Box Office Report...

I as well think it'll be Pineapple that knocks TDK off #1. Also think people are underestimating the Mummy 3, IIRC the last 2 did well and it's a fairly well-known franchise.

Yeah, but the Mummy Returns struck while the iron was hot. I guess you could count the Scorpion King as well, and even it came out the next year. There's no large gap in between those movies, because if there was, people would lose interest. I think pretty much everyone has lost interest in the series now.

I've seen some trailers for Pineapple Express. Looks god awful in my opinion, but I know I have different tastes than most people. I have not seen or heard ANYTHING about the Starwars movie outside of on this forum. I'm amazed a Starwars theatrical release has this little press. I can't imagine it doing that well with no marketing.

It's a smaller budget CGI movie with no big names and I think a lot of people are disenfranchised with Star Wars after the last three movies. I doubt it'll even get #1 opening weekend.

I think The Dark Knight will beat Stepbrothers and the new X-Files movie next weekend. I think Semi-Pro's box office receipts showed that people are getting a bit tired of Ferrell's schtick and I already explained my thoughts on The X-Files sequel. I do think TDK will get edged out by The Mummy: Tomb of The Dragon Emperor in a few weeks. I think that'll be The Rush Hour 3 of this summer. The mediocre second sequel to a popular 90s movie that does slightly better than everybody thinks.

Ok, so I finally just saw a Clone Wars trailer. It was on Nickelodeon this morning when I had Spongebob on while getting ready. So it seems like this one may be getting COMPLETELY targeted at kids, seeing that is the only time I've seen anything outside a poster at the theaters.

While I'm supprised at the lack of mainstream advertising, I think Clone Wars will do well enough. It's pretty much aimed at kids and hardcore Star Wars fans, and there's enough fo them out there to generate good business.

According to Variety, "The Dark Knight" is now estimated to have made $158.3 million over the weekend

I'm blown away. I honestly was expecting 80-90 million until I started hearing about all the sellouts days before the movie opened. I still didn't see it breaking the record though.

Damn glad that it did though since it's a phenomenal movie and Spiderman 3 was crap.

No way in hell Mummy 3 will beat TDK.

That's a fun guessing game: what movie will knock TDK out of the #1 spot? Admittedly, the competition isn't terribly strong over the next month., though with every passing week the chances of that happening get better. Here's the upcoming major releases:

July 25: Stepbrothers, X-Files 2

August 1: Mummy 3, Swing Vote

August 8: Pineapple Express, Sisterhood of Travelling Pants 2

August 15: Star Wars: Clone Wars, Tropic Thunder, Mirrors

And peeking at the next few weeks after that, it gets even lamer. I don't see any surefire hits until High School Musical 3 and Saw 5 in late October. So I'd say Mummy has as good a shot as anything else at being the first one to slip past TDK.

...godDAMN that's a lot of sequels.

Sisterhood of Travelling Pants 2. I'm calling it.

Let's just go ahead and accept the fact that HSM3 is going to make all sorts of crazy money. It won't break records, but it's going to make cuh-rayyyyyy-z cash!

Imagine if TDK opened when nothing else was out, like Spider-Man 3 did. This probably would have made $200M. I think Batman is everybody's favorite superhero deep down inside, but Spider-Man's movies made a bunch of money simply because Batman was absent from movies for about 8 years, and Batman & Robin was terrible. Therefore people were excited to see a Spider-Man movie and people started to get into him. After that awful 3rd movie though, I think people wanted a much more hardcore superhero, and since Batman was facing off against the Joker again, everyone got excited.

I seem to remember him getting upset that I thought it could do over $150 million.

Not upset, I was hoping for it to do that much. I just thought you were being overly optimistic.

Clearly I was oh so very wrong.

Let me toss out a few numbers for those who doubt the drawing power of The Mummy:

The Mummy (1999) opening weekend: 43 million. What does that translate too now?

The Mummy Returns (2001) opening weekend: 68 million.

Thing is, those movies both had the drawing power of Imhotep and Egypt. I wonder if the new movie looks way too different too be as successful. But really by Aug. 1-3 The Dark Knight will likely be down to about 40 million, and if this Mummy can simply do what the 99 film did it would win the week.

I don't think that Mummy movie is going to beat out The Dark Knight at all, I have zero interest in seeing that.

Why in the hell is there another X-Files movie??? I mean really, who gives a shit?

Mummy 2 was the best of the series (ignoring the horrible cgi Scorpion King at the end). Why they decide to make a new one seven years later is beyond me. No Stephen Sommers (then again, after Van Helsing, that is likely a very good thing), most of the cast gone... yeah, I can't see anyone really interested beyond typical popcorn moviegoers.

Comparing Batman to the X-Files is really stupid, Jingus.

Mummy's going to beat TDK. Mummy should be able to hit 40+ that weekend.

Some TDK stats-

The Dark Knight had the biggest opening weekend of all time, beating Spider-Man 3.

The Dark Knight had the second highest PSA of all time of a movie opening on 600 or more theatres (#1 is Hannah Montana)

This weekend's top 12 was the biggest of all time, beating out the weekend Pirates 2 opened.

The gap between #1 (Dark Knight) and #2 (Mamma Mia) was second all time, behind Spider-Man 3 and Disturbia.

The Dark Knight had the highest Friday amd Sunday gross of all time, beating Spider-Man 3. Spidey's Saturday gross was higher.

Why? Name me anything X-Files has ever done which was lamer than Batman and Robin. My point was, people mark for what they mark for. Don't shit on someone because they just happen to like a franchise which you don't. At least unless it's those Parody Movie pieces of shit.

I don't watch the X-Files, but it seems like there's not much buzz about the movie, and I remember everyone hated the finale.

X-Files, like the Mummy and Indiana Jones, is another summer movie that there's no reason for such a long gap between movies

Backing up to what Lushus said at the top of the page, I could see perverts showing up to jerk off to Gillian Anderson if she was still hot. But she's nearly 40 now, and from seeing her in the trailer isn't nearly as hot as she once was.

Regarding The Mummy, I'm not saying it will be a mega smash hit. But it's opening weekend should be able to beat TDK. But can Brendan Fraser draw the money without Arnold Vosloo? I guess Jet Li is there to carry him this time.

Gillian was never "hot" per se. She was more what I'd call a "handsome woman". Anyway, why do you say she's less attractive now? She's just older, is otherwise unchanged. And considering it's been fifteen years since the show first started, I'd say she aged remarkably well.

Which might matter, if Indiana Jones didn't have 310,487,614 reasons why didn't matter. Anyway, it hasn't been all that long for the others, only six years since X-Files went off the air and seven years since the last Mummy flick. Both franchises have plenty large enough a fanbase and will probably make money.

Early tracking done by some guys on some website? Why should I care?

The movie only has a $35 million dollar budget, so it doesn't have to to smash business to make its money back. Even a shitty-performing movie can make that much. Speed Racer, The Happening, Baby Mama, College Road Trip, Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Strangers, Nim's Island, and Hellboy II all made more than that. Not many major releases made less; the only current ones are Meet Dave (which is bombing in a truly unusual fashion) and The Love Guru (which came within 3 mil of hitting the number anyway). So why are you insisting that this movie is gonna lose money?

I'm not saying it's going to lose money, it just won't make a lot of money and will be overshadowed by everything else.

It's not by a guy on a website, it's tracking done by the film industry, he just reports it.
