  1. Well its not in the newsletter or the website, but Dave might have posted it himself at said board, since I know he frequents that once in awhile, or at least used to. Either that or this is a rumor at best right now.
  2. Um, I think the idea is that he's committing himself to the band full-time. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He could pretty much do that and still sign up with TNA for a fat payoff, with just working a total of 3 days maximum per month. Unless he's busy a few Tuesdays of the month and one Sunday, thats it. For what its worth, if this is true, I dont blame him. He's not going anywhere in WWE, the travel is probably hell, and there is more potential with his band than ever before. Another advantage with TNA would be if he could get them to promote/market his band as well. WWE has done it, but nothing too wild and crazy.
  3. I was right that he never resigned, doesnt surprise me. They're just going to job him out convincingly to put over Cena strong and thats it for him. TNA has GOT to sign him up by October, no questions asked. Was this in the issue coming out this coming weekend? Cuz I didnt see this in this weeks issue at all - just dont want another thing like last week when someone posted a SummerSlam card from WON that wasnt even accurate, much less from Meltzer himself.
  4. Although some may disagreee, I think there is a fine line between calling something a parody v. a homage to a certain genre, etc. While I dont think Rejects is a parody, I think Zombie paid homage to some elements of the 70's gritty, dirty, Spit on your Grave/Last House on the Left type films. But calling it a parody of the genres or whatever you are trying to say is invalid if you ask me. Calling something a parody would be the director/producer/whatever blatantly, intentionally, and directly making fun of their film at the expense of whatever they are doing a take on. Here is a weird case in point but Gremlins 2 is a parody of the first Gremlins.
  5. I'm pretty certain he already resigned. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If you could find some source to back that up, that would be great - I havent heard anything about that.
  6. Todd Martin looks at what TNA must do when it gets on Spike Points of Impact By Todd Martin For over three years, TNA has been attempting to break into the radar of the average wrestling fan. With a time slot on Spike TV in the fall, the stakes are extremely high. If the promotion can draw strong ratings and boost PPV buy rates, TNA could finally approach its long term goals. However, if the new show is a failure, Panda is likely to pull the plug on the whole venture. It is imperative for the good of the wrestling business that this show succeeds. Here are some simple keys for the show. 1. Now is the Time TNA cannot approach this show as just another opportunity. This is the best chance TNA is going to get, and it has to take advantage. While the promotion shouldn’t sacrifice the importance of PPVs, the shows on Spike have to be a big deal. TNA has produced a high quality product for much of the year, and now it needs to get people’s attention. They need to draw high enough ratings from the beginning that Spike is forced to open its eyes. TNA can then parlay that success and Spike hostility towards WWE to net the time slot and financial deal that will finally give TNA legitimate stability. In order to do that, TNA should be planning out the first month of shows minute by minute, right now. 2. Tune in Next Week Every week TNA needs to have a strong reason to get viewers to tune in the next week. TNA tried to do this early in its weekly PPV format by using surprises. That can help, and TNA should use surprises frequently early on to build interest. However, the promotion also needs to promote compelling future matchups every week. It should be like the early days of Raw, where the end of the show features a package about the next week’s main event. WWE has turned its back on long term booking, and TNA can capitalize on all the benefits that long term booking offers. 3. We’re All in This Together At this point in time, it is very important that TNA performers view themselves as part of a team. Selfish individuals more concerned with getting themselves over for a future WWE gig need to be pushed to the side. The wrestlers need to sacrifice and work as hard as possible to ensure the team does well. If collectively the promotion can put itself in a better position, then all the individual wrestlers can be better taken care of. This is not a time for egos. 4. Credibility is King There are a lot of wrestling fans disillusioned with the product WWE has put forth in recent years. One of the biggest problems is that WWE doesn’t show respect for its audience. TNA needs to go to great measures to at no point and in no way insult its audience. This was a problem for TNA in its early days, but it has been largely corrected. That has to continue. Storylines need to make complete sense, wrestlers’ motivation needs to be clear, and match results have to matter. Sizzle can be offered without compromising the steak. 