  1. Thought I'd written it already. The finals MVP is Michael Cuddyer who hit six home runs and 10 RBIs in the six-game series.
  2. haha I wanna shoot something. why in the world do you need a 37 year old catcher that hasn't played in the majors in 2 years? They have Ramon Hernandez and Paul Bako. Keylor of course, for being the OS MLPOY, is like 28 and never made it to AAA..so its not the worst move in that sense, but I just dont understand going after a 37 year old catcher..if they need a 3rd catcher..there would have to be someone younger and available.. Organizational depth. It gives them a AAA catcher and option in case of emergency. Remember a team has more to deal with than just their major league roster.
  3. '46 Red Sox 3, '95 Braves 2 WP: Mace Brown (1-0) LP: Tom Glavine (0-1) Sv: Bob Klinger (2) Bobby Doerr hit a two-run home run in the sixth to give the Red Sox the lead, and the Sox held on. Tom Glavine pitched a complete game in the loss. Ted Williams went 0-4, giving him an .095 batting average for the series. '06 Twins 8, '01 Mariners 2 WP: Francisco Liriano (2-0) LP: Jamie Moyer (1-1) Joe Mauer hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Michael Cuddyer followed up with a solo home run of his own. The Twins added three more runs in the second inning and cruised to victory. Twins 4-2 Mariners 3-3 Red Sox 3-3 Braves 2-4 The 2006 Minnesota Twins win the tournament. 4. For what it's worth, the home team was 104-95 the rest of the time.
  5. '95 Braves 3, '01 Mariners 2 WP: Greg Maddux (2-0) LP: Freddy Garcia (0-1) The Mariners took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on RBI doubles by Carlos Guillen and Edgar Martinez. The Braves got one run back on an RBI double by Mark Lemke in the fifth. In the seventh, back-to-back RBI hits from Marquis Grissom and Jeff Blauser gave the Braves the lead, which they never relinquished. Greg Maddux in his two starts allowed two earned runs and pitched two complete games, making him a candidate for series MVP. '06 Twins 3, '46 Red Sox 1 WP: Johan Santana (1-1) LP: Tex Hughson (0-1) Dom Dimaggio put the Red Sox ahead with an RBI single in the first inning. The Twins immediately answered back however, taking the lead on a two-run home run by Justin Morneau in the second. Jason Tyner added an insurance run with an RBI double in the fourth. Johan Santana pitched a complete game in the victory. Mariners 3-2 Twins 3-2 Red Sox 2-3 Braves 2-3 The Mariners and Twins' matchup will decide the championship. 6. The only thing Hogan did wrong was not own up to it. It's a f'n Royal Rumble. You're SUPPOSED to eliminate the other wrestlers!
  7. Who would that be in this case?
  8. See above with regard to Spring Training statistics. Remember Hansen is still only 23.
  9. That's a good point, and maybe I phrased it a bit wrong with booking patterns. I think the ideal is that you can modernize things, but it should be something the fans then would buy. Various promotions were running "Tower of Doom" triple cage matches in the late '80s. I think the bigger issue is running such a match on the same card as a 20 man battle royal and an 8 man tournament, so I'm more inclined to stick with the six-man tag.
  10. Cuts being made. As expected, the Royals sent Angel Berroa to the minors. The White Sox sent Charlie Haeger to AAA, meaning Gavin Floyd is likely their fifth starter.
  11. Save the sarcasm for some place actually making those predictions. No one here is salivating over Matsuzaka more than necessary.
