  1. You know how some managers just have a hard on for a certain player? I've been reading all these articles the past couple days about how Jack McKeon thinks that Lenny Harris is a good luck charm and that whenever he's in games the Marlins win. So, today, down 4-2 in the 9th, Miguel Cabrera hits a homerun to lead off the inning to cut it to 4-3. Conine walks, Redmond sacrifices him to second. Nunez strikes out on a ball in the dirt, bringing up Alex Gonzalez as the last chance. BUT WAIT, for some reason McKeon decides to bring in Lenny Harris, who is honestly as old as my mother, and he hits a harmless pop fly to end the game. I'm sorry, but Lenny Harris should never, ever pinch hit for a position player with the game on the line. He was never a good everyday player to begin with and now he's one of the oldest players in the majors. It's just crazy. Oh well, back behind the Phillies again.
  2. I'm just praying it doesn't rain next Saturday or Sunday. If it rains on Saturday, only graduates are allowed to see Bill Clinton give the convocation speach, so my parents are going to drive all the way up to Ithaca and not get to see him speak. Also, if it rains on Sunday, my girlfriend can't go to the ceremony because we only have two severe weather indoor tickets. As of now, there's a 50% chance of rain for next weekend, but it's still too early to tell. Keeping my fingers crossed.

  4. Huh? Have you ever looked at Pujols' numbers? Even once? At this stage in his career he's towards the top of every statistical category and has a chance to be one of the greatest players ever. Yes. But Casey is having a better season thus far and that's what I was saying. Of course Pujols has had a great career thus far, no one is denying that. Calm the fuck down. Right.

  7. To be fair, some good movies have won the Palm D'orr, most notably Pulp Fiction. It doesn't have to be a super artsy movie.

    Ban Anglesault?

I dunno if I agree with this. It's just something to do. Maybe if you post 50 times a day, but if you post once or twice, it hardly means it cancels out everything else you do straight into "Don't have a life" territory.
  9. Real World. Nothing to do and you're totally babied.

The humor is smart. It's not like fart, fart, burp humor that's meant for kids to enjoy. So, yes, in that way they are smart animated movies. The jokes are carefully crafted to make kids laugh but add something that they don't understand that will get a chuckle out of adults. Of course I think they are good, but I do also think they are smart. There are layers of subtle humor in a lot of the Pixar movies that 75% of hollywood could never even dream of creating.
  12. FYI, today is the season debut of TWIB, before Fox game of the week. It's already over if you had a 1 o'clock game, but it's on at 3:30 for me, because unforunately I am still in NY and we got the Yankees game (like it's not already on 4 other channels). Dontrelle Willis and Josh Beckett host. EDIT : TWIB = This week in baseball, for the 3 of you who probably didn't already know that.
  13. Anybody graduating this year? (or have already done so?) If so, congrats. I graduate next Sunday, and my grad speaker is Bill Clinton, so that should be cool. I'm certainly looking forward to it. Usually it's a long and boring process, especially when family becomes involved, but it's still a nice milestone.
  14. This is from last night's win against Arizona. Look at Hee Seop Choi's face. Anybody else think that Juan Pierre and Dontrelle Willis include him in their posse, and he's the really awkward Korean member? I can totally see it happening. Driving in the car blasting rap music, playing dominos, and Choi just tags a long with this goofy grin on his face? Hey, I honestly think one of the reasons Armando Benitez is doing so well is because of Pierre/Willis. I read an article that said the most nervous he's been this season is in the domino games in the clubhouse. And I think we can all agree that if the Marlins win another series, Juan Pierre shouldn't be allowed to rap at the victory parade. That was just brutal.

    Shrek 2

I stopped reading after this. A perfect example of when trying to be funny goes horribly wrong. If you've seen the movies, which I highly doubt, your opinion is in the far, far minority. I think you're just trying to be cool...and unfortunately failed miserably.

    Where's the love......

I second that Lyle Overbay nomination. Unforunately I had him on my fantasy team LAST year. I knew he'd be good.
  17. Not really a TWIB subject, but I don't think it deserves its own thread. Ben Petrick, former Rockies catcher retired today at 27 because he's been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Certainly wish the best of luck to him. He plans to go back to college and be a HS Coach. Noble intentions indeed.

