Like, does the whole no-drugs no-alcohol thing cover prescription/over the counter drugs? Because if it does, then I'm nowhere friggin near Straight Edge.

I just thought they were people that didn't do that and since everyone has to belong to the group they came up with this title.

Well, my view of it is:

No recreational drug use, no tobacco, no alcohol, and no promiscuous sex.

If you need an operation, then obviously you're going to get drugged. But its not for pleasure, thus it doesn't violate the rules of sXe.

I just wish someone could explain why a banner I've seen in a couple of sigs around here has "NO BOOZE, NO DRUGS, NO FEAR" attached to it. What is there to be afraid of? Are there people physically coercing you to partake in these activities?

Why can't these Party Bullies mess with me? I could use a good hedonistic romp.

Because these people feel the need to pat themselves on the back and look superior to those that do.

You're a fake Fonzie. No way that The Fonz didn't drink.

And I don't care about CM Punk.

Yeah, I mean, where else was he going to get the courage to jump the shark?

I didn't expect you to care about CM Punk, Kotz, you'd be more of a Special K guy in the ROH universe.

Me? I'm Samoa Joe, big, bad, and throwing kicks to the dome like a motherfuck.

I was always under the impression that he was wasted 24/7.

Hi everyone. I guess the asshole has shown up to the party.

The general beliefs of straight edge are no illegal drugs (marijuana, cocaine, etc...though abuse of over the counter pills are considered drug usage. Abuse of those drugs, though), no alcohol (i'd imagine communion wine would probably be an exception), and no tobacco.

For me, I don't take any over the counter of prescribed pills (the only thing I do take is Pepto Bismol), no painkillers, and no caffeine.

Other sXe'ers also don't eat meat, though I love protein too much to drop that shit.

As for being losers, if refusing to alter my state of being with chemicals makes me a loser, then so be it. I must be weird for trying to remember what I did last night. How foolish of me.

And the superiority complex is just because some of those kids, like me, are just douchebags.

Yeah, but not everyone who drinks does so to get absolutely bombed out of their skull.

I should prefice my statement with the fact that I have good friends that are sXe, but ...

... my big beef with most straight edge kids is that they don't see shades of grey. It's all black-and-white, if you drink it's obvious that you drink too much and black out. Or if you smoke pot then it's obvious that you're also a crackhead that would kill someone for some crystal meth. Or if you have sex with your girlfriend it's obvious that you're equivalent to Sodom and Gomorrah and deserve to die.

It's like they won't acknowledge that you can casually drink, or have a cigarette, or occasionally smoke some pot, or have sex with your girl, and not take it too far. I wouldn't call them losers, but I do think that they need to see the shades of grey.

Just my two cents.

Who is this Special K fellow? I've seen some ROH stuff, but never him.

Well, its actually a group of kids.

They're ravers, complete with glowsticks, baggy pants, and a happy fun fun attitude, until they get mauled by bigger guys.

From allmusic.com

Born out of the early Washington, DC hardcore punk scene, Straight-Edge has a strange history. It can be traced back to songs written by Minor Threat vocalist Ian MacKaye. Those songs, "Straight-Edge," and "Out of Step," outlined MacKaye's personal feelings on the hedonism of the day, and the rules were simple: No drinking, no drugs, no smoking, no casual sex. (Over time this would eventually include both vegetarianism and Veganism.) MacKaye eventually backed off, stating that he had not meant to start a movement , but the ideas resonated loud and clear through the national hardcore punk underground, and other disaffected punks got involved and started scenes in New York, Los Angeles and Arizona (to name a few). Longevity was achieved with straight-edge's peak in 1988, with bands like Youth of Today, Seven Seconds and Gorilla Biscuits making the music more accessible by taking the basic hardcore riffs and adding melodic and metallic tones. While the musicality of straight-edge carries many of the simplistic angry structures of hardcore punk, the agenda of the lyrics has many facets, ranging from the original rules, to embracing social and political issues like pacifism, animal rights, civil rights, etc.

Lyrics to "In My Eyes" and "Straight-Edge" respectively, Minor Threat's only true straight-edge songs.

You tell me you like the taste

You just need an excuse

You tell me it calms your nerves

You just think it looks cool

You tell me you want to be different

You just change for the same

You tell me it's only natural

You just need the proof

Did you fucking get it?

IT'S IN MY EYES

AND IT DOESN'T LOOK THAT WAY TO ME

IN MY EYES

You tell me that nothing matters

You're just fucking scared

You tell me that I'm better

You just hate yourself

You tell me that you like her

You just wish you did

You tell me that I make no difference

At least I'm fuckin' trying

What the fuck have you done?

IT'S IN MY EYES

AND IT DOESN'T LOOK THAT WAY TO ME

IN MY EYES

-

I'm a person just like you

But I've got better things to do

Than sit around and fuck my head

Hang out with the living dead

Snort white shit up my nose

Pass out at the shows

I don't even think about speed

That's something I just don't need

I'VE GOT THE STRAIGHT EDGE

I'm a person just like you

But I've got better things to do

Than sit around and smoke dope

'Cause I know I can cope

Laugh at the thought of eating ludes

Laugh at the thought of sniffing glue

Always gonna keep in touch

Never want to use a crutch

I'VE GOT THE STRAIGHT EDGE

Basically Straight-Edge people are assholes (walk up to you and knock a beer out of your hand at a party) or nice (tolerate your beliefs and expect the same in return), with no in-betweens.

What's with these teenagers that have to be told what to think by music groups?

Posted

Meh, I'm straight edge (apart from the odd sip of booze), but not to be part of any movement.

I like having control over myself, don't need to spend a shit load to have a good night out and like being healthy. Plus, members of my family have died from liver failure and lung cancer, so I'm not gonna follow in their footsteps.

As for the superiority thing, when you're completely set apart from the peer pressure that goes with most recreational drugs, and the stupidity that often goes with taking them, it's hard not to look down on them. If some guy was stabbing himself repeatedly in the arm, it's difficult not to feel superior, and the same is true with booze, fags and other drugs.

Personally, I've never felt like I was missing out on anything by anything by being straight edge. Anybody who feels like they need to do this stuff is a moron in my mind...

I have a friend who used to be a pot head and who would get quite wasted. After a really bad experience at a party, he decided to go straight edge, and has been for a long time now. He does, however, have sex. He just doesn't touch alcohol or drugs or cigarettes.

Meh, Minor Threat were white supremacists anyway so take what they say with a grain of salt.

Huh?!? Where'd you hear that Minor Threat were racists? They must have just been faking their friendships with Bad Brains and Toni Young, not to mention the various Jews that were part of the DC HC scene.

I'll give you that Minor Threat is made up of upper-middle class suburban kids wishing that they were more street, but not racists.

Kinda makes you think when they release a song called "Guilty of Being White".

Think what? That they're fed up with the fact that they are supposed to feel bad because of what some white people did years ago that probably aren't even related to them? I guess that makes me a white supremacist if I think people need to stop talking about their fucking skin color as if it's a handicap. I know racism exists, and it's an ugly thing, but the only way to kill something like that - and not give people reasons for believing in it - is to not care.

Apathy: My defense.

I've known people that have died from drugs, cigarette smoking, alcohol, and know people with STDs. That doesn't stop me from having the occasional toke with my friends, finishing a pack of Reds in a week, drink now and then, and fuck my woman.

If you're going to go sXe, go ahead. But nobody's forcing you to take drugs or not, so stop acting like getting high on weed and shooting up black tar heroin are the same thing. I know enough sXe kids that think that, and I blow my cig smoke in their face.
