True, but we've never had a minority presidential canidate before, so that's never been an issue. Of the few people I've talked to that were voting for Obama, it seemed that they were more interested in bucking the system than electing the best man for the job. The thing about the black vote is figuring out what the increase of first time black voters was. Obama got 95% of the black vote...which I saw was only 5% higher than Kerry and 7% higher than Gore. Blacks vote democrat. So any new voters that Obama got out, it could be argued, could be voting for that reason...but he also got a higher youth vote out too. Youth's and blacks were going to vote Democrat either way...it's just a matter of getting them to the booth.

It's not the percentage of the black vote that is worth discussing, but rather the increase in the percentage of the electorate due to new black voters. The percentage of the black vote which goes to Obama is quite unimportant. The new percentages on how the electorate is composed are more helpful in knowing the impact his candidacy had in bringing blacks to vote.

And personally, I think it's great that a black man was elected President, even if I did not vote for him. It's good for our country to see a black man holding the highest office. I like that African-Americans in society have been able to attain the highest of goals. I don't agree with his policies, but I'd rather not get into that.

 

However, the way people keep talking about the racial aspect is beginning to bother me. It is important, but the outside world is harsh, and the problems this country has really don't give a fuck. Leaders of countries we have tensions with don't care. An economic crisis does not recognize his race. It's time to move forward and get to solutions rather than get starry-eyed and take our eyes off the ball here.