    The Devil

Dan Shanoff is on today, the stupid fucker that writes the Daily Quickie on Page 2. After the Marlins eliminated his precious little Cubs, he took jabs at them throughout the entire World Series and a week or so afterwards, that weren't even accurate. Before Series: Yanks will wipe the floor with the Marlins. They don't have what it takes. After Game Six: Well, talent doesn't always win the series. Just things like that. I want to tune in just so I can see what my least favorite internet sports writer looks like.

    Shrek 2

I have to admit, off the bat, that I'm a sucker for smart animated movies like Toy Story, Finding Nemo. Judging from the previews of this movie, I didn't think it was going to be as good as the first, just a cute way to pass an hour and a half. I was wrong. Shrek 2 is probably the funniest animated movie I have ever had the priviledge of watching in my life, and that's saying a lot considering how much I love the genre. I'm not sure if it warrants spoilers, but for anyone who doesn't want any jokes ruined, I'll use the red text. First of all, when Pinocchio tried to save Shrek, Donkey and Puss from the tower Mission Impossible style. Which lead to this exchange... Donkey: Tell a lie, say anything...like, I dunno, I'm wearing women's underpants. Pinocchio: I'm, uh, wearing women's underpants. *nose doesn't grow* Donkey: You aren't, are you? Gingerbread man: It's a THONG! *snap* Not to mention the entire character of Puss in Boots, being quite possibly the greatest character in an animated movie. Everything he said or did was funny in some way, especially the throwaway stuff. Like all 3 of them sitting at the bar and him randomingly down a shot of something and saying "I Hate Mondays." Or when Donkey calls him a low rate hitman he just hisses at him and while the movie focuses in on Shrek and Donkey in the front, he calmly puts his hat on and walks out of the scene. Just a great great character. And one of the coolest things... KNIGHTS, the medieval version of COPS. They corner Puss in Boots and the Knight is like..."We got cat-nip" and pulls out a dime bag. Puss: That's, uh, not mine. Also, the giant gingerbread man...falling to his death and saying to the little gingerbread man in the giant sloth voice. BEEEE GOOOOD. Everything about this movie worked, despite what you might think from the previews. So if you liked the first one, or animated movies in general. I give it the highest recommendation to see. Anyone else see it? Thoughts?
  20. Astros loaded the bases in the top of the 8th, but (GASP!) Mr. Reliable Armando Benitez came in with 2 outs and K'd Lance Berkman looking. His ERA is now 0.38 barring the 9th of this game.

  22. I studied abroad in Melbourne for six months, and we watched it for one of my classes. I love the movie, I think it's hilarious. I even showed it to my girlfriend, who has never been to Australia and she found it to be a really funny movie. And then Coco had a son. We named it "Son of Coco". I also saw Garage Days when I was over there, about the band that wants to play a festival and it turns out they are really terrible. I thought it was pretty funny, and it has an August US DVD release date, so I'll be picking that up as well. I think the humor in the Castle is easier to get if you've been to/live in Australia but it's funny for everyone nonetheless.
  23. Wow, glad I got to it before it was removed. What did the guy yell that caused Eddie to drop the mic and laugh like crazy? I couldn't make it out. Anyone know?
  24. Holy Crap, I clicked that link and it said that Eric Bana was in the Castle. I didn't remember him, so I threw in the DVD to check, and sure enough he's the kickboxing husband. Damn, I didn't realize. So I do own some Eric Bana comedy, I guess making me one of the few Americans.
  25. I couldn't disagree with this more, Al. Of course, it's true that based on their play the Marlins should have a worse record than they do. But I don't look at it like they are coming back to earth. They just aren't playing to their potential right now. Take a stroll through the lineup. I know tables get messed up, so the stats are listed in the order of BA, OBP, SLG, OPS Luis Castillo: .239 .310 .283 .592 Alex Gonzalez: .200 .224 .338 .562 Jeff Conine: .260 .300 .366 .666 Ramon Castro: .139 .200 .266 .466 Now look at career numbers: Castillo: .290 .365 .352 .717 Gonzalez: .242 .288 .386 .674 Conine: .287 .348 .451 .799 Castro: .216 .294 .370 .664 So, on any given night 4/9 Marlins entire Starting Lineup is playing so well below what they are capable of, is it any wonder that no runs are being scored? I don't think they are "coming back down to earth". I think they have nowhere to go but up. It can't get any worse than this, especially for these 4. June 2 vs. NYM I think is when the Marlins will turn it around for the rest of the season. That's AJ Burnett's return, and I think it's the going to save the season. Enough, hopefully, that a quality catcher can be traded for by the trade deadline, because this Castro/Redman platoon is a disaster.
