Fact or Fiction

linda_cohn.jpg

-- It's time once again for Fact or Fiction, we have two analysts here tonight to answer questions regarding SFBL at the All-Star Break. 81 games gone, 81 games to go, and these two men are going to tackle the tough questions. They are:

stark.jpg

-- Jayson Stark...

-- Hello, Linda.

kruk.jpg

-- and John Kruk.

-- Hi, Linda, Jayson.

LC: Let's get things rolling. Fact or Fiction: Neall Isaacson will break the single season homerun record of 63 by J.C. Morello in 2013.

JS: This is definitely a FACT, Linda. Columbus seems to have a comfortable lead in the North, and that will encourage Isaacson to be a little bit more losse with the bat, and when Isaacson gets comfortable, pitchers watch a lot of their balls leave the park. It won't be by much, but Isaacson will definitely top Morello's mark.

JK: Well, Jayson, I have to say FICTION. It's true that Columbus, as a team, are hitting balls out of the park at an alarming rate. But 32 homeruns at the break isn't going to be enough for Isaacson. No one should be counting New Jersey out at this point, either. I see them putting the heat on Columbus towards the end of the season, and like Jayson said, that will take Isaacson out of that comfort that he would otherwise enjoy. Neall isn't much of a team player, but he at least understands that putting the team before the single-season homerun record will earn him his second championship ring.

LC: Alright, Fact or Fiction: The West champions will have a winning record at the end of the season.

JS: FICTION. Whoever wins the West should consider themselves lucky to even be in the playoffs. First place in the West would be a tie for last in the East. If I were any of the teams in the West, I would start preparing for what would happen on the off-chance they actually made the playoffs and have to face some big boys such as New York or Philadelphia. That's where the real talent is, and it'll show in the postseason.

JK: I agree with Jayson, this is FICTION. Andres Cifuentes is the only player making any waves in the West, as he might have a genuine shot at a 20-win season this year. Of course, his ERA is less than pristine, which only further re-enforces the fact that this division will not be producing a league champion this year. I'd definitely say that the winner of the South, which is almost as bad as the West, will have a winning record, but that's simply because the teams in the South are very hungry.

LC: Speaking of the South, John--Fact or Fiction: This is the New Orleans Crunk Machine's year to become the first expansion team to enter the playoffs.

JS: This one is a FACT, Linda. New Orleans has made so many big moves in the past few months, and they really have something to show for it. The addition of Tipsy Gesner and Robert Henderson, who are both destined to be in the Hall of Fame, has taken this team out of the gutter faster than anyone could have predicted. I don't think they'll get a ring this year, but they've got what it takes to come out on top over teams like Jacksonville in the South.

JK: I disagree again this time around. FICTION, you can't ignore the kind of stranglehold that Jacksonville has on the South. They've had it since the division was comprised of five teams. And even though Jacksonville's stats are not up to snuff, that will not stop this team. That's the key word. Team. They are a family kind of team that you only get when the right people click together. They traded away Paco Fernandez and got some fine players in return, and Winston Ghandi, who has always been a mainstay, will keep this team together to the postseason.

LC: Going back to individual players, Fact or Fiction: Robert Henderson will eventually win the Triple Crown.

JS: This one is FICTION, Linda. The fact that this kid seemed to have hit his peak in 2014 is nothing but bad news. This kid is a phenom, but he's switched to more of a homerun attack then actually putting the bat on the ball this year, and I'll be honest and say that I don't think he'll even have another .400 season. The best years have passed Big Red, plain and simple.

JK: What? This is FACT! Jayson, how can you say that about Henderson! He hasn't hit his peak yet, the man is still developing! If anything, there's no where to go but up, still! Every batter has an off year, and this might be one of those off-years. I never hit 25 homeruns in the first half of an off year though, which makes me think that Henderson is still waiting for that prime to really kick in. And when it does, he's going to be shattering records left and right. Chew on your foot, Jayson, the best is yet to come with Henderson.

LC: Final question about the SFBL players--Fact or Fiction: At age 20, Timothy Marsch will win the batting title in the East-West.

JS: FACT. Marsch has impressed me this first half of the season, Linda. Injuries have plagued him in his first two seasons with the Oklahoma Twisters, but he really has had a breakthrough season this year, and things are looking up for the second half. He's feeling good about himself, and the team seems to be getting a boost from his good play, as the Twisters are definitely looking at having a .500 or better record by the end of the season. Oklahoma isn't quite to the point that New Orleans is right now, but with Marsch's help, they will get there.

JK: Marsch does seem to be the next big thing, but I have to say FICTION. Unlike the North-South, the batting race in the East-West is very tight, with the other four batters in the top 5 within .030 of Marsch. A lot can happen in those final 81 games, hell, Marsch could end up getting injured again! For that reason, I'm tempted to go with someone more reliable as the batting champion this year, likely Jose Etenza. Marsch will see better years than this.

