Could you pass 8th Grade Math?

Recommended Posts

Noticed this link after sending an e-mail.

I never considered myself particularly good at math, so I expected to do lousy. I got 9 out of 10 so I'm happy, despite being out of high school for quite some time and not having many math couses that brought some of the featured stuff up.

Remember, kiddies...

Spoiler (Highlight to Read):

Pythagorus is your friend, and the measurement of angles A+B+C = 180 degrees.

So close to a perfect score...surface area, not volume, dummy *bonks self*.

I was horrible but the system got me passed because really in Middle school all you have to do is show up.

I gave up on Question 3 since the answer I got twice was not a choice. Keep in mind, I didn't use a calculator.

...this is American (Illinois State to be more precise) grade 8 math?

...is it wrong for me to admit I was doing this stuff in grade 7? Even worse, this is the easy stuff at grade 7. I mean, I was learning algebra and higher crap than this at grade 7.

Actually, looking at all the other questions, most of this is like grade 6 math. Wow... Simply wow. This is grade 8 math? Geez, I'd be a wizard down there.

7/10 because I read three questions wrong. Two dealing with Surface Area (I thought depth), and the other because I didn't take into account the -5 on the triangle.

10/10 here too

10/10, but then I have a bachelor's degree in math.

Sweet, I'm in my junior year towards a BS in math. Where'd you go?

Flik: Naw, doesn't sound surprising. I learned it early myself, but I was going to a private school until I went on to high school. It may vary from school to school and state to state, natch. Except for the diagrams and stuff, it was very easy, especially ones requiring only simple multiplication and division.

Perhaps they intentionally gave an early quiz which didn't require us to know too many complicated formulas.

And yet you got 7/10. HA!!

10/10 . . . but then I'm studying for my Final year High School Maths, at Extension 2 level (which for none-Australian-NewSouthWalesians is basically some Uni Maths at High School)

But it was tricky doing all that feet and inches mumbo bajumbo. Forgot you all still use that system.

I got a seven out of ten for being a dumb ass and not fully reading the question.

The stupid fucking pictures on the stupid fucking problems still won't load for me. What's the deal?

But looking at the test, damn, they've got it easy in Illinois. Everyone makes fun of Tennessee's educational programs, but here we were way past this shit in 8th grade, on into algebra. Hell, I even knew a freshman who took pre-calculus one time. This kiddie test is way below average difficulty for its claimed level.

8/10. The surface area problems proved to be my bane.

Math was always my weakest subject. I couldn't seem to get more than a high B, low A.

At least I always kicked major ass in the verbal.

9 out of 10. I am shocked. I only had no clue whatsoever on the last question.

I sucked at math in high school. I only passed because my teacher was a moron. She'd give you half credit for just putting down an answer on tests, so, as long as I had a few correct, I did fine. Plus, the majority of the grade was for writing down notes and homework assignments even if you had no clue what you were doing on them. All in all, that usually added up to an easy B for me. I hate math.

7/10. I'm shocked I did that well actually, math is/was my worst subject. I got the ones that everyone is having a problem with right, though and got a bunch of easy ones wrong.

Math. Bleh.

10/10, but no degree in math. And 8th grade was a long time ago.

EDIT: the congruent angles question was really the only one that gave me pause. I forgot what congruent angles meant, but I was able to reason it out.

I'm getting my bachelor's in math right now, so anything less would be shameful.

Likewise. I actually had to think about it for a second, until the meaning of "incongruous," which is a word I like, came to mind. It's weird that I can still recall procedures and formulas, but forget a simple definition.

Btw, I didn't use a calculator, either.

You figured out the square root of 520,000 without using a calculator?

Color me impressed.

Numeric approximation

520,000 = 52 * 100²

sqrt(520,000) = sqrt(52) * 100

sqrt(52) will be a bit higher than 7, so the sqrt(520,000) will be a bit higher than 700 (about 721 to be exact)

A bit more work than you'd probably want to do (given that calculator use is pretty much automatic for kiddies these days), but that's how you'd do it without one

That's not too bad.

Color me no longer impressed.
