Man, that Diamond/Swinger and Gilberti/Young feud is gonna bring in the PPV buys.
-
Watts has a masked man? Wow, where have I been.
-
So far AMW d. Redshirts and Shane won the X-division match...anything else?
-
Sucks that Shane won, but damn that's pretty sweet with another X Cup.
-
Thanks for recapping tonight, even if it's painful.
-
Any reason in particular that Studd was picked to win it?
-
I must be one of the few who didn't like the 2003 Royal Rumble at all. Lesnar comes in at 29 and wins it. Taker at 30. The last four in the ring are Brock, Taker, Kane, and Batista, and before that it was A-Train. It was a fast paced start, but I really was disappointed in it in the end. Going back to the poster who liked the 96 Rumble, it also has historical significance, with the debuts of Vader and Austin, obviously. Not too bad.
-
Yeah, I believe you're right.
-
It also has one of the coolest "looks" of any WWF PPV ever, IMO.

ummm.......Sid eliminated Hogan. It makes perfect sense. Like I said though, Hogan was the top # 1 babyface in the company. Young kids are supposed to look at the guy as a basically a role model. Hogan gets eliminated CLEANLY by Sid. Rather than just walk off and "fight another day", Hogan decides to basically go against that and help heel Flair win. Even Gorilla Monsoon makes a case about it on commentary. Unless it was foreshadowing a heel turn, it made no sense. Nah, Hogan's just a baby. The 94 Rumble, except for the Diesel segment and the notable ending, was really boring and pretty worthless. The 98 Rumble it was obvious Austin was winning, but the end with the Rock was fairly hot. The 93 Rumble is pretty blah except for Backlund's run in the ring and of course Giant Gonzalez.

Ding, ding, ding...we have a winner. God that was awful.
-
I don't mind Henry's finisher. It seems realisitic, even if it's boring. But at least it seems realistic, unlike the Acid Drop/Dudley Dog or some dumb move like that which requires help from the victim to pull it off.
-
I didn't like the 96 finish because it all happened so quickly, there wasn't any time for drama. They could have had Diesel and Shawn go at it for 2-3 minutes before the ending, IMO. I love the ending to the 95 Rumble. Sure, the one minute intervals sucked, but the ending was pretty cool, especially with it ending with the guys who started numbers 1 and 2.

Why did the WWF never go back to the Silverdome for a Wrestlemania after the success of WM3? Would they have not have done enough business without a match as big as Andre vs. Hogan? I would think they could have for the huge Hogan/Savage match at WM5. What led to WM9 being at such a small venue, not to mention an outdoors one, like Caesar's Palace? Was the card held during the afternoon? Thanks!

Of the Rumble matches themselves, not the entire PPV's, which is your favorite? Most people say 1992, but there are several other good ones. Which do you think is the worst? I remember the 96 Rumble as being pretty awful, with a boring ending, too. Lots of people hate the 99 Rumble. Which Rumble finish did you like the best? The double finish in 94? The HBK/Bulldog finish in 95? Flair eliminating Sid in 92? The Rock and Big Show's end to the Rumble in 2000?

I think it would have been fine for a month at the very most. Then HBK gets it, then Austin gets it at WM. I guess, though, without the Bret screwjob, we might not have ever gotten the Austin/Macmahon feud.

The only Mean Gene moment that matters is Summerslam 1989. Tony: Let's send it backstage to Mean Gene Okerlund, who's standing by with Bobby Heenan and Rick Rude! Gene: Thanks Tony, I'm here- [The entire backdrop falls down.] Gene: Aw, fuck it!

How long did they last in the WWF? I'm watching Survivor Series 97 and JR is REALLY working to get them over, especially Kurrgan (Interrogator).
-
So I was watching Survivor Series 97, since I had never really watched the card before, just the main event. I got to thinking about why the WWF didn't do something to keep what happened that night from happening. It's not a perfect solution, but it's better than screwing Bret was. Let me see what you think: Okay, the main problem is that Bret is leaving for WCW, and this is his last match. He's the champ, and they need to get the belt off him. But he doesn't want to lose to HBK in Montreal, because he's been built up to be a Canadian hero, and he thinks Shawn's a dick. So let's say the show starts with one of the higer profile matches first - Stone Cold Steve Austin beats Owen Hart for the IC title with a quick stunner, fighting off interference from the Hart Foundation. Anyways, after 2 matches or so, HBK and HHH do an interview backstage where HBK rips on Canada, wipes his ass with the flag, etc. Then from behind, BAM! The Hart Foundation attacks, and lay a MONSTER beatdown to DX. Michaels has to be stretchered out of the arena, and the main event is in jeopardy. The show continues. Later it's announced that Shawn won't be able to wrestle. Bret does an interview saying he doesn't care because it's his last night here and he doesn't care what happens to him, it's not like they can suspend him. But then Owen asks him for a title shot, since the fans in Montreal want one hell of a main event. Bret agrees. They do a great main event, Owen wins, and is the new WWF champ. There's a big warm Canadian moment with Bret putting over Owen, etc. Hell, you could even end with Austin running out, pissed that he beat Owen and now Owen is WWF champ. Then they could have put the belt on HBK at the December IYH or the next night on RAW or whatever. It would put Austin over as having a beef and wanting to go after the WWF title, and it would put Owen over big in Canada. It would have avoided the screwjob. I know Owen's health wasn't the best at the time, so he might not have been able to put out a ***** classic with his brother...but what do you guys think? Okay, I need to stop rambling.

The following are the only WWF PPV's left that I have not seen. I was hoping people could reply to give me thumbs up or down or in the middle to the shows and tell me which ones I should bother finding on ebay or wherever. They are: Royal Rumble 1989 Survivor Series 1989 Royal Rumble 1990 Royal Rumble 1991 In Your House 4 and 5 (thought I have seen the Winter Combat tape that has matches from each show.) WWF IYH July 1996 - International Incident WWF Bad Blood 1997 (But I've seen Taker/HBK HIAC) WWF D-Generation X, December 1997 So whaddya think? Thanks!
-
Was there any reason in particular that Doink was turned face in 1993? Were they not happy with how he did as a heel, or just wanted to freshen the character up?
-
I think you mean the 8 man tag at Wrestlemania 8. But I'm pretty sure Repo Man was in the 93 Rumble, and probably wrestled for a few months after that into 1993. Check Cawthon's page if you wanna know for sure.
-
Dammit, nobody knows!
-
Hey, it's wrestling, it's all subjective. I loved the match to death, but I agree with the original poster that it's probably ****1/4-****1/2, not quite up to the Bret/Austin ***** that is probably my favorite match ever. But it tells a great story, HBK totally carries Taker, and it was a lot of fun to watch live. Sure, the Kane thing at the end is lame, but at least they had an angle back then and knew where they were going with it, and it pushed somebody new.
