The Old School questions thread

I hear that Men on a Mission got an unplanned title reign in 1994 when their opponents couldn't kick out of Mabel's pin, is that true?

I don't think it's been confirmed but there is a story about Jacques being legit knocked out and not being able to kick out before the 3-count.

Not sure if I buy the story. They were doing a European tour and it would make total sense to have a quickie title run to pop the crowd.

I heard that Jacques wasn't knocked out, it was Mabel who couldn't physically lift himself off after a big splash....

I ask because I just watched a Best of WWE 2002 tape, including the Undertaker vs Jeff Hardy ladder match. When Hardy is reaching for the title, I've always wondered what the repercussions would have been if Hardy had thought "Screw it" and unhooked the title to win the match, forcing the commentators (and WWE) to acknowledge it.

He would have had the shit beat out of him by all the boys in the back and then be blackballed from wrestling for life.

hmmm, i was just wondering about some things i remember as a youth watching wrestling, and this came to me. one week on superstars or wrestling challenge I think it was, there was a multi-tag team match with earthquake and a few heels vs. a few faces, and I can't remember who the faces where, but I know Tugboat was one of them. after the match, I think the heels won, and then tugboat all of a sudden goes inside when the heels are celebrating and joins them in celebration, then cementing a heel turn, and changing his name to typhoon. are these details correct? if not, can someone tell me what happened, and why the decision was made to turn him heel?

It was Tugboat & the Bushwhackers vs Earthquake the Nasty Boys. It's very cloudy, but from what I recall, Tugboat would keep turning around and playing to the crowd whenever one of the Bushwhackers would try to make a tag, and finally at the end he came in and splashed either one or both of them, and the heels won and they all celebrated together. This led to Disasters/Bushwhackers at SummerSlam in 91, where the Disasters squashed them and moved right on to a feud with LOD.

thanks for the info...

also another question. was the undertaker really injured when mabel and yokozuna "crushed" his face back in 1995? or was it just an angle? and if it was just an angle, why did the wwe think undertaker wearing a mask would increase interest? something new for the undertaker to do?

what was the purpose of the outsiders running the steiner brothers off the road in a car storyline? did the steiners want time off? and how did they shoot the footage, with stuntmen? i cant remember the scene exactly, but i cant tell if there were stunt people or not.

did eric bischoff get injured legit when nash powerbombed him through that great american bash table on the stage in 1996?

was the rock supposed to win the 2000 royal rumble without the controversy that surrounded it, when it was clear both of his feet hit the floor before big show? was it just bad camerawork and they decided to turn it into an angle?

what was the story about sapphire being bought by ted dibiase? i remember she noshowed for dusty, then came out with dibiase before or after his match with savage at the 1990 summerslam. what were the angles to lead up to this, and was it ever hinted she would join ted dibiase? and did she stick with him after the fact, or go back to dusty?

It was just an angle. Of course they used stuntmen.

No.

The angle played out pretty much as it was meant to. The only thing about it that didn't go as plan was that Rock wasn't meant to actually hit the floor.

After angle at Summerslam, I think Sapphire disappeared. I believe it then segued into the Dibiase vs Rhodes storyline.

there was lead up to it. Sapphire started receiveing gifts from a mystery admirer (like a fur coat and jewelery) at the ppv he revelaed it was Dibiase who was the giver and that he bought her. I belive she was never seen again (maybe Im wrong but I wasnt watching wrestling yet at that point)

BRUNO SAMMARTINO & GIANT BABA v TIGER JEET SINGH & UMANOSUKE UEDA- this was Bruno's original retirement match.

Did this take place in 1981 after the US match vs Steele?

Just as a FYI, she was w/ DiBiase briefly afterwards but was phased away rather quickly.

He was late all the time, and because he was on a last chance deal he got fired. It also didn't help that nobody likes him. He's just a complete prick.

I was watching The Dream Team Vs The Million Dollar Team from Survivor Series 90 on WWE 24/7 Online and when The Hart Foundation enter, Roddy and Gorilla mention that one of Bret's brother's, Dean passed away the day before. Was Dean a non-wrestling Hart brother? How did he pass?

Did they ever stick all of the 2001 "Desire" videos on any DVD release? Like SSeries 01 since that was the PPV that culmanated all the storylines for that year.

Dean wrestled a bit for Stampede in the 70s and 80s, but never for any of the big promotions. He died of kidney failure on November 21, 1990.

I just finished watching Wrestling With Shadows again, and one family member is slipping my mind: who is the fourth Hart brother-in-law?

I know the other three are Davey Boy, Neidhart and Brakkus.

I think his name is B.J. Anis, he's Teddy Hart's father (who's real last name is also Anis).

He may be the one who had another son who got sick and died suddenly (Bret mentioned him in his '96 WWF comeback promo).

i was just watching halloween havoc 1999, and the whole sting/hogan stuff. i don't remember reading anything on the internet about what happened, so maybe someone can inform me. It looked obviously planned as Hogan said "I'm gonna lay down" before the camera panned away from him...so I was just wondering what the whole deal with this was...

It was another one of Vince Russo’s pathetic attempts at a worked shoot, that not only failed miserably, as does everything he tries, but pretty well turned off the casual PPV buyers. It was partially meant to play off of Hogan’s rep for being uncooperative; they even had Gene Okerlund ask Hogan about ‘internet talk’ on a Nitro leading up to the PPV, and Hogan acted like Okerlund wasn’t meant to ask about that and briefly said something about it before walking off. On the way out of the building that night he ‘just happened’ to bump into Bulbous Bob Ryder and gave an on-line interview where he acted like the whole thing was a shoot and he might not even show up at Halloween Havoc. At the PPV, the whole deal went down as you saw it, and they immediately went to a video package for the Goldberg vs. Sid match to try and make it seem like what happened wasn’t meant to happen. The other reason for the angle was that Hogan’s already waning drawing power was slipping even further, and Hogan wanted to do what he always does when this happens, which is take a vacation, wait for ratings to drop even more, and then come back after a few months to get a big crowd pop and when his return spikes the ratings for that one night claim that he’s causing a turnaround in business and then use that to get even more power. This also led to the worst singles title tournament of modern times, where almost every match was bad and also had interference, showing, as if there was any doubt, that Vince Russo couldn't book a fart at Taco Bell, let alone a title tournament.

I know for certain that Dynamite was never married to a Hart daughter. If the guy that was Brakkus for about 10 minutes in '98 WWF is/was a Hart in-law, that's news to me.

1> Where does mick Foley's heat with marc Mero stem from? Just the fact that Mero signed a huge WWF deal in 96 and Foley got a minor one despite a history of working on top of ECW and WCW?

2> How did Bret hart go from screwing over Hogan in Dec 97 at Starcade to Wrestling Ric Flair on PPV the following month? Was their a storyline tie in?

1. You basically got it right there. In his book he talks about that, Mick though didnt really hate Mero he just resented the fact the he wa making more money then him when he was putting on better matches and his body on the line (also was the case back in wcw when mero as johnny b badd was making way more money then foley as cactus jack), plus later in the WWF they wanted him to work a progarm with Mero twice (once in 96 with the Marlena and Sable lesbian aborted angle starting it and was to lead to Sable and Meor breaking up and her joinign Mankind and Paul Bearers strange "family", then later post WM 14, which fortunately was changed to the Austin feud, due to Steves request IIRC)

2. As I recall, Flair basically confronted Bret in the ring one time on Nitro and wanted to wrestle him again, it lead to a bit of playful rivalry between the 2 over who was the best. It wasn't really a feud and had nothing to do with Starrcade (except that Bret was established as a face by turning down the nWo and helping Sting)
