  1. Yeah, also preferred the DB manga. Plus, you dont' have to worry about censoring or crappy dubbing. You just need a decent translation, and you're good.
  2. Game informer...lol. I don't think it's a particularly good idea. It would require major rewrites, a better translation, and new subquests to make it worth playing, and that's for starters. Considering it is in the print mag, and that issue is probably about 3 weeks old in internet news time, the fact that no one else has made a peep about it seems to tell you how true it is.
  3. Hey, look--a new Capcom fighter! http://www.americandadvsfamilyguy.com/ (it's really sad)
  4. Yeah, they live in Japan. As bizaare as Nintendo's decisions were this generation, the DS is outselling *everything* in Japan right now. The extremely-traditional GC didn't do them any favors in the long run.
  5. I got a huge kick out of the huge pool of bl--er, WINE! WINE! Y7? I never noticed. It shouldn't really be a big deal because of the time slot, though.
  6. Lack of plot development is of little concern for most people who like the series. Lots of action-based animes do half-assed jobs of cramming it in. That just really drags them down and makes them seem schizophrenic and unfocused. CB gives you snippets here and there about where their characters came from and why they are the way they are, but yeah--that's pretty much where it ends. CB knows what it is. NGE knows that you know what it should be, and then it becomes something else, just because it can, and just because Anno had aspirations of greatness and wanted to break out of the little box people put him in. And yeah, "unlikeable" is fairly subjective, but there's a difference between flawed characters with value, and a cast that becomes more and more annoying to the point where you stop giving a damn. "The last few things you mentioned, word for word, apply to another colossal screwup, KKNJ." Oooh, look at me--using the acronym for the Japanese name for His & Her Circumstances (which I never saw, but googled the acronym). Feel free to get up on the soapbox and vent about that one, but it seemed that one was just a blip compared to most of the big name series.
  7. *waves to Cowboy Bebop* The only knock I can see against Eva is the terrible ending (and really, even the movie ending wasn't that good). Whereas the pimped to high heavens Cowboy Bebop had almost no plot development, yet doesn't seem to catch any flak for it. To me, that's being overrated So you figure using a generic sci-fi anime template with unlikeable characters to start, imposing 500 megatons of religious symbolism and existentialist claptrap into it over the course of its run, and padding out most of the later portions with recycled animation (or no animation), and spewing boring dialogues over it, capping it out with a terrible ending really deserves the years of cover features and praise referring to it as the greatest anime tv series ever? Of course, we know at least part of the reason for that. "Oh ****, we're out of money! WHAT DO WE DO?!" Anno: Um...dig out the stock footage, have the characters insult each other, and make sure we beat it into the audiences' heads how much of a ****ing loser Shinji is. People will rave that it is deep and smartly written. "Brilliant!" How about the balls to make an entire feature release that is nothing but summary and recycled animation? And put me in the camp that would like to see more Milk-Chan. However, Bo x 7 has really overstayed its welcome. I don't find it the least bit amusing anymore.
  8. I wouldn't be surprised if the last two had a major Hawkgirl plot. They're really overdone it with her.
  9. He refused to let Sega Technical Institute use the Nights engine for Sonic Xtreme, or he'd walk, so they had to start over from scratch. Naka didn't create Sonic or design the stages of Sonic 1. Basically, all the hype about him was like a really mediocre director getting credited for a good movie when he just used a great script and the entire movie had been masterfully storyboarded.
  10. The SNES CD add-on had nothing to do with it. Nintendo saw Sega's colossal screw ups and realized it wasn't such a hot idea. The problem was that by the time Nintendo adopted disc-based media for games, they'd already been overwhelmed by Sony. Well, that and Nintendo happens to not be a world-wide reaching super conglomerate like Microsoft and Sony. When you own movie studios, record companies, make dozens of types of electronics, own half a country, etc. it's pretty easy to arrange a marketing blitz. Likewise, when your operating system is in 9/10 PCs worldwide and you have more money than God, you can burst into the videogame biz despite having no prior experience, and still buy your way to at least modest success. Nintendo is run by some crazies, but they aren't as stupid as Sega, whose US and Japan wings were at each other's throats, burned bridges with millions of gamers, thought there was *NO WAY IN HELL* that enough people would play those nerdy "role playing games" for them to bother marketing them, and thought FMV games were the future of gaming. It wasn't even until recently that Sega put Yuji Naka out to pasture, denying for years that he was little more than a cancer who had ceased to produce anything relevent for years.
