Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2003 Oh, I'm glad they at least picked a good song. "Growing On Me" is probably the best one on the album. Or maybe "Friday Night," which reminds me of a strangely self-conscious Morrissey. ... ::goes and listens to the Darkness::
Garth 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2003 I more partial to "Love on the rocks with no ice" of the album.
k thx 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2003 They've got videos for: I believe in a thing called love, Growing on me and their christmas song - Christmas time (don't let the bells end) Theres also at least two videos for "Get Your Hands Off Of My Woman". The one they released when it came out in Britain, which was basically them live with a few random backstage bits, and annother later video which was basically the same, but with more random bits obviously shot with a different camera. The first one was pre-spaceship, the second one might have the spaceship in it.
welshjerichomark 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2003 I watched their live show on MTV2 and it was F'n great. They're different to other bands out at the moment which is good.

I love "Friday Night," but Growing on Me" has to be one of the more annoying songs on the album, in my opinion. That "or am I growing on yoooou" background vocals bit really bugs me for some reason. My top three tracks would have to be "I Believe In a Thing Called Love," "Friday Night," and "Love on the Rocks with No Ice." All gloriously catchy and singable. Anyhow, when is the Darkness going to hit us with a full-on American tour? Their second album? It better be soon, because I'm awfully antsy to see them live. Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2003 "Growing On Me" sounds like Ric Ocasek produced it. Therefore, I love it. You make it sound like the Cars and I'll line up and buy whatever the hell you're serving.
Guest Random Hero Report post Posted December 16, 2003 I can't listen to any of their singles anymore, except for 'Get Your Hands Off My Woman' which I still really like. I'm not really fussed on them as a whole though, they're definitely overrated. Which isn't to say they aren't decent, just they would have to be Gods or something to justify the hype. 5_moves_of_doom 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2003 I can't listen to any of their singles anymore, except for 'Get Your Hands Off My Woman' which I still really like. I'm not really fussed on them as a whole though, they're definitely overrated. Which isn't to say they aren't decent, just they would have to be Gods or something to justify the hype. It's not that their music is necessarily Godly in quality that's the hype... as you said, it's decent (and then some, in my opinion, but not Godly;) it's the fact that basically the whole band gimmick is the whole hair metal revival, over the top, the actual band members are Gods thing. It's like Queen or Zeppelin. While I might prefer, say, the Pixies' music better than both, the Pixies lack the mere God-like presence of both bands. There's really nothing like Freddie Mercury live -- he seems almost inhuman. There's a natural charisma that just makes him seem so awesome. And basically, the Darkness is trying to reinact this. So far, they're succeeding quite admirably, even if "I Believe In a Thing Called Love" isn't quite as great as "This Thing Called Love." EDIT: Not sure if I found the right words to put that in, but I'm sure you've got some idea of what I mean throughout all of that pointless rambling.
Guest MissMattitude Report post Posted December 20, 2003 I like The Darkness however I am getting slightly sick of them. I can't listen to 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love' anymore as it was getting played on every single music channel (and we have about 20) and I am already getting tired of 'Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End). The latter looks to be the christmas number one tomorrow night, that will be two rock songs at number one in a row (Ozzy and Kelly).
Guest NewYorkFox Report post Posted December 20, 2003 God, that Osbournes song pisses me off. Not only is it excrutiatingly cheesy, it's incredibly crap too. Tony Iomi must wanna slap him something chronic.
DCMaximo 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2003 I have to say, the Darkness are best enjoyed in the live environment. I got the album, which I enjoyed, but when I saw them at Reading, not only did the quality of their set make me adore the album (album of the year, motherfuckers) but, coming after Staind bored me to tears with a shite acoustic set, they were like gods to me
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2003 well i bought the album a few days ago, and its very solid IMO. Plus I got tickets too see them January 12th in Toronto

Guest webmasterofwrestlegame Report post Posted December 27, 2003 I went to their homecoming gig in Great Yarmouth here in East Anglia. They were very good live - very interactive (about 500 people there) and overall it was a good show.

Fairs fair, hair metal does generally suck. If only because of the crap production, over reliance on image and poor songwriting in most bands.

Mystery Eskimo 0 Report post Posted December 28, 2003 Darkness should have been Xmas no 1 over here, even though it was an awful song. That damn Mad World is so dull. I became a Darkness fan when I saw them at Glastonbury, which was an amazing set. I can see how people could easily hate them, but I think they're a lot of fun. King Cucaracha 0 Report post Posted December 28, 2003 Darkness should have been Xmas no 1 over here, even though it was an awful song. That damn Mad World is so dull. I don't see the attraction of that Mad World song, other than it's from some movie or something. I mean...does it even have a chorus? Can that guy sing the 'louder' parts of the song without jerking his head back like he's got a tick? At least the Darkness song was Christmasy. Cheesy as hell, tounge in cheek...but a Christmas song nonetheless. Mad World is just depressing. Anyway, on topic...I love The Darkness. They're deliberatly over the top, and it sells. It makes them stand out from other rock bands, and right now they're the biggest band the UK has. Awesome live act. Fun. Decent guys. You can tell they enjoy doing what they do, so it's good to see them succeeding. People who don't like them are nearly always the kind of people who take their music too seriously, and don't 'get it'. They're trying to be entertaining. That Darkness single was easily their worst so far. And Mad World is a true triumph of quality over hype.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2003 My beef with The Darkness is not that it's hair metal, rather, that it's been embraced by legions of people who'd rather not admit that Poison had some good songs. Hair metal is not "cool" by indie standards, but too many friggin' indie kids think this band is, somehow, okay. I wouldn't mind if, ya know, the Darkness didn't suck. caboose 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2003 The thing about the Darkness for me is that the joke got old after I heard 'I Beleieve In A Thing Called Love' for the fifth time. And believe me, they are a joke, their next album won't sell anywhere near what 'Permission To Land' did.
justsoyouknow 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2003 Fuck this band. It's hair metal, ferchrissakes. Ten years ago, the fucking Bulletboys weren't hip for doing this kind of crap. Or Buckcherry a few years ago. Thou will not take the name of Buckcherry in vain. I bought the CD, but once I picked up my friends and it was playing, I was embarassed. The Darkness are decent, but the singing is AWFUL.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2003 I saw Buckcherry live. I enjoyed them, though I've never heard them on disc beyond the singles.
justsoyouknow 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2003 Do you have AIM, Inc? Because Josh Todd (the lead singer) is working on a solo project, and I got a few of the new songs off of it...the "new" Buckcherry is so much heavier than the "old" Buckcherry. Hit me up on PM if you're interested.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2003 Thanks, but my interest in the band or any off-shoots is virtually nil. I only went to the show I did because it was free. Plus I drank for free, which helped.
