NFL Week 2

McCall beat Lennox Lewis for the world title, but during the rematch he was getting beat up and started crying as the fight went on, leading Mills Lane to stop it. Crying. During a fight. Can't make that shit up.

I don't see the connection there.

Vince Young started "crying" not because he was hit. But because he was being booed, his offense wasn't clicking, and he hates his offensive coordinator, even though he's a better OC for Vince than Norm Chow was. Something like that.

1. Whose big-win momentum carries through to this weekend-Chicago or Carolina?

2. How well will rookie Matt Ryan and a running game that left footprints on every Detroit defender perform against the best defense in the NFC last season?

3. Can New England circle the wagons after the most catastrophic loss in recent memory against their division rivals?

4. Will the clowns that said "Anybody could shoot the lights out behind that line with those receivers!" finally realize that they're retarded?

5. Can Cleveland rebound in a huge divisional game?

1. Man, one game and everyone forgets how much the Bears were supposed to suck this year. The Panthers have been the most hard-luck team of the decade, seemingly suffering major injuries every year except 2003. They made it through Week 1 ok, and if they stay healthy, they're as dangerous as anyone in the NFC and are being criminally overlooked here. Carolina shut down LT last week, so I'm sure they can handle Matt "The Next Walter Payton" Forte just fine. Chicago's defense should be more of a challenge for Carolina, but I like the chances of the Panthers offense making plays against Chicago's D more than the other way around. Carolina ftw here.

2. Michael Turner is the real deal, but I'm not sold on Atlanta as a team just yet. I think they'll exceed most expecations for this year (considering many had them pegged for about 3 wins), but I'm not sure they can take a solid team like Tampa on the road. That said, I don't expect a blowout either.

3. While the loss of Tom Brady will certainly be felt, the Patriots cannot afford to get caught up in the gloom/doom/apocalypse talk from the media. It's not like the team was Tom Brady and a bunch of scrubs. They have strong defense (I mean, they just casually picked up a corner of Deltha O'Neal quality a couple weeks ago, and no one seemed to notice), a pretty solid group of RB's, and two elite WR's, so the team's not hopeless by any means. Cassell won't put up Brady numbers, but if he can just put up Trent Dilfer numbers, the team will still be a contender. I think Belichick will do a good job keeping his team focused for a solid run, including a win over the Jets this week.

4. We can only hope

5. I hope not. I don't think they will either. The Steelers have manhandled the Browns for most of the Roethlisberger era, and based on each team's respective showings last week, I don't see that changing now.

Pro Football Talk says that Shawne Merriman decided to sit out the rest of the year.

I'm sure the Chargers are glad he risked possibly his career for 2 freakin' tackles and wasted a spot on the 53 man roster for last week's game just to decide to do what every freakin' person in the world was telling him to do first.

The Panthers. This is a team that does very well when healthy. They just are never healthy. Since things are looking pretty good at the moment, I think they have enough to beat Chicago. I doubt this good fortune lasts though.

2. How well will rookie Matt Ryan and a running game that left footprints on every Detroit defender perform against the best defense in the NFC last season?

Not well. Tampa is a much better team than Detroit with a good veteran defence. I just can't see how a young offence like Atlanta's can handle them,

3. Can New England circle the wagons after the most catastrophic loss in recent memory against their division rivals?

Not enough to win. They looked pretty bad last week against the team that I believe to be the worst in the NFL. Granted Huard is an upgrade over Croyle, but he's still not fit to shine Brett Favre's cleats. The Patriots might keep close, but given the bad blood here and the Jets being fired up, it would be a disaster for the Jets if they lose this game.

4. Will the clowns that said "Anybody could shoot the lights out behind that line with those receivers!" finally realize that they're retarded?

They will deny they ever said it in the first place. The same thing they always do.

5. Can Cleveland rebound in a huge divisional game?

They certainly have the capability of doing so, whether they actually will or not is a different story. I'm tempted to say the Browns will win the upset, if only because this basically wraps up the division in Week 2 if they don't. It will be tough.

Some points of interest about the Atlanta vs. Tampa Bay match up...