  11. Yeah, MGS2 continues the story of MGS.... But while the gameplay is good, the story is not very good. Quite painful in plenty of places, in fact. I would recommend just looking up plot summaries on MGS2, and buying MGS3 (or MGS3 Subsistence, which has improved gameplay, a better camera, as well as bonuses not in MGS3).
  12. That better be the last Hawkgirl ep.
  13. The Nintendo WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAI!!!~~~
  14. Actually, I was just setting it up. No one bit. It was appropo because it was supposedly another cross-culture marketing blunder. They were gonna call it the Go. They could then call the next console the Supernova, which is a star dying with a bang. Nova invented revolutions and the Wii. etc. "A JST is what now?" A poster I replied to.
  15. Indeed, there was also the notion of an inventory... like when she gets that knife, uses it to get through the painting, then drops it [this item is no longer needed...drop it?]. She dropped it by accident, but still, it was a little wink wink to the gamers in the audience. That's for keys. She should have tossed it in a magic inventory box and pulled it out later. Or given it to a guy in riot gear.
  16. That's a complete myth, actually. Read up on your wikipedia. No va =/= Nova. At least somebody finally caught one of the built-in jokes, though.
  17. First: Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics, way back on Nick in the mid-late 80's. Yeah, surprising. I didn't get exposed or hear about Voltron, Kimba, etc until years later. I have the entire Slayers series, OG, NEXT, and TRY. It usually keeps the balance of stupid humor to story well in check. I hate Rumiko's stuff. I've never laughed at the Ramna I saw, all her character designs are so lame and repetitive they give Toriyama a run for their money. Plus, the animated stuff based on it tends to have lousy animation, and even poorer dubbing/writing. When I first saw InuYasha, I thought "wow, this isn't as big a pile of crap as I expected. It's still not *good*, but still..." I have some affection for Toriyama because I kind of like original DB, and since my first exposure to his stuff was Chrono Trigger. Although I watched, liked, and got deathly sick of DBZ. Madhouse's stuff I like, but I hate when they really slack on the animation and it looks really choppy. Lots of anime sacrifice detail for smoothness of the animation. More anime should go with simpler character designs. Eva's okay, but is the most overrated anime ever. It never ceases to amaze me how much "subbies" will claim even the most contrived and commercialized series are "ruined" by American dubs. Sorry, Yugioh and Beyblade could be written by fucking Shakespeare, and the animation would still be shit and the plots would still be utterly pointless and stupid.
  18. I'm disappointed nobody picked up on my reference in my reply to JST. There's like 5 different jokes buried in there. NOBODY could get one of them?
  19. Yeah. It would still get bathroom jokes, but it wasn't be as common or easy. It sounds more for a portable system, which it is in a sense.
  20. Anya ignored the post, and is completely ignoring that Capcom is releasing new games, but different types of games. Hell, they were extremely successful last year, and weren't banking on a single fighter at all. And why the hell did you pick a username like "tigeraid" then? And why are you apparently blaming Capcom for burning you out on fighting games? Other companies make them, you know. You already made it clear it wasn't that it was simply a 2D thing.
  21. Simply, it doesn't work for Japan, and is relatively long and clunky when you try to translate it. It can't even be pronounced by most native Japanese speakers. Wii doesn't really mean anything, but it's something distinctive. For English-speakers, it's all about bad puns and bathroom humor, though. And as Anya says, the name by itself has to be put in a very specific context for anyone to get what you're talking about. You'd have to say "Nintendo Wii" when you should be able to just say the name of the console. Nintendo Nova would be better.
  22. Go to the link. It's pronounced "We." There's no mistake.
  23. Captain Pun-ishment needs to fly to Japan and kick somebody's face in. Worst console name, ever. Even worse than just being numbers (see; Atari 2600, etc.). I was expecting something 1 syllable ever since I heard the rumor about the "Go" name, but Apple doesn't call their little MP3 player the iPuu.
  24. http://revolution.nintendo.com/ In the immortal words of many an RPG protagonist... "..."
  25. Shining Force 3: http://shiningforceacting.ytmnd.com/ Also just as bad is Castle Shikigami 2 on PS2, which is like 10 bucks and worth every penny. However, for a professional actress, it's definitely horrendous. It just screams "I'm embarrassed to be doing acting for a video game, so I'm going to 1/8 ass it."
