Thesmartmarks Halloween Horror Movie Tournament

Recommended Posts

For the first time in SmartMarks history, 64 horror movies will battle one another to find out which of them has the right to be called the greatest ever!

I picked the 64. If your favorite isn't included, sorry. You'll also notice some dogs in there, but it's a freakin' horror movie tournament, you can't expect top-notch quality.

No "classic" horror films. Only "modern" movies included. Still confused? Read this: http://www.esplatter.com/reviewsotos/stellar_66.htm It was written by the best horror movie webmaster on the net, and the summary at the top about his list basically sums up the criteria for the tourney.

Only vote once, vote on every matchup, you guys have voted in enough tourneys to know the rules.

In the event of a tie, I will use the higher scored movie from the Internet Movie Database, for lack of anything better to use.

The winners will be announced every Friday and the next round will start in the same thread. The winner will be announced on Halloween. Pretty creepy, huh?

Now, "Let's get it on!!!"

Why? It's not like there is any major movies missing or anything. And I've already made it so the round of 64 is done this week, the round of 32 the next, etc. It all fits in quite nicely with the championship match being decided the week of Halloween.

I have to take issue with there being no classic Hammer or Universal flicks on here. No Dracula, Frankenstein, Mummy. A lot of marginal horror films and all these sequels you really don't need. Trim the sequels, add more older stuff and this is fine.

You're missing one of personal favorite horror flicks, The Others. Granted, it was more of a thriller, but there was some horror in it.

The Others is definitly a horror movie, and a pretty creppy one at that.

The Others is good, but not really a "true" horror film. But neither is Army of Darkness, even though it's in a "true? horror trilogy. Confused yet?

I really didn't want to include the old Hammer or Universal horror movies, because I wanted to do more modern ones. If someone was to help, we could do a mini (16) tourney with older movies a couple weeks before Halloween. I was thinking about doing a nomination thread, but that ultimately leaves off more films than if one person picked them. Besides if you just used the first 64 nominees, than someone could just post ten to fifteen and only a few people would need to nominate. Then if you had each person pick one, it would be unlikely that 64 people would reply. I really didn't think I left any major ones out. The two biggest off the top of my head were "Pumpkinhead" and "Last House on the Left." I really don't see either one of those making it past the second round. Sorry if I disappointed some of you.

First off, you let people only pick 2-3 movies each.

Second, atleast the posters got to pick. There are plenty of movies that are off of this, but we get the movies YOU want.

I'd say we scrap this one, and have people nominate movies.

I'm not picking between NoES 4 and Dead Alive, I haven't seen NoES 4 and Dead Alive is one of the worst movies I've ever seen

Near Dark

What's with all the sequils? You could've ditched all the Halloween, NoES and F13s except the original and added Demons, Kaïro, Last House on the Left, Se7en, The Ring/Ringu, Silence Of the Lambs, Suicide Circle and Uzumaki

Whoever mentioned Demons... well yeah, I can't remember every good horror flick. As for all the sequels, there are actually people out there who like some of them, and the possibility of them being the proverbial "cinderella" team, IMO, makes it more interesting. Another thing about poster nominations: You get movies nobody's ever heard of. I've watched just as many horror movies as anybody on here, and even I've never heard of Kairo, Suicide Circle, and Uzumaki. Jaws, Poltergeist, the Ring, etc. are PG-13, which automatically eliminates them. I categorize them as suspense/thriller kind of stuff, not horror.

Yes, Scream is a horror movie.

I threw a couple sci-fi/horror movies (Alien, The Thing) on there for variety, but Aliens was excluded for no particular reason. But then if I was going for variety, why all the shitty sequels? Sometimes I confuse even myself.

Silence of the Lambs and Seven are crime/mystery films. Nothing really horrific about them.

Thanks for the feedback, even though not all of it is positive. Thanks to all those whove posted their picks.

Hey, Vern Gagne, is that former President James K. Polk in your sig. If so, any particular reason why you have him there? Any interest in history, or is there some kind of hidden joke with it or something.