LC: Well, thank both of you for this installment of Fact or Fiction. Final question; any predictions for who will win it all this year?

JS: The fans seem to have lost a lot of hope, but this definitely seems like Columbus' year. Isaacson's performance will bring the fans back to root the Pride on, and from there, there's no telling what these guys can do.

JK: I'm looking at New York to return to the championship and take it over Columbus in the finals. They're a slow team on the basepaths and they do tend to let some balls out of the park, but other than that, they can simply not be denied of a championship at this point. They've got talent on offense and defense, and they definitely have one of the best staffs in the SFBL. Columbus has the hitting, but New York has the total package, so they're my pick.

2017 SFBL All-Star Game

Another poor showing for the TSM players.

As for the game itself, the North-South attempted to come back late in the game after trailing 10-3 after five innings, but they couldn't complete the comeback and fell short, 10-8, to the East-West All-Stars.

Robert Henderson struck out three times, going 0-for-4 in total. Carlos DeSantis was involved in a double switch with Brett Smith, and only had one at-bat in the game, in which he struck out.

For the East-West, Timothy Marsch was the only TSM player to see playing time, and in his one at-bat, he reached on a fielding error by the pitcher. He was caught stealing second base, however, and did not come to the plate again.

Marvin Jenkins and Paco Fernandez were both left without playing time for the East-West All-Stars.

I got robbed, the tag missed, the ump needs new glasses. I caught him earlier during the game playing with himself. Didnt his mother ever tell him that it would make him go blind?

I feel good about having inspired something, however you didn't make Kruk look stupid enough by saying outlandish things. Remember, you have to try and stay in character for 3 people, which isn't always easy.

Kruk should have called me a winner like 3 times. And a leader.

I know, FS. As I was typing this, I suddenly realized that after being a fan of The Best Damn Sports Show Period for so long, I had suddenly forgotten how to be Kruk. And I've never heard Stark on ESPN before.

It was tough going.

Next season I might just have something like a "Stories To Watch For In The Second Half" kind of thing, where I don't have to be in a certain character.

Alright, let's talk turkey.

I've currently simulated up to the July 31st games. Once I sim past that day, the trading deadline.

As of right now, several trades have occured sending, if I remember correctly, four TSM players to new teams. None of those players are named Edward James.

So before I go on with the July recap, I'd like to ask Eddy J where he'd like to go, since he has not been dealt to a team yet, and if he doesn't get dealt on July 31st, he won't be dealt until next season.

Flik, I assume that you're looking for the team with the best chance, so here are the eight teams that would qualify for the playoffs if the season were to end today:

East

New York 62-42

Philadelphia 62-42

Boston 58-46

Central

Chicago 61-43

West

Los Angeles 49-55

North

Columbus 63-41

New Jersey 61-43

Central

Memphis 59-45

South

Jacksonville 56-48

Let me know what your decision is as soon as possible so I can get the dealing done and we can move on with the season and the players who were traded can see where they were dealt to.

I hope Adam West found his way to Oklahoma.

Oh yeah, almost forgot about that.

If Flyboy agrees to it, then we can have another deadline deal.

Trade between Las Vegas and Philadelphia :

Philadelphia gets :

3B Edward James

Las Vegas gets :

CF Mike Cannington

NOTE: This deal had to be one-for-one, as Cannington was the only player that Philadelphia could offer for Las Vegas since any other player they offered would be too much for their payroll.

...wasn't I drafted by Philly?

Yes, you were drafted by Philly in 2007, but the Freedom have never won a SFBL Championship.

Do we really need Flyboy's ok to trade for him? I mean his team is trying to get rid of him so I would think it would be just as good as a trade done by the CPU. If somebody is on the trading block in their rookie year it should be fine since they don't really have a team allegiance.

Of course if I was traded from Oklahoma and don't know about it then I don't want Flyboy going there. :P

For the sake of keeping West from going to Oklahoma, I should probably tell you in advance that indeed, you were one of the players that were traded.

Trade between New York and Oklahoma :

Oklahoma gets :

P Fidel Rubino

1B Shuko Yoshiaki

New York gets :

P Frigid Soul

And for future reference, yes, the TSM player needs to approve a trade. Absolutely. West was on the trading block, yes, but there was no guarantee that another team would've requested his services before the end of the trading deadline. It's bad enough that I'm allowing trades like the one that sent Edward James to Philly instead of letting the chips fall where they may.

Well then son of a bitch. I need to go and change my cap then.

Ok, hopefully I wound up in Boston and Jenkins joined me.

Wow....the West really DOES suck, doesn't it? Last I saw, I wasn't pitching up to snuff for them, so I shoulder a bit of the blame. I'm keeping the K's coming, but my ERA is still a tad high at 3.50.

As long as we make the playoffs, I'll be happy. You never know.

