Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2003 I remember at school one of my friends had caught an episode of "The Best Damn Sports Show Period" and it was an episode that had Tito Ortiz in it. He had basically called out Mike Tyson and my friend had said he was an idiot since Tyson would rock him. When I started to use logic and tell him that Ortiz would beat down Tyson he just said "UFC? That shit's gay." That's just one example. I'm sure others have had to deal with it as well, so how do you respond? I was just wondering because this topic is sort of taboo (and I use the term loosely) around valid MMA discussion, yet I'm sure most of you have heard it. I heard it from someone else believe it or not, people are that stupid. Obviously Tyson would beat Ortiz in a boxing match, I never denied that. But that's like saying I could beat Shaq in a free-throw competition. Does that make me a better basketball player? Obviously not, which is my point when discussing MMA and Boxing. If you wanted to go by a "street fight" as you like to put it, Ortiz would still rock him because he would just take him down and sub him. I hate "street fight" stories in general because they're used as substantial facts when it's nothing more than bullshit. Bas Rutten has a good quote regarding street fights but I can't get to it right now. I was prompted to make the thread because I read an article on ESPN where Simmons felt that the UFC would never go anywhere unless they made it more striking-oriented and got rid of the wrestling as no one would want to see two guys roll on the mat. Ask any fighter who they'd like to fight and Tyson is on the top of that list. It should be noted that MMA fighters are the most shameless (self) promoters and will do anything for a buck - and anything with Tyson would be big bucks. Plus, MMA wants to trump boxing, they want to make it obselete, they want to steal its glory, they want to be the #1 fight-sport in the world - and what better way of doing that is by owning the most recognized boxer on the planet? I think it will be at least a few months before we see Tyson in the ring against a seasoned K-1 fighter like Hoost, LeBanner, or Sapp. That reminds me, next Saturday is the K-1 PPV, and it looks rockin'! When someone finds out I take judo and asks if I'm any good, my response is that I'm a 1st degree green belt. I think I'm competent but compared with brown belts, black belts or even 2nd degree green belts, I'm not that good. Then I usually hear "judo CHOP!" (Austin Powers) Then when they find out it's sort of like amateur wrestling when do do Ne Waza (ground fighting) you listen to how it looks gay. I know that I could probably throw him on his ass with Osotogari before he knew what hit him, or pop on a juji-gatame and leave him in tears. But it's what you have to deal with from someone ignorant on the subject. A girl I like, (I'd love to call her my g/f, but its not official yet) gets on me for watching wrestling and I say "at least it's not porno". It's a lot like Tough Enough at first, you have to learn the proper way to take back falls, and different rolls, then you gradually learn some throwing techniques and Ne Waza (ground techniques). Improvement is very gradual, you won't realize how much you've improved untill you're doing something and it will just hit you, that you've gotten really good at this. I'd like to think that if I was in a situation that I could probably use my judo to protect myself. I've got a few good throws that I could use in a real life encounter. Chokes and stuff is a whole other ball game though and I don't think anyone would use a choke in a real life situation only because of how prone you are to being attacked while applying it. The ranks go as follows 1. no belt 2. 4 degrees of white belt 3. 3 degrees of green belt 4. 3 degrees of brown belt 5. 10 degrees of black belt My teacher has over 35 years and he's only a fifth degree black belt Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2003 Muay Thai, Wrestling and JJ are the "Big 3" to train in - you at least have to know how to defend against all 3. Judo seems to be on the rise with the success of Karo and Yoshida - but if you know Wrestling and JJ you'd be fine without it. But ya gotta know how to defend takedowns, defend submissions, and block strikes. When you look at successful fighters today, they at least have 1 specialty, 1 worked on, and 1 other in development. RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2003 Well essentially, if you are specialized in one thing and know how to defend against the Big 3, then you neutralize the striking, submissions and takedowns and finish with your specialization. Cro Cop right now is training in BJJ and Wrestling, but it's not to takedown and tap out Fedor, it's to avoid getting takendown and tapped out - so he can keep it on his feet where he can land a highkick or something. Then there's fighters like Rampage who is especially well-rounded - he can KO (Abidi, Randleman), he can takedown (Satake, Vov), and he can submit (some GC dude ). Not only that, but he can block strikes, defend takedowns, and get out of submissions with the best of them (Abidi in K-1/Vov at Pride 22, Randleman at Pride 25, and Bustamante at the GP).
