fight.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2006 Someone told me TKD was honestly a good standup method. I tried not to laugh.

Guest DRH 502 Report post Posted July 22, 2006 Dude Jackie Chan would probably kick everyone in UFC and PRIDEs ass. Don't even get me started on Bruce Lee...
AboveAverage484 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2006 I'm not sure if Pele has better standup than Manhoef. Manhoef has more power and seems to have more control, while Pele can get kind of wild at times, though he is much better in the clinch. I say it's a tossup. As for Newton/Manhoef, it's really the only fight that I really care about on that card; Saku and Akiyama win in squashes and Rodrigo/Oyama, *ugh* unless it ends like Oyama/Ryan with Shungo going batshit before falling into a wicked armbar. Damaramu 0 Report post Posted July 23, 2006 Well I bought Shockwave 2K5 and Total Elimination 2005 and all the decisions made me sad.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted July 23, 2006 I had no idea that the Armed and Ready DVD was PRIDE 20......they don't put them on the DVD's. Is that Cro Cop's first PRIDE fight? The reason I said they're being slow with the release of the DVD's is because the latest they have out in the 2005 MW tourney is the semi-finals(or quarter finals not sure which). I'd like the finals and what not. Does PRIDE even still number? If so what number are they up to?
Guest DRH 502 Report post Posted July 23, 2006 Yeah the last one was PRIDE 31: Dreamers in Feburary...
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted July 23, 2006 Did Fedor lose recently or something?
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted July 23, 2006 Damn I know I have posted a lot and not gotten an answer yet but I have another. I have a tape of PRIDE 20(i think i bought it from Brian) and the matches seem out of order on the DVD. Did they cut the prelims off the DVD or something? Also was this DVD made for an American audience way after the PPV was even shown? It seems that way.
Guest DRH 502 Report post Posted July 24, 2006 No Fedor has never lost. Besides some bullshit match where an accidental cut or something occured and there had to be a winner declared in the tournament (never saw it just read about it so you may wanna confirm this elsewhere). Why do you ask? He broke his hand recently and Wanderlei took his place in the Absolut tournament if thats why you are wondering why he hasn't fought since the Zulu fight... Hawkius Maximus 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2006 Cut or no cut, Fedor does have one loss on his record to Tsuyoshi Kosaka in RINGS. He avenged that loss in PRIDE, so it pretty much is evened out.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2006 I just remember a thread a long time ago where Rudo went "oh god Fedor no!!!!" And I didn't know what it was in reference too. I just wanted to mention this post of mine again because I'm still wondering and wanting thoughts: I had no idea that the Armed and Ready DVD was PRIDE 20......they don't put them on the DVD's. Is that Cro Cop's first PRIDE fight? The reason I said they're being slow with the release of the DVD's is because the latest they have out in the 2005 MW tourney is the semi-finals(or quarter finals not sure which). I'd like the finals and what not. Also those god damn decisions on my Total Elimination 2k5 and Shockwave 2k4 DVDs was really irritating. Also is there a site that does MMA reviews? Like reviews of various DVD's from UFC and PRIDE.

You neglected to mention the fact that the cut was caused by an inadvertant elbow, and would have been declared a No Contest had it not been a tournament fight. Guest DRH 502 Report post Posted July 24, 2006 Dama--Scott Newman does some kick ass MMA reviews but I cannot find them right now. When I do I will post them...I don't know if he posts here or not but I have yet to see him here.
Hawkius Maximus 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2006 How the cut happened doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. It's still a loss on his record, not a no-contest. Like I said, it doesn't matter. Fedor crushed Kosaka's face in during the rematch, so all is well.

Guest DRH 502 Report post Posted July 25, 2006 Yes, but his point is NO MATTER WHAT, it is still on Fedor's record as a loss.
Hawkius Maximus 0 Report post Posted July 25, 2006 Exactly. No matter what logic you put to it, it's still an offical loss on his record. It was never changed to a No-Contest, so therefore Fedor has that loss. Which he avenged in PRIDE, so no matter what logic you apply to it, it's been resolved and is a non-issue. Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted July 25, 2006 What "official" record? Last time I checked Sherdog's Fight finder was far from official, and the Rings organization could be called MMA very loosely at best. The sport and whatever rankings/titles you want to use was far from official at that point. Hell, it's barely getting to that point even now.
World's Worst Man 0 Report post Posted July 25, 2006 The loss was a complete technicality. Given the circumstances surrounding it, it's just so, so irrelevant.
Hawkius Maximus 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2006 I don't even know how you can argue it's not an offical loss when Fedor's site ITSELF lists it as a loss, and even so, he crushed Kosaka in a rematch making it a completely worthless argument. Speaking of Fedor, what's the name of his theme song, or atleast the band that does it? I used to have it...the band name is like...Era or something.

Garth 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2006 So, wheres a good place to start for someone that is completely new to the whole world of MMA? Is there a particular promotion I should look into or one particular fighter worth investing time in to begin with? Help me out, it would be much appreciated. Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2006 The hardest part of being a new fan, at least it was to me, is appreciating the details and intricate things that make up MMA and more specifically, the ground game. It's easy for everybody to enjoy a good KO but it takes time to learn to love a guy being able to pass somebodys guard, mount and other types of positioning. When I was new to MMA I absolutely hated it when guys went to the ground because I didn't understand their motivation and reasoning. There's really no wrong way to start off watching. Go with whatever you like. If it's PRIDE that holds the appeal for you, watch PRIDE. Same goes for UFC, TKO and whatever else you dig. On most major promotions websites they have a roster list and a history of previous events. Read up on 'em. Take note of the SHOOTO fights that Lei Tong has posted at the top of the forum, some nice stuff can be found in there. As for fighters, here's a good list to start things off......... Fedor Emelianenko- Russian Heavyweight and current PRIDE HW Champion. Generally regarded as one of the best, if not the best pound-for-pound fighter in the history of the game. Combines excellent ground and pound with great standup and a very solid submission game. Georges St. Pierre- Canadian Welterweight contender in the UFC who will soon be getting a second crack at champion Matt Hughes' title come September. One of the most exciting fighters to watch and I personally have never seen him have a bad fight. Since losing to Matt Hughes at UFC 50 he's been on one of the biggest rolls in recent memory, dismantling most of the top WW's the world has to offer. Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera- Brazillian submission-based fighter who is a former PRIDE HW champ, losing the belt to Fedor in 2004. Incredible jiu-jitsu skill, coupled with freakish genetics that prevent him from tapping out or getting KO'd and an amazing array of subs. Before Fedor came along he'd all-but cleared out the HW division in PRIDE and would no doubt do the same in other promotions. There's a few guys to get you on your way.
