The Heisman trophy........

Recommended Posts

So they're announcing the Top 5 Canidates tonight. Who does everyone expect will actually win the Heisman on Saturday?

From what I understand it is expected that Jason White will get ALL 10 first place votes. Who do you believe deserves it?

Personally I would say White. His numbers as a quarterback are tremendous and he's taken basically the same team as last year that had to work under Nate Hybl and turn it into the team that it is today.

Philip Rivers really ought to get into the top 5, but I doubt he will. He's the only reason NC State has those 7 wins this year.

You're probably right - Larry Fitzgerald was close all year, but Pitt's not even in the top 25 anymore. I'll be stunned if he gets it. White is the easy choice.

Only four finalists were announced with no surprises: Jason White, Larry Fitzgerald, Eli Manning, and Chris Perry. Most of the ballots were sent in before last Saturday so White is pretty much a lock.

Ummm there are A LOT more than 10 people vote who vote on the Heisman.

Fitzgerald is the best player in football, but he might not get it. White has mastered the art of the 5 yard out which Clayton turns into a 70 yard score padding White's stats.

Fitzgerald

Perry

White

Keep telling yourself all of this...and OU might just suck next year.

The Heisman Trophy is supposed to go to the best player in college football. With that being said, Larry Fitzgerald should win the award. He probably won't for two reasons:

1.He's a sophomore

2.Pitt slumped a bit towards the end of the season

Still, he's the best player in America, while White isn't the best player on his team.

How is White not the best player in the country? The AP the thing which you swear by to determine the #1 team in the country has declared him the College Player of the Year.

Plus he's got one of the most impressive records of any quarterback that's ever won the Heisman.

Even though I'm a huge college football fan I so don't care about the Heisman. After the year Gino Toretta beat out Garrison Hearst, think it was '92 or '93, I realized how pointless and overhyped the award really was. Also the Heisman Trophy show that ESPN does has to be one of the most boringest hour in television. Just announce the damn winner and get it over with it.

Some dude from USA Today had a good idea on the Tony Kornheiser show this morning: Give the award after the bowls are played. What if whoever wins the Heisman bombs in their bowl game and causes their team to suffer humiliating defeat?

No, I can't <coughCrouchcough> say that <coughGeorgecough> I've ever <coughWeinkecough> seen that in my <coughTorretacough> life

Jason White SUCKED in OU's biggest game of the year. Notwithstanding his superb numbers, real Heisman players don't choke like that. My rankings:

1. Chris Perry

2. Larry Fitzgerald

3. Darren Sproles

4. Jason White

5. Eli Manning

The fan in me wants Fitzgerald. The sportswriter in me wants Perry.

What I don't understand is why Perry is even UP here when he wasn't even the best running back in the nation.

Chris Perry is an outstanding running back but the Heisman Trophy obviously doesn't take into account the best players in college football, just the players with the best PR staff.

Let's look at some of the numbers across the nation for these guys

-Jason White: #1 in Passing rating (167.99), #5 in yards passing (3744), and #2 in touchdowns (48 with 8 INTS) so he has the creds to be here. Good call.

-Larry Fitzgerald: #1 in receiving yards (1595), #1 in the nation in scoring (132), #7 in receptions (87), #1 in touchdowns for receivers (22). Definately deserves to be there.

-Chris Perry: #4 in rushing yards (1589), #81 in yards per carry (5.0), and #7 in touchdowns (17). So why exactly is Perry even here? Oh, he's a senior....nevermind. I like Perry but he wasn't even the best RB in the country. Talented but not the best.

-Eli Manning: #22 in QB rating (147.5, wasn't even the highest rated Eli), #12 in touchdowns (27 with 9 INTS), and #12 in yards (3341). Never has a last name earned so much respect for such average numbers for a quarterback.