  12. Roberts-DiBiase at back to back Wrestlemanias? Some of these are different, not better or worse. I think a rebook should fix some obvious problems, but still maintain contemporary booking patterns/storylines and be realistic. I would run the tournament. You want a face to leave with the WWF title, but Hogan is taking time off. That leaves you with Randy Savage. You can either hotshot the title and give Savage a shot at Wrestlemania IV, or hold the tournament. We can do a few things to fix up the event however. World Title Tournament Brutus Beefcake One Man Gang Randy Savage Honky Tonk Man Ted Dibiase Ricky Steamboat Hulk Hogan Andre the Giant Savage, OMG and Dibiase advance, and Hogan/Andre have their double disqualification. From there you have the original finals (Savage vs. OMG and then Savage-DiBiase), and you maintain the original booking. Steamboat gives Dibiase a good opponent capable of making him look good. Savage/Honky provides a proper blowoff. Honky can't pull shenanigans because he's going for the World title. Savage pins Honky, giving him a clean win but giving a way for Honky to retain the IC title. One Man Gang is just a credible threat later on. The big improvement overall is that we maintain the important booking points of the tournament while cutting a lot of fat. The British Bulldogs/Koko B. Ware vs. Islanders/Bobby Heenan Demolition vs. Strike Force 20 Man Battle Royal Keep these matches as is. The first match had the comedy moment of Matilda humping Bobby Heenan. The Demolition/Strike Force match established Demolition as tag team champions and set the stage for their two-year run. The 20 man battle royal established Bad News Brown as a heel threat and planted the seed for the Hart Foundation's face turn. The Ultimate Warrior vs. Hercules (dog collar match) Same concept, but with a stipulation to break the monotony of straight wrestling matches. Jim Duggan/Don Muraco/Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Dino Bravo/Butch Reed/Greg Valentine Your upper-card wrestlers left out of the tournament in a six man tag. If you prefer, you can turn this into a six-man free-for-all with a title shot on the line. None are really suited for ladder match work so I wouldn't make it Money In the Bank. Jake Roberts vs. Rick Rude The Cheryl Roberts issue gives these two enough heat for a one-on-one match, and outside of the tournament you can book a real finish. Twelve matches in all, which should cut down the card to a manageable three hours. With luck we've improved match quality somewhat while maintaining the important booking points in the event.
  13. '46 Red Sox 4, '01 Mariners 2 WP: Joe Dobson (1-0) LP: Joel Pineiro (0-1) Sv: Bob Klinger (1) Just like that we have a tournament again. Dobson allowed a two-run home run to Edgar Martinez in the first, but settled down and allowed no more runs in eight innings of work. The Red Sox scored three runs in the second despite not collecting a single hit. Hal Wagner added an insurance run with an RBI single in the eighth. '06 Twins 11, '95 Braves 6 WP: Boof Bonser (1-0) LP: Steve Avery (0-1) Jason Tyner and Michael Cuddyer both collected three RBIs for the Twins in the victory. Boof Bonser lasted a shaky five innings before turning over the game to the bullpen. Ryan Klesko collected three RBIs for the Braves in a losing effort. Mariners 3-1 Red Sox 2-2 Twins 2-2 Braves 1-3 The Braves need to beat the Mariners in order to stay alive. The Twins/Red Sox game will be vital for both teams obviously. If nothing else, the Mariners can not clinch the series until the sixth day. Since the Twins/Mariners play on day six, a Twins victory would eliminate both the Sox and Braves. 14. '01 Mariners 4, '06 Twins 3 WP: Aaron Sele (1-0) LP: Brad Radke (0-1) Sv: Kazuhiro Sasaki (1) Bret Boone collected two RBIs as the Mariners squeaked by the Twins. Aaron Sele pitched seven solid innings before turning over the game to Arthur Rhodes and Kaz Sasaki. Michael Cuddyer continued his offensive assault with a double and home run. '46 Red Sox 10, '95 Braves 2 WP: Mickey Harris (1-0) LP: John Smoltz (0-1) Rudy York and Pinky Higgins both collected four RBIs for the Sox. The Red Sox scored five runs off Mark Wohlers in the ninth inning to turn the game into a blowout. John Smoltz turned in a quality start, allowing three earned runs in six innings. Mariners 3-0 Braves 1-2 Twins 1-2 Red Sox 1-2 The Mariners are up two games on the field with three remaining, a tremendous advantage. One good thing here is that the possibility of a three-way tie is gone. If the Red Sox lose to the Mariners tomorrow, the Sox are mathematically eliminated. Lineup: 01 Sea. 15. Wouldn't Leroy McGuirk's daughter have been Mike McGuirk, WWF announcer in the early '90s?