5. Fanaticism is a Good Thing In the recent wrestling business, few promotions have succeeded without developing a strongly devoted legion of fans. This was true for UWF, NJPW, AJPW, WWF, ECW and WCW (although some of those fans identified themselves with NWO rather than WCW). TNA hasn’t been able to get that type of a following, outside of a small collection of fans in the southeast. TNA needs to develop that base, and use that passion to spread amongst the larger audience. TNA presently doesn’t have the negative connotation it did at one time. The next step is to create an audience not of wrestling fans that like TNA, but of TNA fans. TNA needs an affirmative identity, not a responsive one. 6. The Promotion of the Transcendent Star Any wrestling promotion needs a bankable main eventer or main eventers in order to succeed. TNA isn’t going to sign away WWE’s top stars, so it is crucial that it create its own. The fans need to perceive those stars as being the best in the world. While there is a temptation to try to give time and emphasis to everyone on the card, it makes better business sense to focus on a few. It’s also best these wrestlers not have the taint of being an undercard wrestler in WWE. Christopher Daniels, Monty Brown, A.J. Styles, and Samoa Joe fit this bill. Regardless of who TNA chooses, they should be emphasizing the wrestler or wrestlers from the beginning of the show to the end. In the middle of the first match, Mike Tenay should be telling the fans that they need to stick around in order to see A.J. Styles, because there is no one else like him in the world. More of an ensemble cast might work down the road, but right now there should be a chosen few. 7. The In-Ring Product An easy way to add extra excitement to the show is to let loose in the ring. WWE style is so static that it is easy for a more free wielding style to impress. The in-ring matches have made TNA 3 hour PPVs a big success. Now TNA needs to add the same emphasis to these one hour shows. The Spike show needs to be very strong as a stand-alone, featuring at least one “can’t miss” match a week. The wrestlers should have the green light to do pretty much whatever they can conceive of and execute. 8. Build Buzz There is no guarantee Spike is going to promote TNA with any enthusiasm whatsoever. As such, TNA needs to do everything it can to try to build buzz on its own. They should lobby Spike for advertisements on Raw in the weeks prior to Impact’s Spike debut. The right type of national promo played two times on Raw for four weeks could make a sizeable difference. From there, TNA should be aggressive in trying to get any mainstream publicity they can. It might be best to market it TNA as if it is essentially a new promotion that is going to take WWE’s place on Spike and take the sport to a different level. The perception of the promotion is often times more important than the reality. TNA should use every angle it has to get mainstream coverage. 9. You Can’t Build Around Jarrett If Jeff Jarrett is featured in the main event slot of the first few Impact shows, the show is doomed for failure. Jarrett is viewed as a midcard performer by the vast majority of the wrestling public, and he doesn’t have the charisma to convince the audience otherwise. It’s fine to have Jarrett around, because he is overall a good performer. But fans will not take seriously a wrestling alternative built around Jeff Jarrett. The Jarretts should understand this, and realize that long term they will profit more from being a valuable performer in a successful promotion than the main eventer in an independent show in Tennessee. 10. Attack, Attack, Attack The single most important thing for TNA to do early on is to attack. It needs to convey that it believes in itself as better than any other wrestling available on American television today. As such, it needs to go after the many faults of WWE. Even the fans of WWE likely realize these faults. If TNA boisterously criticizes WWE in a way that feels legitimate and not petty, fans will rally behind TNA. TNA should draw up a list of ten things that it will unquestionably do better than WWE, and beat those points home on the television show. The ideal opening segment for the first TV show would be to have the Dudleyz cut a vicious anti-WWE promo reminiscent of their heated promos at the end of ECW. They have the credibility to get casual fans to listen. If they won’t agree, I would try to get someone else to do it, making all the points about what’s wrong with WWE that fans know. Christopher Daniels could do an excellent job as well, and tie it to his own career. Hopefully advertisements on Raw will draw in casual fans to watch TNA after UFC. The beginning of the Impact