*cries because he's in NY*

Being a Boston fan this hurts...however they'll hopefully help me raise my numbers and I can just leave them in my FA season...which is like 3 or 4 seasons away...*cries more*

Edit: Evo, were the players I was traded for any good?

2017 SFBL All-Star Game

Marvin Jenkins and Paco Fernandez were both left without playing time for the East-West All-Stars.

How many times is this gonna happen?!?

2009 - selected, not sure if he played ?? (probably not).

2013 - selected, didn't get in the game

2014 - selected, didn't get in the game

2017 - selected, didn't get in the game

Its sort of like the "He can only make the playoffs every 7 years and then pitch really crappy" deal. (2007 and 2014 : 0-3 with a 7.23 ERA in the Postseason)

Awards/SFBL Players In The News:

Sunday, July 8th, 2017:

Chicago's Paco Fernandez hits for the cycle

NEW YORK - Paco Fernandez hits 'em where they ain't. New York certainly agrees as Chicago's third baseman unloaded four hits and hit for the cycle. A single in the 3rd off Cedric Rojas accounted for his 1st hit. In the 4th inning he unloaded a two-run triple off Rojas. In the 6th inning he belted a double off Honrio Delfierro. In the 8th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Danielin Dardar. That drive completed the cycle, as the New York crowd cheered in recognition of Paco's acheivement. Paco scored 3 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He is hitting .297 this season, with 11 homeruns and 57 RBI. On July 7th, 2017, Ramon Zapien was the last player to hit for the cycle.

Monday, July 9th, 2017:

Atlanta's Gonzales wins Player of the Week award

Atlanta's pitcher Giant Gonzales had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the North-South Player of the Week. Gonzales was overpowering all week long, going 1-1 with an ERA of 5.25. Along the way, he struck out nine batters in 12 innings pitched.

Monday, July 16th, 2017:

Frost (SEA) wins P.O.W. award

RJ Frost wins his 13th Player of the Week award. East-West pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. RJ went 14 for 30 (.467), while hitting one homerun and collecting 10 RBI. His season numbers are: .282 AVG, 96 hits, 18 doubles, one triple and 21 homeruns, along with 65 RBI and 57 runs scored. He's 7th in the East-West in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns!

Wednesday, July 18th, 2017:

Jonathan Dehn out for 5 weeks

COLUMBUS - Columbus' centerfielder Jonathan Dehn hurt himself in the fifth inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Jonathan Dehn will miss at least five weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Dehn was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, as Dehn has back spasms that will put him on the disabled list. His season numbers-to-date are: .249 AVG, 91 hits, 20 doubles, 11 triples and 10 taters, along with 51 RBI and 71 runs scored.

Monday, July 30th, 2017:

Frigid Soul out for 6 weeks

NEW YORK - When it rains, it pours. New York's right-hander Frigid Soul will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback as the Bums traded for Soul earlier in the day. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Montreal where he left the field in the fourth inning. The Bums' organization wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Soul had suffered a herniated disc in his back. This season Soul has compiled an ERA of 4.77, going 4-7 in 20 starts. He's fanned 82 batters while giving up 101 hits in 105 2/3 innings.

Tuesday, July 31st, 2017:

Eric LeBeau (CHA) will miss 8 weeks

CHARLOTTE - Charlotte's southpaw Eric LeBeau suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least eight weeks. In the fourth inning of the game against Atlanta he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, LeBeau was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed that LeBeau had fractured his elbow. Opposing players have hit .280 against Eric this season. While posting an ERA of 4.19, Eric has gone 6-11 in 23 starts, fanning 102 batters and walking 54. He has three complete games and one shutout this season.

So many injuries, so little time.

It's only a matter of time before I'm off for Ring of Honor, but when I return after midnight tonight, we'll talk about contract extensions for those players who need them, those who got them, and those who don't want them.

So, yeah. Enjoy.

...uh, Harley, I had asked Evo to trade you WITH me, but apparently that didn't go through. I thought he could only ship me over, hence why I said "ok".

Besides, your team is showing much success without my presence there. So you see, you'll kick ass now. Since I'm like the death to any team that has me.

Wow, tons of transactions. I can't fathom this game's penchant for having teams trade away young players so often, though, but meh.

So now it's possible I get to endure through Kostka's pain... interesting.

1) Dehn is currently still on the disabled list, after that point, I'll see what I can do (making Dehn DH, or something similar).

2) Contract extensions:

Oklahoma : Shiro Suzuki has been signed to a contract extension, $538,700 per year, for 3 years.

TSM players left unsigned:

Charlie Matthews (Is in his prime and would like to test the market)

Eric LeBeau (Charlotte is unwilling to pay the $7,390,000 salary over 6 years, even though they have plenty of money)

Joseph Corbin (Corbin is willing to take a major paycut, but Charlotte does not want to resign him)

Robert Henderson (Is in his prime and would like to test the market, his salary would likely greatly increase)

If any of these players would like to be resigned, it is possible. Otherwise, they will go on the free agent market.