  16. You know, we really take it for granted how much the top guys job in this era. Go back to the '60s and '70s and good luck finding some top guys who will do clean jobs at ANY level. Guys on top will job rarely. That's the way of wrestling, and quite honestly in most cases that's the way it should be. Wrestling is a dog-eat-dog business that chews up and spits out its talent.
  17. In 303 plate appearances leading off last year, Pierre hit 14 doubles. I don't think either is a bad choice. The reasoning is just that Furcal is the guy you want when you turned over the lineup. A couple of pieces of news. The Royals traded for Tony Pena Jr., I assume he'll take the shortstop job from Angel Berroa. Pena can't hit but at least he is a superb gloveman. The Rockies sent Clint Barmes to AAA, making Troy Tulowitski the starting shortstop.
  18. You mean the LEGENDARY Samu. Afa's promotion, WXW, referred to Samu that way in their shows. I found it quite amusing.
  19. '01 Mariners 4, '95 Braves 2 WP: Jamie Moyer (1-0) LP: Pedro Borbon (0-1) Sv: Kazuhiro Sasaki (1) The Mariners scored two runs in the eighth off RBI singles by Ichiro Suzuki and Mike Cameron. Tom Glavine allowed just one earned run over seven innings. This series has produced a few interesting pitching matchups, such as Moyer/Glavine and Maddux/Santana. '06 Twins 11, '46 Red Sox 2 WP: Francisco Liriano (1-0) LP: Dave Ferriss (0-1) Michael Cuddyer went 4 for 5 with three home runs and four RBIs as the Twins crushed the Red Sox. 20. This is true for nearly the entire autobiographical industry, bot just wrestling books. In some instances it is more obvious than others. Freddie Blassie's book was great but it was obvious in many parts that the author was filling in background information that Blassie would've never bothered with. Many times the author collects information through interviews with the subject at sets to work. It's possible, but almost an impossibility given their heel personas.
  21. My schedule's too hectic to allow me to do another fantasy team, unfortunately. It'll be good to see how this league does to iron out any kinks in the system for the future though.
  22. For any reason besides that Pierre steals a lot of bases? His OBP the last two seasons leaves much to be desired as a leadoff hitter. Dodgers' broadcaster Charlie Steiner reported the reason Furcal leads off is that Pierre's smallball tendencies play better in the two spot. That makes sense. Pierre rarely strikes out and grounds into few double plays.
  23. I hope the play-by-plays are clear enough. I edited the post to put it in code so everything now aligns correctly. Inn. 1: 46 Boston [Starter] Garcia Moses 4-3 . . . Pesky 2B . X . Dimaggio 1B . X . X@4:Pesky 7-2 . X . Williams BB . X X York 6-4 F X . X Looking at an example of a half-inning. Wally Moses grounded out second to first, that's easy. Johnny Pesky doubled. You will note the . . . marks. They refer to the bases from third to first. An "X" means the base is occupied at the conclusion of the play. Dom Dimaggio singled, but Pesky was thrown out attempting to score. You'll note second base occupied, meaning Dimaggio moved up on the throw. Ted Williams walks. Rudy York grounds into a fielders choice. Day two results should be up early this afternoon.
  24. Blood diseases are one thing, but staph infections from dirty rings and locker rooms are an obvious concern and I'm surprised it doesn't come up more often.
  25. Nah. Wrestlers filled that role long before Arn Anderson came along. Anderson didn't really create anything new to my knowledge, but he was very good in all aspects of his game.