show should completely blow them away, and provide a strong opening shot against WWE’s vision of pro wrestling in 2005. TNA then needs to establish an affirmative identity of its own, that stands in strong contrast to the flawed alternative. We have wrestling matches with more than five moves. The results of our matches matter. We settle things in the ring, not behind the scenes. We have Traci Brooks, while they have an endless parade of talentless bimbos. We have Chris Sabin and Petey Williams, while they have Viscera and Gene Snitsky. We have AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels, while they have JBL and HHH. They think you’re the biggest idiots on the face of the Earth, while we treat you with respect. If TNA is successful in getting across these points, it can get WWE to work for TNA. When those same fans go back to watching Raw and Smackdown and are confronted with the same problems that already bug them, they will think of TNA and look forward to a better product on Saturday. These points also need to be emphasized in the commentary. Mike Tenay has credibility, and can get away with strongly backing TNA and criticizing WWE. If he is uncomfortable with the role, they might want to consider bringing a third person into the booth to do it, with Don Callis coming to mind if available. Channeling hostility can be a powerful tool in rallying people to your cause. There is no one right way to promote Impact on Spike TV. There are a number of possibilities that could work, and the key may be finding the one creative angle that really grabs people’s attention. But regardless of the specific path TNA takes, it needs to develop a compelling marketing strategy for Impact. The moment is coming when TNA will sink or swim. It’s time to go all out. Feedback: [email protected] ------This guy makes a TON of good points. Can't really argue with much.
  7. I am pretty certain Jericho's contract expires relatively soon, by the end of Sept at least, if not end of August. It seems clear to me he is nothing but obvious fodder for putting over Cena huge to establish Cena on the Raw brand more significantly before a HHH return and inevitable feud with Cena-HHH. I seriously wouldnt be surprised if Jericho doesnt resign either, by the way. The timing of this all is pretty straight forward - they figure he might as well be the major fall guy to the new star on his way out. WWE has no intentions of re-establishing Jericho as a title threat long term, period.
  8. Here is some more details about the Rey-Eddy segment on Smackdown from pwtorch.com. I dont think it was really suggested much prior in the spoilers, but they are going with that Eddy and Rey's wife did in fact screw and it wasnt that the kid was adopted from Eddy screwing some random girl which is how I took the initial spoiler. Rey Mysterio and Dominic come out to the ring, next. Rey thanks the fans for the support on the behalf of Dominic and himself. Guerrero's music hits and he enters the arena. Rey basically in an angered tone asks "what he's doing out here." Eddie says that "regardless of what happens, he always wins in the end." He promised Rey and his own wife to let things be if he was beat at the Bash, but he lied." Rey bull rushes him, but before he can get to him on the top of the ramp way, Eddie blurts out to Dominick and the world that he's his father. Rey rushes back to Dominic to see how he's doing and hugs him, as the fans mercilessly chant "who's your daddy." Dominic forces his way out of the hug and goes off through the crowd. Rey follows him. Guerrero says that "Rey ran off because he didn't want to hear the story, but he knew that the fans here did." Eddie got many cheers from the Rochesterian fans tonight. He tells the ring announcer "to get off of his 'fat ass' and bring him his chair." He says "this is Eddie's bedtime story, chapter one." He refers to his demons in the past and how he used to "sleep with many different women during a period where him and his wife where separated." He said "during that time, Rey and his wife where unable to make a baby because Rey was shooting blanks." Eddie says "he offered his services and thus Eddie and Rey's wife created Dominic." He said, "If you think that was all, wait until next week for chapter 2." ----Yikes.
  9. WWE did not intentionally sabotage GAB into a shit ppv, its just how it was. Smackdown does not have a strong lineup in general still after the draft IMO and Raw had the advantage of the two champions on their last ppv, etc. Bottom line is Raw always will continue to get favored in general over Smackdown by management (I mean how many times have we heard Ross call Raw "the flagship of WWE"?) but add the fact that WWE was, of course, trying to compete with ECW in a way - or at best load that lineup up so that they could get their fanbase, who they assumed got the ECW show, to also put down more funds on another show two weeks later.
