Dandy Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 The Happening did much better than what I thought, and Panda did well in its second week against stiff competition. Combined, that made Hulk do lower than what I was expecting.
Youth N Asia Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Sounds like word of mouth is going to kill The Happening from here out. Everyone I've talked to who's seen it says it's awful. Damn Ironman is going to make it's $300+ million, awesome
mfn Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 I haven't seen it yet, but from what I read from everyone about The Happening... I'm pretty sure I saved my friends $8.50 when I told them what it was really about.
bob_barron Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 The Happening did much better than what I thought, and Panda did well in its second week against stiff competition. Combined, that made Hulk do lower than what I was expecting. Happening's 21 percent fall from Friday to Saturday is a bad sign. While Panda did well in its second week, cartoons generally don't fall as much as 43 percent in week two. Hulk did fine, but I know the tracking had it doing 60-65 million.
Youth N Asia Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 I've heard nothing but good about Hulk, it could carry over
bob_barron Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 I've heard nothing but good about Hulk, it could carry over It also has a few weeks to rule the box office until Hancock comes in. The 15 percent Friday to Saturday fall gives some pause though
DrVenkman PhD Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Two summer comedies with the same release date? Lame. Also your name is not very work safe or Christian. Change it please.
cd213 Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 I'm happy THE HAPPENING did as well as it did. M. Night shows that he is still a draw. Plus I enjoyed the hell out of the movie. Very 1950's b-level sci-fi-ish, and I love movies that don't take themselves so seriously.
The Ghost of bps21 Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Are we sure it wasn't supposed to be taking itself seriously? The advertising sure took it seriously. I thought the fact that it DID take itself seriously is what was making it funny.
bob_barron Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 No, I think Guru will. Have to disagree with mole. I think Get Smart is headed for a 30-35 million opening, which is about what Evan Almighty did last summer. Love Guru is too unproven. The movie is totally being sold on Myers' name, and he hasn't appeared on screen in five years. Adjusted for inflation, Austin Powers, his last unproven movie, opened to 14 million adjusted for inflation. Factoring in Myers' increased starpower, and the competition, I'd say it will do in the low 20s. The two comedies facing off is basically because neither studio wanted to blink, and there really wasn't many available weekends. Very 1950's b-level sci-fi-ish, and I love movies that don't take themselves so seriously. So, it was supposed to be terrible?
Ripper Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 But bob, you didn't appreciate the awesome horribleness of I know who killed me. How can I trust you here!!! Ripper - starting to think this movie really is terrible.
bob_barron Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Oh, I Know Who Killed Me was horrible, but I freely admit that my friend and I loved sitting there and experiencing it. There were moments in The Happening where I thought the movie had redeemed itself, but then they kept running from plants
Gary Floyd Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Interesting (well, to me at least) that the dude who directed IKWKM did an adaptation of Jack Ketchum's "The Lost" before he did that, which is pretty damn good. Probably my favorite American horror movie of the year so far. The thing about "The Happening" that annoyed me was that there were moments where it feels like it's going to be a decent B-Movie, but M. Night fucks it all up. Isn't his next movie going to be a live action adaptation of a Nickelodeon cartoon.
Anakin Flair Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Good god, Iron Man is still in the top ten? Awesome. I'm glad Hulks doing as well as it is. The theater I went to on Saturday was only 1/4th filled, and it was an afternoon show.
Youth N Asia Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 I've heard nothing but good about Hulk, it could carry over It also has a few weeks to rule the box office until Hancock comes in. The 15 percent Friday to Saturday fall gives some pause though I think Wall-E dominates in 2 weeks
RepoMan Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 If they didn't have to go up against the Love Geru, I'd say Get Smart would have done much better buisness than Evan Almighty. It looked like a safe, cheesy, family comedy, while Get Smart is a fairly beloved franchise that much better fits Carrel. I was suprised The Happening broke $30 million. I think the word of mouth that it's so bad it's good will give it some decent buisness this week.
cabbageboy Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 I actually am planning to see The Happening at some point during the week, probably on Thursday. It will hopefully suck. I'll be disappointed if it doesn't suck.
The Niggardly King Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Isn't his next movie going to be a live action adaptation of a Nickelodeon cartoon. Avatar!