Advantage: Jason White over Fitzgerald

Ok, so let's take into account the records as well, to be fair

Jason White: 12-1

Larry Fitzgerald: 8-4

Chris Perry: 10-2

Eli Manning: 9-3

Advantage: Jason White

It looks like White has got it wrapped up but I have some guys who got dissed and dissed badly

-Darren Sproles RB K-State: #1 in rushing yards (1948), #9 in Yards per carry (6.6), and #11 in touchdowns (15) on just 293 carries. Sproles, a JR, SHOULD be back next year and SHOULD be the favorite to win it since he can't this year

-Phillip Rivers QB NC-ST: #2 in ratings (166.7), #4 in yards (4016), #8 in touchdowns (29 with 7 INTS). What killed Rivers? His teams record of 7-5 but without Rivers they don't win one game. Not only that but Rivers hit 71% of his passes, second in the nation. Should be there instead of Eli Manning.

-Ben Roethlisberger QB Miami (OH): #7 in rating (163.5), #2 in yards (4110), #6 in touchdowns (33 with 10 INTS). Lead Miami (OH) to a 12-1 record in his JUNIOR season, while completing 69.5% of his passes and winning the MAC title. If returns, should be a leading Heisman candiate with Sproles next season.

My final five would have been:

Jason White

Larry Fitzgerald

Ben Roethlisberger

Darren Sproles

Phillip Rivers

However, of the NCAA final four I think Jason White is the obvious choice with Fitzgerald second.

Yeah, they do openly say that you have to mount an actual campaign if you want to win the Heisman. It's supposed to be about skill not popularity goddammit.

You forgot <coughDetmercough >. I still grin when I think about that Holiday Bowl against Texas A&M when he got knocked around and then outplayed by Bucky Richardson.

As for this year I seriously believe Fitzgerald should win it. He was one of the only offensive weapons for a medicore/good Pitt team and faced at least double coverage all year and STILL managed to do what he did.

Jason White has all the skill in the world. It's not just that he has a good team. It's that he IS THAT GOOD. Look at his numbers and watch him play. He's the best quarterback in college football.

And that's a reason I like the BCS. It isn't biased to "what have you done for me lately?" like the human polls are. I am thankful it looks at the season as a whole and takes into account everything that's being done.

I mean you could lose to the very last ranked team in a fucking blowout

and still be ranked higher than someone that lost to the #2 ranked team in a close game with the human polls....just because the losses are at different times.

Look at the big picture guys. Pay attention to what White and The Sooners have done all season. Not recently. Take everything into account. Don't be narrow minded.

And, now that I remember, I also forgot <coughHowardcough> when Michigan got owned by Washington. Maybe it's the Michigan fan in me repressing this memory, although those Huskies were a hell of a team.

Also there was Andre Ware, who didn't even go to a bowl game at all. As I look through the records here, there was a four season stretch where UHouston had a great record but didn't go to a bowl. Were they on probation?

Hey, ELI~! won the Maxwell player of the year award. Hopefully they won't screw him out of the Heisman like they did his big brother. I mean come on. CHARLES WOODSON?!?!

However, if Fitzgerald wins it then I will be fine. He really is the best player in the nation. BY FAR. I mean not even close.

Then why does Jason White have a better record than him? Jason White is by far the best quarterback in the country and deserves it...especially after he went down with the injury and came back to prove to everyone why he was the best.

Oh btw...Jason White was also named the AP Player of the Year.....what's this.......two players of the year?

Stop thinking about record. That's the whole reason the Heisman is a ridiculous award. It's not about the best player in the country, as they advertise - it's about the best player in the country on one of the best teams. Jason White definitely deserves to be up there as he IS one of the best QB's in the nation and definitely the best QB on a great team, but I'd rather have Philip Rivers on my squad any day.

Jason White'll be a good choice when he wins, but unfortunately it'll continue the precedent of a team having to be top 10 for their man to have a chance.

The Heisman trophy has been a joke for at least ten years (someone mentioned Toretta over Hearst already), but any credibility it might have had was completely destroyed when Eric Crouch won it two years ago by throwing more interceptions than touchdown passes for an overrated Nebraska team.

The nominees this year are good enough for it to NOT be a joke.

I swear....everything these days is a joke. Next thing you know winning the super bowl will be a joke.