  10. Speak for yourself. JBL's promos are boring and repetitive. I also don't get the fascination with continuing to push this guy. I know some people like him now, but I still think he's horrible and a chore to watch. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I dont think he would be so bad if he wasnt in the main event and as such a focus of Smackdown in general. As its been said before, how long do you give a guy before you give up as he's not drawing? JBL needs a serious push down the ladder and into midcard land or at very worst, the upper midcard. To be perfectly honest, there is a ready made feud there with the BWO right now they could have went with instead of Batista. Or even feuding with Benoit wouldnt be so bad. To boot he's got a sidekick who is even worse than him as far as the company shoving him down our collective throats.
  11. I dont think the only reason Angle was brought over to Raw was because of Michaels, but the obvious first move for any booker would be to follow up with the success of that Mania match right away with an immediate rematch when they would be able to do such. Angle v. Eugene might be surprisingly good, give it a chance. And Angle was up to absolutely NOTHING on Smackdown and the move is more to match him up with other new fresh talent. Just give it time. I would assume Orton over Taker at SummerSlam, then a blowoff finale match at a future ppv in the rubber match. I think we might actually see the same with HBK/Angle down the road too but it probably wont be for awhile.
  12. The other depressing state of the world title match is I can imagine 1) there wont be any gimmick to the match which is almost mandatory in a Bradshaw match against someone who can't carry him and 2) agents and the workers probably wont even follow up properly from GAB and they will generally lay out a very similar match than before, except with Batista finally going over. I can't believe I'm saying this but I'd almost rather have Hassan v. Batista instead of this shit.
  13. Well the results overall was exactly what I expected - all kinds of weak. I cant believe they are actually going through with JBL-Batista again, and especially at SS. It reminds me of the company doing Steiner-HHH at two ppvs in a row, which was borderline insane when during the first match the crowd completely shit all over it to the max. While the result extensively wasnt as harsh as Steiner-HHH, the fans and management clearly didnt think the intial match at GAB between them was good, so why waste another shot at it, especially at the 2nd biggest ppv of the year. Guess this means Taker/Orton 2 at SummerSlam, which I think could have easily been saved for the next SD brand ppv instead (and they could have went with JBL v. Taker v. Batista and if need be v. Orton in a 4 way). WWE completely went 0-3 this week with their big TV spots. Bad time to start dropping the ball creatively after a pretty hot streak of generally good shows all summer long.
  14. Does anyone know what all had to get cut to make it a R rated version? Just curious....
  15. You DO realize that a very itsy bitsy minority of people even know that? Its kind of a non factor in the big scheme of things in that the angle is incredibly predictable, but I guess it serves it purpose - next big match at SummerSlam.
  16. Ummm no - in fact IMO both brands main shows have overall been stronger than most years this whole year in general. They just happen to have a shit show once in awhile, it doesnt surprise me. But they would not intentionally water down shows to make themselves look more attractive to another station. In fact it's probably the other way around, they are attempting to be strong leading into the switch so they can convert all of the fanbase over easily.
  17. All I can hope is this is a reason to take Kane off TV for awhile, as the shit with him and Edge/Lita NEEDS to be done NOW if they want to go with what is actually logical, Hardy v. Edge. Its just weird that now apparently Lita wont be playing a part in that feud at all, which is yet another illogical booking move of many lately. That angle last night just did not click on any level IMO. People are well overly exhausted on the Kane/Lita/Edge feud.
  18. Yeah I forgot about the Viscera tag match. What a waste of all of those guys, and then to bring in crappy midgets to try to develop a feud, how ridiculous. One of the worst segments on WWE TV this year easily so far.
  19. A team challenge-eque idea would be strong leading in on the TV shows to a Survivor Series ppv that would have the team that wins the brackets on Raw against a team who wins the Smackdown brackets. For the ppv match also, go back to a 5 v. 5 elimination match. The shows before the ppvs could be a mixture of all kinds of singles, tag, six man, etc. Just makes sense playing into the history of that ppv with the team captains, etc. Would be a perfect chance as well to play with the interpromotional match up for Survivor Series, much like the Rumble match has both brands. In terms of a typical round robin style, I think during an off month one of the brands should try it to lead to a number one contender or better yet, if they ever decide to vacate a world title. Have a bunch of the round robin matches on free TV with the finals on a ppv. I thought they were intially going to do this with thr 5 or 6 guys wanting a title shot on Smackdown right after Mania, but it turned out to be whatever the hell that was.
