The OAO NHL 2003-2004 Season Thread

Meanwhile, on ESPN, the Devils have a full-contact practice against the Rangers, who looked like they didn't even want to be there.

Wee.

I was listening on the radio and gave up when it was 5-2, but I just turned it back on to see how it ended and the Leafs tied it up. Sounded like a great game, I guess I'll catch the highlights.

I just want to know who the assholes were who voted for the shitty ass Rangers/Devils game. That game means shit as far as I am concerned and I would much rather have seen the Leafs and Habs go to battle. They need to put a Canadian in charge of ESPN NHL programming

I think the Leafs/Flyers game on Thursday is on ESPN. Of course, that's a game I could probably do without watching, given the results of their last few encounters.

The Flames defeat Detroit, these guys are for real

I predicted a Calgary upset of Detroit in the second round this year to my friend who was like "no way man, Wings sweep all four" and this certainly doesn't make him look right.

Committee votes to ban Leaf jerseys at Corel Centre

OTTAWA - Maple Leaf fans beware. Ottawa councillors want to ban your hockey sweaters from the Corel Centre.

Coun. Rick Chiarelli wants the Senators' home rink to be a Senators-paraphernalia-only zone.

Because of the budget-cutting exercies, there's been nothing but negative news coming out of city council committee meetings these days.

So, was Tuesday's decision a diverson from it all? Or was it real?

Every councilor on the committee voted in favor of it.

Coun. Chiarelli admits this resolution is meant to lighten the mood of Ottawa citizens. But he says he means every word of this resolution.

"The senators have been an integral part of the economy in Ottawa, and our civic branding and it's offensive to [have] a bunch of people walking around with Toronto Maple Leaf jerseys when civic pride is on the line."

Chiarelli believes the resolution will pass when the full city council votes on it later this month.

"I've been to the Leafs-Sens games, and up to 20 per cent of the people are cheering for the Leafs, wearing Leafs' paraphernalia. That can't be good for progress. It can't be good for the city's image or branding."

If city council approves it, city officials say that doesn't mean bylaw officers will kick people out of the Corel Centre at the next game. But food-bank officials will be close at hand to collect donations from offending fans.

Mayor Bob Chiarelli says, "Certainly it's tongue in cheek. It's meant to create some excitement around the city. We want the Maple Leaf fans in the Corel Centre to realize that the city is behind the Senators."

City council will vote on the issue on March 24. The next game between the Senators and Leafs is April 3.

I can see this backfiring, big time.

Leafs lose 2-1 against Boston.

The B's should have won by much more, too. They hit something like 3 posts, and plus there was the amazing save that Owen Nolan made on a Gonchar rebound. If a couple of those go in, we're looking at a 4-1 game.

Did anyone watch the Sportscenter top 10 today? It was like a bizarro-edition, with SEVEN of the 10 highlights being hockey plays. You normally would need to watch a week's worth of top 10's to see 7 hockey highlights.

Ban the dark blue Toronto sweaters...those just plain suck.

Oh and by the way, these are the Eastern Conference first round matches if the playoffs started today. Hell yeah.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. New York Islanders

Philadelphia Flyers vs. New Jersey Devils

Boston Bruins vs. Montreal Canadiens

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Ottawa Senators

I like that setup. All we need is a late run from Edmonton in the west to bump the Preds out and get ourselves an awesome Stanley Cup tournament.

Well, if things stay this way, they will be exactly like I wanted them a few weeks ago (hell, who would have thought it would be Montreal in the six spot at the time and not Jersey though):

Here are my ideal Eastern playoff standings and the matchups that would follow:

1. Tampa Bay

2. Boston

3. Philadelphia

4. Toronto

5. Ottawa

6. New Jersey

7. Montreal

8. Florida

The best part is that there as it is right now these standings are not all that far off.

That would lead to

Tampa Bay v. Florida

Boston v. Montreal

Philadelphia v. New Jersey

Toronto v. Ottawa

Best first round ever.

Except for the Lightning-Isles. I would still love for Florida to get hot and sneak in some how (they actually pulled to within seven points with that win tonight with both teams having 9 games left). Go Panthers!

I still say Edmonton vs Calgary for the Western Conference Finals, in which the winner then goes onto winning the Stanley Cup.

I'd prefer the Oilers, but as long as one of the two Albertan teams wins it, I'm a happy Albertan.

Am I the only one that thinks that the Lightning - regardless of how unbelievably hot they're playing right now - have no shot of winning the Cup? I don't know what it is, but other than the Islanders, I really think that every other team in the East has a better chance of winning it all than Tampa does.

I look at their goaltending too, baron.

Khabibulin has been off, and John Grahame wouldn't exactly reassure me.

They can score, and they have an underrated blueline, but without that absolute wall, they can't get far.

I just don't see St Louis making it through the much more physical postseason without getting banged up. Lecavalier and Richards are good, but not enough to carry the team if St Louis gets banged up or his production slows down. And, until I'm proven wrong, I'm not going to view either Khabibulin or Grahame as Cup-caliber goalies.

Tampa: beats NYI but loses in round two to whomever they face.

I view any team's goalie as Cup-caliber goalies if they help their team make the playoffs.

We've found out the hard way of doubting goalies that they could come back to bite us with spectacular performances and carrying their teams on their backs.

Examples:

Montreal and Theodore

Anaheim and Giguire.

And I have a sneaky feeling that another goaltender that'll do this is Flames netminder, Kippy (I can't spell his last name, sue me). Also with McClennan as well, this team has a lot of goalies that are out to prove themselves.

I disagree. If a goalie leads his team to the postseason but loses in the first round, then I'd call them playoff-caliber and not Cup-caliber (e.g. Byron Dafoe or Dan Cloutier) If a goalie leads his team to the postseason and does something memorable there (Theodore taking a scrappy 8 seed and leading them to a huge upset over the topseeded Bruins, or Giguere just about carrying the Ducks to Game 7 of the Cup.) then I'd call them Cup-caliber. If a goalie actually wins the Cup, then they've cemented their reputation as a Cup-caliber netminder.

What have Khabibulin or Grahame done? Grahame played well in his one game last year, but after watching him flounder in the Boston net for so many years, I'd be unlikely to bet the farm on him winning game 7 of the Cup. Khabibulin has legitimate playoff numbers, but is still under .500 with a GAA of about 2.65. Not the types of numbers that would strike fear in an opponent.

I do think that at least one goaltender will rise up this postseason and take the step from playoff-caliber to Cup-caliber. It might be Kiprussof, or Legace, or Raycroft. Someone that hasn't really had much of a chance until this year.

McClennan got traded to the Rangers, so no playoffs to prove himself in until he gets traded again.

Well, if the Rangers are dumping salary, they're not going to want to take on Turek's contract when McClennan's is so much smaller.

I know, but still.

A lot of goalies as of late are coming into their own. It is getting to the point where there are too many good goalies and not enough teams.

I'm going to wager that Raycroft backstops the B&G to the Conference Finals and cements himself as a goaltender of the future.

Also, Aebischer writes himself in as the undisputed #1 in Denver.
