2002. Not only was he putting on 3-4* matches all year long with the 'Smackdown Six', he was also being an absolute carry machine, dragging watchable matches out of shitheaps like Mark Henry. 2001 had better storylines for Angle, but his ringwork last year was on fire. I must be the only person ever who found the hairpiece thing amusing. Oh well.

O YES! I enjoyed those Matches. Angle/Beniot/Los Guerreros/Edge/Rey....They Wrestled too much IMO,Fued lasted too long too IMO But no doubt they put on Great Matches.

Well, the match arguement has been covered...as for character, which is half of Angle's appeal, 2000 was probably best because he got over with the goofy, comedic yet straight wrestler stuff. And the love triangle made him a bonafide star.

 

2001 with Austin was classic, and the first half of the year was ok enough. But I absoultely LOATH face Angle, especially the pro-USA version they used at the start of the Invasion. He just looks and sounds too desperate for fan appeal sometimes as face.

 

2002 let him become a serious tag wrestler, and his feud with Benoit was good...gave him chance to do comedy. Plus he got the good side of his face persona out a couple of times. But it was nothing special, and the Edge fued made him look TOO much of an idiot. There's a fine line between goofy and a total goof.

 

2003 he's been booked seriously...but the face turn again killed it for me. He can be good as a face...the midget stuff was mildly entertaining, but the rapping should be kept for Cena. And the less said about the Angle-Lesnar 'friendship' the better.

When the WWE beat the Alliance he was the mole who helped turn the tide of battle. In 2001 Angle was made into a top talent. There is no way around it. Hell he has main evented a fucking WM. He is a top guy. People who are bitching that Angle isn't getting enough of a push are just looking for something to complain about. He even made the fucking Undertaker tap out. Not a top guy in the company??? give me a break.

I think Kurt Angle's best year was 2001. He really stood out from the rest of the roster that year (as did Benoit and Austin). He still hasn't gotten everything down in the ring yet, but he has time left.

Yes, yes...we all know you're a big Angle mark and you hate it when he's made to look like anything but the toughest wrestler in the company, or made to job to anyone. But I think Angle's got really good comic delivery at times, and when he came out after having his head shaved, and claimed that it had all grown back, I couldn't help but chuckle. I know it's hardly sophisticated comedy, but haven't you ever watched something you knew was bad, but were entertained anyway? (e.g. WWE)

 

I'm probably in a minority, but half of what I LIKE about Angle is the fact that despite his in-ring ability and toughness, his character comes across as being totally goofy. It's a world away from the usual HHH-style "I'm a badass that's gonna kick everyone in" character that we've all seen a million times over. The fact that he goofs around a lot makes it more exciting when he gets all serious, and makes him seem more like a real character to me.

I agree there is a difference, but The Rock in between title runs does alot of stupid angles and goofy shit, and he is still considered a main eventer and is over. He has jobbed to Billy Gunn in a fued about ass, jobbed to Al Snow countless times, lost to the Hurricane, lost to Rhyno, jobbed to the fucking Big Bossman, and has brought out midjets in stupid comedy angles. So is he not treated nlike a main event wrestler. I guess five straight years of having one of the top three high profile matches on WM means nothing. The announcers still put him over as the people's champion just like they still put Angle over as the Olympic Gold Medalist and the best pure wrestler. Angle has jobbed to Edge, Brock, and Benoit that is it. He is consistently at the top of the card, and when he losses it is made into a big deal. Yes sometimes I think his character should be more serious, but that is part of what makes Kurt Angle who he is. It is not like he has ever been totally burried at anytime in his career in the last three years.

Angle's best year would be 2002, IMO. His best work in 2001 was down to the other guy (Stone Cold) and his work this year has pretty much blew. Outside of the Benoit match at RR and possibly the Taker match on SD!, what as Angle done this year? He has been involved in 4 dissapointing matches with Brock Lesnar, one of which was pure shat (Iron man) and exposed Angle big time.

I enjoyed his 2001 and 2002 work equally.

 

2001 :

 

His matches with Austin were excellent, as was his match with Shane McMahon at King of the Ring.

 

He had his good match with Triple H at the Royal Rumble.

 

He had is great match with The Rock at No Way Out.

 

At Wrestlemania, he and Chris Benoit tore the ring up with an excellent mat based match, and then they did it again at the next two PPVs. All of the matches were good, but the Backlash match dragged a bit.

 

Move onto Summerslam, Unforgiven, Vengeance and many TV matches with Steve Austin. All of the matches with those two were usually superb.

 

No Mercy had ANOTHER good match involving Kurt and Austin but this time included RVD.

 

2002 :

 

Had an okay match with Triple H, which was about as good as people could do at this point, because The Game was REALLY going downhill.

 

He then had an okay match with Kane, but again, that was excusable, and he managed to help the match achieve a big match feel as well.

 

We then come onto his matches with Edge at King of the Ring and Judgement Day, and then the Cage Match and normal match on Smackdown. These were all REALLY great matches and a testament to the work of Angle, who really did a great job guiding Edge ( NOT complete carry jobs, as Edge did hold up well ) to great matches.

 

We move onto Hulk Hogan. Hulk Hogan put Angle over and gave Angle a huge boost with his heat, as he made Hogan tap cleanly.

 

Kurt Angle then moved into the Smackdown six for the rest of the year, untill he defeated The Big Show to cap of the year.

 

 

So, I believe that 2001 was better workwise, but 2002 was better from a markout point of view ( I like Angle a lot ) so I would say it's pretty much even.

I see it like this: I have a younger cousin of age 11. He, and half his mates at school all watch Smackdown every week and talk about wrestling, play the games etc. all the time. I know of no-one of my age in the area with any interest in it whatsoever. The kids are watching it, no-one else is so I'd say it's being aimed at kids (young adults, whatever.)

Do you not think Angle has good delivery of comic lines? Personally, I think he has nice timing, and can get a couple of laughs even out of some relatively mediocre, silly material. I never claimed the wig thing was anything but, but on that occasion Kurt's big goofy grin and cracking delivery made me smile.