  20. I've seen UFC shows in double packs for $20 there, so its possible they could give a shot at doing a triple pack for $30, which would be a hell of a deal, of course.
  21. This would be my assumption/suggestions for SummerSlam card.. RAW SIDE Hogan-Michaels Cena-Jericho Hardy/Edge - Non sanctioned "lights out" match with no rules Eugene/Angle - submission match or else normal match Possibly another Carlito/Benjamin match - no DQ and no CO SMACKDOWN SIDE Batista v. JBL v. Taker v. Orton - fatal 4 way- I can't see them going with JBL/Batista as a single match when the GAB match sucked so badly. Rey v. Eddy - latino street fight or something, blowoff match to feud. Perhaps added stips. Juvi v. London Gauntlet turmoil match for US title - Benoit v. Regal v. Christian v. Booker T v. Jordan MNM v. Crazy/Psicosis? ----I'm sure alot of those wont happen but oh well.....
  22. God, can they just kill off the Diva Search already if the best idea they can come up with is a fucking hot dog eating contest? At least try and draw some sexual innuendo from it akin to the ice cream eating deal last year. Ugh. Most of the show was actually pretty weak IMO. How they can fucking kill off Benjamin in such a way as that is beyond me. Some will argue he was in a handicap match anyway but Masters does NOT deserve a win over him, PERIOD. Are they going to still try to build to a rematch with Carlito at SummerSlam? Man, they're just ruining one of their biggest upcoming stars on the brand right now, and I'm NOT talking about Carlito!! The Eugene thing was alright and will lead to Angle-Eugene at SummerSlam I assume. Might be a tremedous match if they work a technical style and not Eugene doing his typical retard motions. It's amazing how long the metal challenge has gone on for though, hasnt it been at least for a year? I didnt think the HBK promo was that great, although it was somewhat interesting. So they apparently want to keep HBK face after all huh? This feud is getting good... The Cena-Jericho stuff was ok, albeit predictable. I'm not following what the fuck Raw is doing with Kane and this shit with Edge/Lita. Can they just end it already or was that what is considered a blowoff? Lita off of TV right now is illogical when they are building to Hardy/Edge at SummerSlam I assume. After weeks of being strong TV and ppvs, so far this week WWE TV is 0-2. I dont have much faith in Smackdown this week either.
  23. http://www.lordsofpain.net/news/2005_/arti.../1122378629.php <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well at least Vince wasnt ignorant enough to think that show was a home run, as it most certainly was NOT. I think it was one of the most least enjoyed ppv I've watched in years the more I've thought about it. It wasnt just that the main event sucked though, although that certainly really dropped the ball on the show as a whole. Batista-JBL was certainly a shit match, but I dont think the blame resides solely on Batista or JBL in particularly, although they both did seem to work at half the ability one would expect from them. There was a certain mistake on the way that match was laid out by the wrestlers/agents, as it was tedious and boring. None of the HHH-Batista matches were laid out to the basic level that this one seemed to be. I think it's clear JBL can't work a "normal" match unless he is carried strongly by someone (see Eddy G.) or else the match is really in particularly laid out in great detail to protect his weaknesses.
  24. I thought MLW was generally a very well booked promotion by Bauer, lots of interesting feuds and a very ECW-esque feel for it. I think he just ran into, much like Heyman, actually knowing how to run the finances of the company properly. The other promotion I never saw so I can't comment - if I recall correctly, I dont think it ever really got off the ground.
  25. There was one scene (which I can't specify, since I don't know how to do spoilers) where pretty much everyone in the theatre laughed at an inopportune time ... as soon as we all quieted down, someone yelled out "how was that funny?!?" There were quite a few scenes that were LOL funny. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I found it odd that people laughed so hard at that part. Desensitized freaks. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That part literally made me feel a little sick to my stomach to be quite honest. Disturbing as fuck....
