Study: College Costs Increase 40 Percent

Steady increases in the cost of going to college have worsened in recent years as cash-strapped states have cut back on education funding, according to a new report that says tuition and fees at the nation's four-year colleges are up more than 40 percent from a decade ago.

The College Board's annual Trends in College Pricing study, released Tuesday, revealed that public two- and four-year schools, which rely more on government money, have been particularly hard hit.

David Ward, the president of the American Council on Education — which represents the nation's leading higher education institutions — called the findings troublesome.

"We are in the middle of a very difficult period in financing higher education," Ward said in a statement. "I remain greatly concerned about the long-term viability of the social compact that has served students and families so well for more than 50 years."

Using inflation-adjusted dollars, the average cost of tuition and fees at state-supported four-years schools is now 47 percent higher than it was 10 years ago, the study said. The average cost of tuition and fees at private colleges and universities, also adjusted for inflation, has grown by 42 percent over the same period.

The College Board, a nonprofit that owns the SAT, said tuition for in-state students at four-year public campuses jumped 14.1 percent to $4,694 this fall. However, a dip in the price of room and board — assessed separately from tuition and fees — means that students living in residence halls are actually paying $10,636, only 9.8 percent more than they did in 2002-03.

The price hikes weren't limited to four-year state schools.

The study found that the average tuition and fees assessed by public two-year colleges went up by 13.8 percent to $1,905.

And it now costs $26,854 to attend a four-year, private school, including tuition, fees, room and board: that's up 5.7 percent from last year.

The report said that 60 percent of undergraduates are using financial aid packages to help pay for college. While student loans comprise a large portion of the aid, over $40 billion in state and federal grants that do not have to be repaid were distributed in 2002-03.

"It's critical that families realize a college education is still in reach because of financial aid," said Gaston Caperton, the president of the College Board.

HOW do you manage to start threads in the CE folder that belong here and threads that would be perfect for CE in the General Chat folder?

You are my hero! :P

Well, Ripper, by the title of the thread, it seems as though this should be in General Chat (but really could go in Current Events). Whereas the banana rapist story (geezus christ what is wrong with people?) should've gone here.

It's okay, though, Boo. We'll forgive you. *grin*

I can understand Boo's concern with starting threads in CE.

Anyway, onto the subject, because this is a topic that pisses me off.

Fuck these higher learning pinheads. I find it amazing that if universities are supposedly filled with the best and brightest teaching our children that they don't have enough financially sound people working there to balance a budget and live within their means.

You could pump millions upon millions of dollars into any university and it will never be enough. When I lived in Sappy Valley I was amazed at the amount of waste that went on, and their president still acted like the welfare queen of all welfare queens when asking the state legislature for more money, and then accusing anyone of being anti-Education when he didn't get everything he wanted.

He even basically told the state legislature that it was none of their business what PSU did with the money they received from the state. Fuck him and fuck PSU and fuck higher learning.

I swear if I ever were to go out in a blaze of glory, I’d do it at the steps of a university.

Jesse Ventura said it best years ago with a bunch of whiny little bitches complaining that it's too expensive to go to school: "If you're smart enough to get there, you're smart enough to find a way to pay for it."

Another story. Back when I was in Ohio, the University of Cincinnati was making threats that they'd have to raise tuition costs if they don't get their trough filled up with cash. HAHAHAHA. You bitches raise tuition anyway -- talk about an empty threat.

Whew. I feel better now...

OK, here's one.

Whenever my better half is sick we always have to get Ramen noodles, ginger ale and crackers. Well, a few years back she thought she was on her deathbed and bought a mega-size-jumbo pack of this crap. After eating about two packages she was better and didn't touch the rest of the noodles. Guess who had to eat them all?

Yep.

That's why I can't stand those 20-cent side dishes...

What flavor, if I may ask? :P

Roasted Chicken, which is strange because she doesn't like "real" chicken, but at this point I've stopped asking questions...

 ...sighs... Don't bother asking. It'll only cause pain, suffering and on the rare occassion (twice for me) a break up in a relationship.

...yes, I am pathetic. *hangs head*

6.5 years of "bliss" isn't going to come falling down due to a pack of noodles...

Meh... 6 months of dating did. But it turned into one of those "you do's and don'ts" things and escalated.

...sighs... I have no luck at all.

And tuition fees are getting to the point that the only way the poor man, like myself, will get an education, is by doing it the old fashion way.

Just doing it.

Umm....back to the tuition discussion.......

Yeah well we had to go through a tuition hike at OU. They said that the university was strapped for cash and we needed to rennovate some buildings and pay the teachers and such.......so what does that idiot president Boren do!?!? He starts planting more flower gardens! Yes the guy seems to waste all of our fucking money on flower gardens. I swear...we'd have more money at that school if we didn't have so many damn fountains and fancy flowers! Someone wrote an article in the school paper about how President Boren should be President of the US(HAHAHAHAHA!) because he would know what to do in Iraq. Yeah right...he'd probably turn it into a giant flower garden.

It happened to me.  Depo is nothing to my super sperm.

She got pregnant while on Depo? Holy fuck. It's like 99.9% effective.

97-98% actually. And whats even more odd was that she had been taking it for like year so that shit normally takes a year for it to even get out of you.

Every statistic I've seen said over 99% effective, and I did research on it before I ever got on it (and now I'm off, because I absolutely hated that shit; also, admittedly, I think most of the research that was released about Depo at the time was from the preliminary research and it seems now from what I've been hearing from people is that it isn't quite as effective as it was once thought to be). And yeah, it is supposed to stay in your body for six months to a year after you get off of it if you've been on it a year or longer. Then again, hell, I know someone who was late getting her Depo shot and is now 10 weeks pregnant, and she's been on it for at least two years.

That's why I've made my sperm community a sparsely populated, two-tailed, headless gaggle of inept jizz that could never find an egg if they tried. Viva la reproductive side effects.
