The Hip are simply put it, Canada's own. No one else. To capture plenty of rock fans in Canada, and embrased them as their own, is not an easy task. Canadian bands now a days see the tragically hip, being one of the best rock acts emerge in Canada, stay Canadian, and are proud that they get hardly any success and attention around the world.

Guest Smell the ratings!!!

trying to draw a line between genius and insanity can be quite tricky.

I like Weezer, Tool, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Radiohead. I think the're all overrated, especially if you're counting crap like Rolling Stone or VH1. But I think the're all very good bands that deserve at least part of all the love they get.

A band like Weezer would be considered overrated if you went by how many people like them on the board...but nationaly they're not really big enough to be overrated.

Where as Linkin Park...

See I think he was trying to use the bands most popular on this board. We all know Linkin Park is an over-rated tripe of a band, and almost 90% of "Pop" Music is.

there wouldn't be much sport in putting total crap bands in the poll. except metallica.

of course, no one actually admits to liking Linkin Park, so I guess they aren't that overrated.

Where are the Beatles on this?!  They are the most overrated pieces of crap I have ever heard.

because that would require things like reasons. which, in the wake of 'revolver' and 'abbey road', tend to kind of not exist.

however, 'sgt pepper' is probably one of the most overrated album out there.

I'll say this much about The Beatles, though..for every great song they put out, they put out a bad one.

Both. I happen to find their "She loves you, yeah yeah yeah." Harmless pop chestnuts to be pretty irritating, and as much as I love stuff like "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" and "A Day in the Life" it seems like there's always a "Happy Birthday" or "Ob La Di" right around the corner.

I concur. It is a very good album, but I guess you just had to be there when it first came out to be totally amazed by it, I guess. Maybe because I had listened to DSotM, WWYH, and The Wall prior to Sgt. Pepper, it didn't seem as huge.

By the way, BIGGEST FUCKING OVERRATED BAND IS PHISH. Seriously.

I'd have to disagree with Nirvana being so high, but I voted for Radiohead, even though I like some of their music.

Now why couldn't they just release a merry jaunt called "Corpsegutting Christmas" and bring us all together? Fuckin' Beatles.

Brutal Beatles? What a concept...

Hey gtd, what's your 5 favorite Beatles tracks...Necrobucket needs a good medley.

I can't believe I didn't mention this, let alone anyone else..but back on topic..The Grateful Fucking Dead. I don't think they have one song I can tolerate, and everything sounds like the exact same uninspired bland jamming while the drugs run their course.

let's see..I'll take the final chord from A Day in The Life, and three seconds each of the other songs while screaming "Happiness is a Warm Gun."

All on a bass guitar..except for the chord, that'll have to be a sample.

The Beatles career...ten years (roundabout) in ten seconds.

the Pixies - talk about an audio root canal, wow!

...Yeah, well fuck you too.

Some of the Pixies' earlier stuff is a little screechy and raw, but that's kind of the point, so it's basically just a matter of liking that or not in that case. But aside from that, "Doolittle," "Surfa Rosa," and "Bossanova" are all bloody amazing, and while some people joke about "Trompe Le Monde" being Frank Black's first solo album, it's pretty rockin' as well.

The thing I love about the Pixies though, is that if someone doesn't like one of their songs, then they still have about 90 others that (mostly) sound completely different.

Now die. Pixies 4 Lyfe. :)

*goes back into hole*

I voted for Pink Floyd. I have simply never, EVER gotten the huge love of Pink Floyd. Their stuff is just boring as hell to me. Then again, I'm not a drug addict so maybe I am missing out on being stoned and listening to Dark Side of the Moon.

I also find Radiohead overrated but since I do have one of their CDs I went with Floyd.

What is with with all the Nirvana hate? I think it's mostly due to the 90s being out of style right now, just as much as hair bands and the like were 10 years ago. Mark my words, in another 10 years when there is a retro 90s movement Nirvana will be fashionable again.

Krist Novaselic was not a half decent bass player

Dave Grohl drumming isn't anything special.

and Kurt is not a great song writer, or guitarist, or a vocalist. He was upstage by almost any one else from the Grunge era.

Did I mention how bad they were live.

I will admit that Nirvana's live stuff varies wildly in quality. Particularly the stuff on Nevermind, which makes me wonder how strong it would have been without Butch Vig's production.

That said, you can't measure a band in terms of "this guy was a crappy bassist." I mean, if you do that the Beatles wouldn't be a real great band. No one was real amazing on their instruments and Ringo was quite a mediocre drummer. Conversely, Led Zeppelin has one of the best guitarists and drummers I've ever heard...yet not a lot of their actual songs click with me.

There are a couple of things I disagree with. First, Dave Grohl is a very good drummer...my god, take away his drumming and In Utero would fall apart into chaotic feedback. Also, Cobain is underrated as a vocalist to anyone who has heard numerous Nirvana CDs. Yeah he does the yelling and screaming stuff, but has numerous styles to fit different material.