- Tampa Bay allowed 86 more yards than their offense put up

- Tampa Bay had the same turnover differential (1 - 1)

- Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush combined for 103 yards on 24 carries (4.29)

- Atlanta had 166 more yards on offense than their opponents

- Atlanta had a slightly better turnover differential (1 - 0) but also forced Detroit into a fumble they didn't lose

- Kevin Smith and Rudi Johnson combined for 62 yards on 19 carries (3.26)

Teams need two things to win in the NFL: Outgain the defense in yards and get more turnovers on defense than offense. What worries me about Tampa is that, yes they played a good team, yet Jeff Garcia completed 1 pass more than Drew Brees but had 122 fewer yards.

Another thing that worried me was the play calling. Earnest Graham finished the game with 10 carries for 91 yards so why wasn't he featured more?

1st Quarter: 3 Carries

2nd Quarter: 4 Carries

3rd Quarter: 2 Carries (1 was for 46 yards...)

4th Quarter: 1 Carry

In the 4th quarter by drive...

1st Drive: Jeff Garcia passed 8 times (including TD) compared to 2 carries (17 yards)

2nd Drive: Jeff Garcia passed 5 times compared to 2 carries (13 yards)

3rd Drive: Jeff Garcia passed 7 times compared to 0 carries (Note: This was the final, go for the win drive)

20 Passes vs. 4 Carries (30 Yards) and they were only down 17-13 at the start of the 4th quarter.

The Cheifs actually have a pretty good defense, even after losing Jared Allen. The QB situation still sucks big time for them, but they're in no way worse than the Bengals, Lions, or Raiders right now.

I want to go ahead and discourage "A-Rod" for Aaron Rodgers now before it gets out of hand. Please try not to infect the NFL with the awful MLB/NBA nicknaming. "Purple Jesus," that's a damn good real nickname.

Yep.

And Kotz, I'd love to discourage the A-Rod nickname, except for the fact that a lot of his Packer teammates have been calling him that all off and preseason (I think I've seen/read/heard Driver, Woodson, Lee, Harris, and Barnett all doing it).

Ignoring that there's already one A-Rod in the sports world, I'd discourage naming Rodgers that too because it's about damn time we finally stopped that whole "first initial + first syllable of surname" nickmeme that's overstayed its welcome by about seven years

T-Braids!

I've taken to calling Donald Driver "Dangerous Donnie D" which is kind of a silly reference to here, but whatever.

In a typo, I once accidentally referred to Alex Rodriguez as "A-Roid." Luckily I caught myself before submitting the post.

This reminds me of A*R*O*D. Good work.

Looks like I get to make my triumphant return to the sports bar on Sunday for this game. Fact: Part of the reason I moved to this part of town back in March was because it was closer to the bar where I can watch Packer games.

1. Whose big-win momentum carries through to this weekend-Chicago or Carolina?

I like the Panthers this week. It wasn't just a memorable last-second win for the Panthers; they were the better team for about 43 minutes.

2. How well will rookie Matt Ryan and a running game that left footprints on every Detroit defender perform against the best defense in the NFC last season?

From Just John:

2. Michael Turner is the real deal, but I'm not sold on Atlanta as a team just yet. Hammer, meet nail.

3. Can New England circle the wagons after the most catastrophic loss in recent memory against their division rivals?

CanadianChris eluded to this being the most overanalyzed/overhyped game ever. I'm guilty of that. I'm seriously committed to boxing it on my ProLine this Sunday. I'm that unsure. Eventually, my answer is yes. New England is a substantially lesser team without Brady, obviously, but come on. New England will not blow the Jets away, but they'll win.

4. Will the clowns that said "Anybody could shoot the lights out behind that line with those receivers!" finally realize that they're retarded? I don't know anyone who ever said that......*sweeps dirt under rug*

5. Can Cleveland rebound in a huge divisional game?

Cleveland is a much better team than we saw last week, and I'm staying on their bandwgaon. Pittsburgh is a better team than either of the aforementioned two. My answer is no.

Yeah, I brought this up elsewhere. Gruden has at least acknowledged that the playcalling didn't make a lot of sense, so there's hope for improvement. The strength of our offense is clearly the running game. Our backs are solid and our o-line run blocks much better than they pass protect. If we're going to compete, Gruden is going to have to swallow a lot of that rocket science playbook and just run the fucking ball.

I'll be able to catch the second half of the Matt Cassel Minstrel Debut with Massa Bill and Ooooooool' Randy. God I hate the Patriots.

Pittsburgh/Cleveland is the only game I'll get to see all the way through, so I'm more excited about it than I should be. At least the environment will be intense for the first two and a half quarters.
